Barrett's Banter

WE will be looking to carry on recent momentum when we take on Hartlepool
tomorrow.

I think our upturn in form started in the FA Cup against Barnsley - when we
were unlucky to lose - and we've followed that up with more good displays.

We beat Leeds and but for the referee spoiling it for us we would have done
the same at Leyton Orient last weekend.

It was a positive performance which deserved more than a point but the
journey home was also quite eventful.

It's been well documented that our the windows on our team coach were
smashed by a few mindless idiots but what hasn't been reported is just how
scared poor old Simon Francis was!

He was by the first window which got smashed, along with Steve Collis, and
when we changed coaches back in Brentwood I think Franno had to change his
underpants!

You wouldn't want him alongside you in the trenches that's for sure but
hopefully we can all be celebrating again on Saturday. We were poor up at
Hartlepool not so long ago and we let in some bad goals. We want it to be a
different story this weekend as we try to get back up the table.

Elsewhere I - like everyone else - watched the England friendly with
Switzerland during the week.

It was obviously the start of a new era with Fabio Capello in charge and
during the first half things seemed to be the same as always.

The players looked a little nervous which was understandable but got better
after the break and got the result which is always the most important thing.

The new manager seems like someone who isn't going to pamper to the players
and is going to be strict with them.

That's what I think it needs and hopefully we can get better with him in
charge now.

SOUTHEND United have set themselves a target of 70 points to reach the
League One play-offs, according to winger Mark Gower.

The winger will again line up for the Shrimpers when they host Hartlepool
United at Roots Hall tomorrow.

And Gower admits Blues cannot afford many more slip-ups at home if they are
to finish in the top six.

"We've had a chat among ourselves in training this week and we think we're
going to need 70 points to get to where we want to be," said the 29-year-old
who has scored seven times already for the Seasiders this season.

"That means we have to get on a right run and realistically we have to win
most if not all of the nine games we have left at home.

"On top of that we need to get a few away from home. It's a tough ask but we
believe it's within our reach."

Blues are currently ninth in the table on 41 points, five below sixth-placed
Tranmere Rovers.

Gower is sure the gap can be narrowed and is confident of victory this
weekend.

"It was a very open game when we played them before a few weeks ago," said
the winger reflecting on the 4-3 defeat at Victoria Park.

"But we've shown we can score goals against them and if we can be a bit more
solid at the back then we can definitely beat them.

"They are an average side really but have a couple of good strikers who have
got goals for them and we shall have to be wary of them again.

"They won their last match 4-0 against Luton which will have boosted their
confidence but we have enough about us to beat them."

Gower has also been buoyed by the Shrimpers' recent displays which has seen
them beat Leeds United 1-0 and draw 2-2 at Leyton Orient.

"We've played well in both of those games and the new signings we've made
have settled in quite quickly," said the winger.

"Conceding in injury time like we did at Orient is always painful and we
want to make up for it by winning tomorrow and hopefully getting right back
into the race for the play-offs.

"Two of the team just above us - Tranmere and Orient - are playing each
other so at least one is going to drop points and that means we have a great
chance of closing the gap."

I wasn't the most popular kid at school. I didn't have the latest trainers
or wear the fashions of the day unless I wanted to. I just didn't follow the
pack. None more so than with the football team I followed then and now. I
lived in deepest, darkest West Ham country and endured many a day having the
mickey taken or having to have a punch-up to defend the honour of my beloved
Shrimpers.

It was a cold December and snow had been threatening for days but no matter,
the FA Cup 3rd round draw was about to start and as was tradition Grandstand
was on and I was eagerly awaiting Southend to come out of the hat. Out we
came with home advantage, HUZZAH!! I thought, I'll go to this one.

"Will play.......Liverpool."

Ever had one of those time stops still moments, you are in a spinning vortex
with one word being repeated over and over again.......

Liverpool, Liverpool, Liverpool, Liverpool.

Little Southend United of the 3rd Division, having a poor to middling season
and average crowds of 5-6,000 had just copped the most successful team in
Europe at home in the FA Cup. Well there's a turn-up for the books.

Monday morning at school was a little different than usual. Instead of the
pisstaking about getting beat by Crewe or Hartlepool, I had just become the
most popular football fan in living history. You see quite apart from the
fact that I supported Southend rather than West Ham, Spurs or Man U, I was
also one of those rare breeds because I actually went. I watched my team in
the flesh not on the telly. My scarf was for waving not to keep my neck
warm. I knew how bad a football hotdog really tasted. The questions came
thick and fast. Are you going? Well duh. Can you get tickets? Does a fat dog
fart! What day is it, How you getting there, what colours do Southend play
in and my particular favourite, Where's Roots Hall? I didn't have a fight
that day, which was nice.

Southend decided to do the voucher thing which was set for the next home
game. I did my usual and got to the ground about 20 minutes before kick-off.
Big mistake. The place was heaving with spotty little brats from my home
town charging around like maniacs getting stroppy with the locals, queue
jumping and generally being a pain in the rear.

The club had said one voucher per supporter which was a sneaky way of
getting more through the gates for this game but it was causing murders.
People desperate for more vouchers were getting in then trying to get out
again so they could pay to get back in and get more vouchers. One lad from
my school did this 5 times and nearly got himself battered when he went
through the turnstiles then turned round and climbed back over them to get
back out. As I suspected the majority of the new faces weren't in the
slightest bit interested in the game and some were just on the cadge for
vouchers so they could get extra tickets. I was asked 3 times if I wanted to
sell mine. Yeah right.

The next thing to do was get the prized ticket from the ticket office which
decided a Wednesday would be a good idea. Every school and employer in the
district recorded the lowest attendances ever known as Roots Hall car park
was put under siege. To be fair it was reasonable civilised but the snide
remarks about how Southend were in for a hiding and how wonderful Liverpool
were did stick in the gullet. A mental note was made to lump a couple of
them if we lost. I finally got to the window handed over my voucher and hard
begged for cash and was passed back a piece of pure gold. I held in my hand
peace in our time except this time I had a ticket to see the mighty
Shrimpers turn out against a bunch of dodgy scousers instead of having to go
and pick a fight with Germany. Much more fun Neville.

Would the day ever come? It was like waiting for death and the clock was
going backwards. Things had returned to something like normal at school and
a few Southend scarf's seemed to be putting in an appearance. Even a couple
of teachers started showing an interest and one cheeky sod even asked about
getting a ticket. Would you mind Harry? Er, yes I would after the last
comment you made about my history report.

Christmas arrived and thankfully passed by sharpish and January was fast
approaching, the big day was nearly here. And then it started snowing. No,
that isn't strictly true, it didn't just snow, it laid waste to Essex. Towns
were cut off, roads closed, schools closed and worst of all, football
postponed. If Michael Fish had lived next door he would be walking with a
limp until this day.

The club did their best and Sid and his team pulled everything out of their
arsenal but they were mere geniuses not magicians. The Saturday arrived but
the game was called off due to adverse weather conditions and 4 foot of snow
on the terracing. Worst day ever. But wait - the club, ever the optimists,
said the game would now be played on the Tuesday which meant an early one
from school for me and we always played better under floodlights. Liverpool
didn't stand a chance.

The big day arrived. I looked out the window and it was snowing, so there
isn't a God I thought. I trudged to school with thoughts of burning down
churches (I settled for chucking a snowball at one instead) but it did seem
to be brightening up and it had only been a dusting during the night. The
game would still be on. I learnt precisely nothing that day.

School was swiftly departed at 3.30 and I covered the mile and one half home
in roughly 12 seconds. Straight in, change, a quick raid on mother's purse
and I was gone on a southerly heading to my mate's house and bound for the
train. We headed off for the bus and dived into the train station. There was
still a lot of snow on the ground which had kept loads of people at home so
the station was almost deserted. Our train arrived and we were on our way.
My mate Terry was one of those types who always wore shoes which in this
weather was suicide but made for an excellent spectacle. We arrived at
Southend Central and Terry decided to go for a running skid along the
platform. As the train pulled away he commenced his run up and slid
gracefully for about 30 feet, gliding along then veering to the right and
landing in a heap on the tracks. I nearly wet myself.

We trekked up through the town and onto Vic Avenue edging ever closer to
that Mecca of football we know as Roots Hall, God's country. The area was
solid and I was wondering if we had left enough time to get in. We arrived
at the car park and what a sight met us. Every turnstile had a huge queue
and ours seemed the longest. No time to lose, I wasn't missing the build up
for nobody so we dived onto the end. Within seconds there were 20 people
behind us. The queue flew along nicely and in no time we were entering the
ground. Words alone cannot describe the feeling of pride I felt seeing our
ground bursting at the seams with thousands of people with expectant looks
on their faces. The buzz was fantastic.

Being expert in the art of pushing through a football crowd, I lead the way
to middle right behind the goal. There I was confronted with several of my
school year not one a Southend fan yet all sporting a blue scarf. Sid
Bloomfield had performed miracles and the pitch looked pretty good. While
waiting for the teams to appear a snowball fight of some 7,000-a-side was
going on which was fun. Best of all was some drunken scouser had got up the
floodlight and was swaying dangerously while singing 'Liverpool' non stop.
With a new target to aim at the entire South bank opened fire at our new
friend. Snowballs, ice, hot chocolate, hotdogs and a couple of small
children got launched at him and I don't think a thing hit him.

Then the teams came out. The roar was deafening, red flares were going off
in the north bank, snowballs were being slung in the south and Liverpool
looked nervous. Ray Clemence came down our end and gave a small smile then
turned his back. Next to me was a guy called Andy Ward. Out of his jacket he
pulled a toilet roll and as was the thing of the day pulled back his arm and
let fly. Majestically it flew through the air, hit the crossbar and bounced
off Ray's head. Respect to the man, he picked it up gave us all a wave and a
big smile then lobbed into the back of the net. Sadly, it was the only thing
that did end up in the net for the rest of the night.

The rest is, as they say, history. We gave the cream of Europe one hell of a
game and came oh so close via a Mickey Stead screamer which had Clemence
wringing his finger tips in pain. We came, we saw and we very nearly did it.
And it shut up the knockers for weeks after.

It's just two and a half weeks since Pools met Southend. A nervy 4-3 victory
at Victoria Park in January saw Pools push away from the relegation zone but
this game will be a tougher challenge.

Danny Wilson admits that his side weren't at their defensive best that night
''Since then I hope we've been able to tighten up at the back'' he told
Pools World.

''I know the win over Luton was just one game but it was a big step towards
where we want to be and I'm sure Southend are thinking the same.''

''We've both conceded quite a few goals this season and it's cost us points
so it's an area that both clubs will be looking to address.''

He says that clean sheets are an important factor ''If we can keep clean
sheets then we'll win games because we have enough firepower going
forward.''

  <http://www.hartlepool.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=98840> Click here
to win! ''I'll be surprised if it's 4-3 again this weekend but if it is and
it's in our favour then I'd settle for that now!''

Southend boss Steve Tilson still can't fathom how his side left the Vic with
nothing in the recent match ''We should have had something at Hartlepool, to
score three goals and not get anything is normally unheard of, we want to
get one back on them.'' he told the Southend OS.

''At the moment we are on a good run, we would have taken four points out of
our last two games but we would of have had all six on another day.''

''I am still confident that we can get back on track against Hartlepool on
Saturday.''

Southend Team News:

Charlie Mulgrew and Alex Revell could both make home debuts after starting
in the away game with Leyton Orient last week.

There are doubts over Lee Barnard who will undergo a late fitness test.

Player to watch: Leon Clarke

Leon Clarke is Southend's top scorer with 8 goals this season but Southend
can score goals from positions all over the pitch.

Hartlepool Team News:

Pools are without James Brown who is out for 6 weeks with a knee injury and
Ben Clark who is still struggling with a thigh injury.

Andy Monkhouse could be involved after returning from his injuries in last
weeks game against Luton.

Player to watch: Sam Collins

Collins was instrumental in our win against Luton last weekend and i hope he
can continue that form into this match.

Match Facts & Stats

Not including the recent match, Pools have won just once in their last 5
games against Southend. The last meeting at Roots Hall was in 2006 when
Southend were convincing 3-0 winners.

Match Prediction:

It's going to be a tough one, i know we had a great win last week but we
need to get some kind of consistency if we're to move up the league.

I still think we can snatch a draw in another high scoring encounter. Porter
and Barker to score.

Southend 2-2 Hartlepool

Struggling Bournemouth have gone into administration and will be docked 10
points, reports BBC Radio Solent.

Bournemouth's debts are believed to total around £4m and the points
deduction will send them to the foot of the League One table.

A press conference has been called for Friday where chairman Jeff Mostyn is
expected to detail the club's plight.

Business recovery specialists Begbies Traynor have been appointed as the
club's administrators.

THERE never seems to have been a dull moment during Kevin Maher's decade
with Southend United.

The midfielder, who stands third in the club's all time appearance list,
endured a tough time at the start of his spell with the Shrimpers and at one
point seemed destined to leave Roots Hall.

But he battled superbly to become captain of a side which secured two
successive promotions to earn a place in the Championship and the club's
history books.

"The 10 years have gone quite fast," Maher told the Echo. "At times it seems
to have gone quite slowly when we've been struggling a bit, but overall I've
had a great time and enjoyed some fantastic moments with the football club."

It was not always that way for Maher though. The now 31-year-old was signed
by Alvin Martin from Tottenham Hotspur in late January 1998 and was unable
to stop the Seasiders - who were then playing in what is now League One -
suffering relegation, despite some impressive individual performances in
unfamiliar surroundings.

"Coming in from Tottenham it was a bit of a culture shock but I always
enjoyed playing for Alvin," recalled Maher.

"He took a chance of me and I was grateful for that. We did well when I
first came in and there were some really good games. I remember playing
Watford and Fulham and beating Bournemouth 5-3 when it was 0-0 at half-time.

"They stick out but we ended up going down and it was a real disappointment.

"I was enjoying being involved in first team footballing having been stuck
in the reserves at Spurs but Alvin went the following year and it was a
shame that it never worked out for him here."

Southend's struggles continued in the basement division and that led to
former York City manager Alan Little taking over in April 1999. He stopped
the Shrimpers suffering another relegation but tough times still lay ahead
for Maher.

The midfielder found himself out of favour with both the club's manager and
fans and at one stage seemed destined to depart Roots Hall.

"It was a really hard time for me," said Maher. "I got put on the transfer
list and I got a lot of stick around that time. I seemed to bare the brunt
of a lot of people's frustrations and I wasn't used to it because at
Tottenham you're probably a little bit overprotected.

"In the end I didn't really want my friends or family coming to the games
and it was hard to take but I just kept my head down and worked hard.

"Rob Newman was there at the time and he was also brilliant to go and talk
to. He helped me a lot and in the end I managed to turn things around. Fair
play to Alan he put me back in eventually and I didn't really look back
after that."

But Little lasted just a year in the Shrimpers hot-seat before being
replaced by David Webb in October 2000.

He brought in a whole host of new signings but also brought out the best in
Maher who completed a remarkable recovery by being voted player of the
season for the 2000/01 campaign by the same supporters who used to boo him.

"Overall I've had a great time and enjoyed some fantastic moments with the
football club,"
Kevin Maher

"That was great and I really enjoyed playing for Webby," said Maher. "He was
very straight forward but you knew what to expect from him. I think I played
some of the best football of my career with him in charge and you knew what
was expected of you.

"The Canvey game stands out from around that time because they were flying
in non-league and had a really good team. Roots Hall was packed and it was
the first time I realised just how good the atmosphere could be inside the
ground.

"It was the FA Cup match as well which made it extra special, plus we won
2-1 so it was a great day and certainly one I'll always remember."

But more joy was to follow for Maher when he was named captain in 2002 by
Newman who was by now the manager after Webb's departure.

"It was a real honour," he said.

"I really wanted Rob to do well after everything he did for me but
unfortunately it wasn't to be which was a real shame."

And it was the same story his replacement Steve Wignall, who arrived in
April 2003.

"Things didn't work out for him either but it certainly wasn't for the lack
of trying," said Maher.

"Sometimes things just don't go your way and that's what happened with
Steve. He made some good signings though and some of them are still at the
club today."

So is Maher who led the side through a remarkable spell under manager Steve
Tilson which saw the Shrimpers rise up from the bottom of League Two in the
Championship.

"Tilly obviously has an affiliation with the club and when he and Brushy
came in we just took off straight away," said Maher.

"It was unbelievable and a real rollercoaster ride for everyone.

"We had two promotions and two LDV Vans Trophy finals and to get up into the
Championship in such a short space of time was fantastic"

Blues lasted just one season at that level but Maher was again voted player
of the season. And he remains proud of the achievement.

"Winning League One to go up into the Championship with the small squad we
had was just unbelievable," said Maher.

"The togetherness we had was the key and that's what made us such a special
side. It was brilliant and if I had to pick my favourite moment from my
whole 10 years then it would be walking out at Roots Hall to pick up the
trophy after beating Bristol City."

Maher's loyalty will be deservedly be rewarded with a testimonial and he
hopes it can be the first ever match at the club's proposed new stadium at
Fossetts Farm.

"It's great the club have given me this and it's something I'm certainly
looking forward to," he said.

"A new stadium would really take the club forward and is massive for our
future so to get the first game there would be something I would be very
proud of.

"Hopefully that can happen and it can be another high point from my time
with Southend which I've thoroughly enjoyed."

SOUTHEND United striker Lee Barnard will not be facing a long lay off with
his hamstring problem.

The forward, who has impressed since signing for the Shrimpers from
Tottenham Hotspur, was forced to limp off at Leyton Orient on Saturday.

But scans on his injury have come back clear, much to the delight of Blues'
assistant manager Paul Brush.

"The good news is Lee hasn't torn the hamstring," he confirmed. "Now we need
to look at what's causing the problem though and then go from there.

"He hadn't trained for a little while before joining us because he had a
knee injury and it this may have just been a reaction to getting back into
the swing of things.

"But we need to look into it because you can't take any risks with a
hamstring injury.

"If he pulls it he will be out for around a month and that's the last thing
we want, so we have to be careful and because of that we're not sure if he
will play against Hartlepool on Saturday."

Meanwhile Brush also confirmed the club are making plans to bring more faces
to the club on loan when the window opens again on Thursday.

"We have to be on the ball with these things because you never know what's
going to happen," he said.

"Teams may be more likely to let people out at this stage but we have until
the end of March to see what happens."

l BLUES' home clash with Brighton and Hove Albion has been rearranged for
Tuesday April 8, kick off 7.45pm.

"All my efforts are geared towards securing the future of AFC Bournemouth,"
Cherries chairman Jeff Mostyn said in a club statement.

"We are extremely disappointed at the stance taken by the Revenue in issuing

Orient 2 Southend 2

Daylight flippin' robbery. Ned Kelly, Dick Turpin and now Danny
McDermid. The fact that I have named and shamed a referee in a report
for the first time reveals just what a toad bubble this creature was.
Now I'm biased, there's absolutely no doubt about it, but I'm honest
about it and wear a shirt that broadcasts loudly and clearly to the
world just what team I support. But this sad excuse for an official hid
away inside its wasp suit throughout the game rather than 'come out' and
reveal the red shirt that it wore underneath, right up against its
scales.

From where the Thunderbirds sat amongst 2000+ other Blues fans, it was
not possible to see if it had done any damage to its face. But had I
been out there, favouring Southend as much as he did Orient, then I
would have not have been able to look at myself in the mirror when
shaving. His performance went beyond embarrassing into the reams of pure
fantasy, and it cost Southend dear !!

However as the two Thunderbird craft launched from Tracy Island earlier
in the day their crew had no idea about the mugging that they were about
to undergo. Indeed Boycie, trapped inside a cabin with a very garrulous
Uncle Albert, might cheerfully have welcomed being beaten unconscious
rather then having to suffer the bashing that his ear drums were going
through. Whenever those in the lead craft looked back, Albert's jaws
were going at it ten to the dozen. Put him up against Ruby Wax and I
know who the Thunderbirds money would be on !

Trigger and Rodney had bumped heads together to come up with a cunning
plan regarding where we were going to eat and, just as importantly, how
much we were going to pay for our eats. Whilst out and about upon his
nefarious travels Rodney had stumbled across a sheet of newspaper
blowing across the ground in the wind. Picking it up, his initial
thoughts were that it would make a handy lining for his boots but then
he was delighted to discover that the tattered newssheet contained a
number of coupons offering 'Two for One' deals at Burger King. And from
that moment on our fate was sealed.

The journey up was all stop start, but other than that we made fairly
good time. Even so we were pushing it a mite as we started looking for a
parking spot that was 'A', close to the ground and 'B', not a million
miles away from a meat bun shop bearing a crown. Trigger had done his
homework though and confidently told us that he was sure that if we went
left at the lights we would be ok, or was that to the right? Leaving him
to dither, both Thunderbird pilots just got on with the job of finding
suitable berths for their craft.

Southend fans, heading for Orients ground, poured past us as we went
totally in the opposite direction towards where the Trigger/Rodney
pratnavs assured us a Burger King restaurant could be found. We walked
past KFC's, MacDonalds and even a gym (Mike covered his eyes at this
point !) before spotting our target. Things than became rather
complicated ...

It was all Rodney's fault Anybody else would have cut out the coupons
prior to the journey, but not our Rodder's who coveted his toe warmers
right up to the very last possible moment. This meant that everyone was
negotiating for their coupons as we entered the burger bar. The floor at
Lloyds has never witnessed such scenes but eventually Mike and Albert
emerged triumphantly with their half a herd burger tokens and so calm
was restored. It also meant that Boycie could remove his ear plugs and
start enjoying his day.

Wobbling to the ground afterwards it was gratifying to see how many
other Blues supporters had made the trip. However once inside the ground
and seeing the infant school sized wooden seats that were 'reserved' for
away supporters, we did rather begin to wish that not so many had made
the journey. There are jokes and then there are jokes, and being charged
top dollar to perch on such tiny splinter strewn seats was not funny. We
were even less amused to find that our view of one of the goals was
completely blocked by a pillar. Orient really should be taken to task
for ripping of travelling fans.

The teams took to the pitch to some really dodgy music, which really
sums up the state of things pretty well. Blues were without Maher, even
on the subs bench. Something is going on there but what ? Clearly he has
fallen out with the management team over some matter or another, but in
his testimonial year his continuous absence from the team is becoming
concerning.

However, following the January transfer window, new faces aplenty there
were amongst the Southend team who were warming up in front of us. In
fact it rather took us back to last summer when we were trying to
identify who was who during the pre season friendlies. But eventually
things were sorted out, with two of our latest signings lining up for
kick off. Mulgrew was soon revealed to be a very useful defender,
merging into the back four as if he had been there all season. Not sure
what his status as a loan player is, but should Blues get his signature
on a more permanent basis then he would be a more than adequate
replacement for Hammell.

So all encouraging stuff as Blues started off the game by taking it to
Orient. A completely new front pairing made up of Barnard and Revell
gave Blues a menacing look, with both players prepared to put themselves
about. Barnard is a very quick player with loads of movement to his
game, Revell on the other hand looks slower by comparison but has a good
footballing brain which he used to good effect several times, making
wide runs which lured defenders out of position.

In fact the whole team was ticking over nicely and things were looking
good. But then McDermid entered the picture. Up to this point in the
game he had been trotting up and down the pitch looking for all the
world like a custard tart with a black boil on its bum. And, left to his
own devices, stuck up some baker's shelf somewhere he would have caused
few other problems other than being a health hazard, but now it wanted
to become 'involved' in the game and so it began to peep like a
constipated turkey whenever a Blues player dared to challenge for the
ball. No matter that Barnard was getting introduced to their number 6's
elbow every time that they went up for the ball together, no worries
that Black's shirt was being pulled each time he attempted to go by a
defender and it was obviously no problem at all that Orient could only
break down our attacks by resorting to blatant fouling. No all of that
was extremely ok as far as the stumbling berk in A.A colours was
concerned, but let a Blue shirt even flap near an Orient player and it
was deemed to be a foul. His decision making was so one sided it was
unbelievable and even when Southend players started getting injured as
Orients defensive tactics became more desperate still he would wave on
as if nothing untoward at all had happened.

Lest this become just one long rant at the referee I will stop things
here. But all credit to the Southend players for not losing their heads.
Its doubtful that had any of their angry fans got within arm waving
distance of Colonel Mustard that things would have stayed so calm. But
as it was United just got on with their game, and they were soon
rewarded by a goal. Pressure on the home goal mouth had been steadily
building and had Gower been more on his toes we might even have created
a gaol scoring chance much earlier. But it was from the third of his
corners that Clarke collected the ball. Barely hesitating to control it
he hit a powerful snap shot towards the goal which was cleared off the
line at the last moment. However it rebounded straight to Barnard who
gleefully steered it into the net to put Blues 1 - 0 up !

The Southend fans went mad, leaping up and singing out their pleasure.
Not only at the goal, but also at the manner in which it had been
scored. The fact that it put us one up against the dastardly Orient also
helped things along rather nicely too. And from that point on it was
almost all Southend v The Ref. Orient hardly touching the ball but at
his gift. It left a really nasty taste in the mouth to see how he was
ruining the game. Well certainly from a Southend perspective anyway, ask
a home supporter and they probably wanted to have his offspring !

Blues should have been given a chance to go two up shortly afterwards
when another goal bound chance by Clarke, a header this time was cleared
off the line via a defenders arm. Everyone saw it, even the Orient
supporters we spoke to after the game admitted it was hand ball, but the
referee was adamant that it was a knee. All I can say then is that the
defender must have been doing bat impressions, hanging upside from the
bar, if any part of his legs, let alone his knee, touched the ball !

Orient then scored an undeserved equaliser as Flahavan made a mess of
gathering up a soft shot, spilling the ball allowing it to run free
across an open goal. Fortunately Clarke was on hand to atone for his
goalkeepers mistake. Up until that moment Flahavan had been more than up
to the task of keeping the home side at bay during their rare forays
upfield, but that one moment of concentration lapse could have cost his
side the lead.

Halftime arrived without any change in the score but there was some
concern being expressed by the Blues fans over Barnard's performance in
the closing minutes of the first half. Sure he had been battered about
by their defence but that was no excuse for actively avoiding the ball.
But as it turned out he was feeling a hamstring and so his place was
taken by MacDonald for the second period of play.

For some reason Tilly pushed Revell, his tall forward, wide leaving the
smaller, but more energetic, MacDonald to run through the middle. Whilst
it did mean that any high balls our defence pumped forward tended to be
returned it did give Black and Gower more room to manoeuvre around
midfield. Black's play has really improved over the past couple of
games. Where it was once noticeable that he wouldn't run back to provide
cover or act as an outlet for his defence, he now covers almost every
inch of the pitch for the Blues cause. Gower, on the other hand, appears
to be in dinosaur mode in that it takes about 70 minutes before he's
warmed up enough to partake in the game. Once 'alive' he makes some
useful contributions, but oh that he could get his engine running a lot
earlier in the game !

Someone who we would have happily seen clamped at half time was
unfortunately still out there. And, just five minutes into the second
half, his whistle was chirping again as he awarded Orient a penalty for
handball. The Blues fans, with a clear view of the incident, couldn't
believe it, the Southend players couldn't believe it, even the Orient
players couldn't believe their luck. Because nothing at all untoward had
occurred save in the demented mind of one official. Yes, the ball had
hit a Southend player, and yes it had been successfully cleared away,
but no it did not hit his hand, it didn't even touch his hand, it
bounced off his chest. In any case, standing behind the player, who had
his back to the referee, it was impossible for the biased, useless,
total excuse for a torn contraceptive to have seen whether or not he did
handle it !

Still, a penalty it was and although Darren did his best to save the
resulting shot, the score line soon read 1 - 1. Now the Orient
supporters woke up. Until now their existence had been only rumour and
supposition. The home stands, with proper seats, were pretty full but as
much noise had come from them as unbiased decisions by the prat in
black. An individual whose esteem levels amongst the Blues ranks was
well below that of a dung beetle's anal hygienist.

Now Blues had a major challenge in front of them as the home team,
cheered on for whole seconds at a time by their supporters, began to put
some play together. Orient are not a bad side and generally they were as
embarrassed by the referee's largesse in their favour as we were
infuriated. So for a while the game swayed backwards and forwards with
neither team really able to sustain any pressure upon the others goal.
We were certainly not helped by some further extremely strange
decisions. For example Black got flattened, only for the referee to not
only award them a free kick but also to have a word with the Southend
player warning him against, I presume, getting fouled again !

Time ticked by as it has a habit of doing with play pretty much bogged
down in midfield. Then, suddenly, the whole game was lit up just as if a
thousand floodlights had sprung into action as Clarke scored what must
be Blues goal of the season. Picking up a stray pass close to the
halfway line, the Blues defender slowly took the ball forward, defenders
backing off him as he advanced deeper into their half of the field.
About 35/40 yards out Clarke looked up and seeing an opportunity struck
the ball so sweetly that it could have been singing 'Ring Of Fire' as it
powered past the startled keeper and into the back of the net. Signal
instant pandemonium amongst the sardined Blues supporters. Out on the
pitch it wasn't that much difference as the away team went ape. Clarke
tried to hide his delight, yeah for like a microsecond, before leaping
about like a salmon on heat. The Thunderbirds were just as bad, Mike,
his fractured rib cage completely forgotten, giving it Warp 10 !

Stuff that where it hurts referee !! You could see that he was in shock,
this wasn't on his game plan at all. He'd done his best to gift the game
to the home side, the team that he had supported since he'd been a
maggot's technicoloured yawn and they had thrown it away. Well not if he
could help it they wouldn't and so the steady stream of extremely
doubtful decisions continued to flow against the Blues. But did we care
? Well, yes as it happens, but being 2 - 1 certainly helped to prevent
an incident involving nails, some wood and a red hot blowtorch from
arising.

Orient upped their game, getting a number of corners which Blues dealt
with comfortably. And Southend should have increased their lead when a
lovely cross from Black was met by Revell's head only for the ball to go
narrowly over the bar when the whole of the net was at his mercy.
Disappointing, because 3 -1 would have been a score line that even the
referee wouldn't have been able to turn around.

But 2 - 1 it remained, and as such we were at still at some risk of
losing two valuable points. However by the time the 90 minute mark
arrived it was clear that Orient had given up. An Old Blue in the shape
of Wayne Gray had come on as substitute to liven things up for them,
which he did to a degree but United now looked good for all three
points. But then the referee played his joker, somehow, goodness knows
from where, finding 4 extra minutes to be played.

It gave fresh heart and impetus to the Orient who launched a series of
attacks upon the Southend goal. But they were all breaking down at the
edge of the area and although we were all urgently whistling, it was as
much as to see the back of the official from hell, as anything else. He
was getting desperate, no matter what opportunities he gave them, no
matter how many times he laid it on a plate for them, Orient were not
taking advantage of his overwhelming and utterly sickening support.
Still, here was another chance to award them a free kick, and so he did
... right on the edge of the area.

The free kick took some time to arrange, surely more than 4 minutes !,
but still he had to make sure that the wall was just so and a very
generous 10 yards away from where the ball had been moved forward at
least three times ! Finally, his team were getting the idea, now all
they had to do was punt it hopefully into the area and he could award
them another penalty !

Instead however a wild kick at the ball directed it only into the
Southend wall and the ball was cleared way out to the wings. A startled
hurricane flew around the Blues stand as thousands of throats went
'phew', we were going to do it. we were safe, the whistle had to go now,
surely, surely it would go ... like now, please, pretty please now ! But
no, and it was becoming increasingly clear that the referee was prepared
to play on for just as long as it took his team to score. Someone better
send out for sandwiches !

The ball had gone out to the wing where a Orient forward played with it,
uncertain about just what to do. Perhaps he should just cross it ? at
least that would get rid of the problem, and so he did. Unfortunately,
such an astonishing action by an attacking player caught Flahavan
completely out. And so he was stranded, doing goldfish impressions as
the ball went past him to be gleefully met by another Orient forward who
headed it into the net to put his side level, breaking the hearts of all
the Southend supporters, surprising the hell out of the home supporters
who had given up hope hours ago !

So, so disappointing. And against Orient, who we never get a result
from, too. The whistle went almost immediately, a signal for the referee
to be surrounded by angry Southend players along with their management
who joined in reading the riot act to the incompetent official. Not at
all the usual happy scenes that a point away from home would normally
result in. But in all truth it felt more like we had lost. No more than
that !, we had been robbed, at whistle point, by a referee who , if we
had been Liverpool !, would now be facing several weekends without a
game. But we are lowly Southend, and so, along with all the other clubs
in this league, save Leeds, we just have to lump it and put up with it.

As with everything at Orient, the TV evidence of the game was of poor
quality but surely the Football League should be invited to review the
game. Not to change the score, but in order to ensure that Mr Danny
McDermid gets shown the red card, never to officiate a game ever, ever
again !!

PROMOTION is the name of the game for Southend United new boy Charlie
Mulgrew.

The left back, who has joined Blues until the end of the season on loan from
Wolverhampton Wanderers, produced an assured performance at Leyton Orient on
Saturday.

And he is now keen to maintain that standard while also helping the
Shrimpers get back into the Championship.

"I'm really pleased to have come in to Southend," said the Scotsman."It all
happened quite late on transfer deadline day but I will work really hard and
there are a confident set of lads here.

"From what I've seen so far we look a good side as well and promotion is a
realistic target. I want to play a part in that and help Southend go back up
again."

Mulgrew began his career with Celtic and also enjoyed a loan spell with
Dundee United before joining Wolves in September 2006.

But he has made just nine appearances while at Molineux and is now relishing
the prospect of more regular first team football.

"It will be good to be more involved here," said Mulgrew. "It was a great
game to start off with but we're gutted to have let the goal in at the end
like we did.

"We should have got more from the game but we have to pick ourselves up now
and go again."

Before Blues host Hartlepool United on Saturday though, Mulgrew will line up
for Scotland's under-21 friendly in Portugal tomorrow night.

"I'm looking forward to it," he said. "It's a great honour to play for
Scotland and it will be nice to get a bit of sunshine too."

Mulgrew's fellow new boy at Roots Hall - Hal Robson-Kanu - will also be in
action tomorrow as he plays for England's under-19 side in a friendly
against Croatia at Swindon Town's County Ground.

>BLUES striker Lee Barnard was forced off at half-time on Saturday with a
tight hamstring.

"He had been struggling a little bit in the build up to the game," confirmed
manager Steve Tilson.

"It tightened up in the first half and in the end he couldn't run properly
so we had to take him off before it got even worse."

Sorry to bring it up again chaps but have been too angry to come on the Zone
since yesterday's game - now I need to get this off my chest as some sort of
"therapy."

Have to say I am also a referee like "Lord Football" and therefore try to
avoid slating officials but he was literally the worst I've seen in TWENTY
YEARS as a fan of this football club. What a contrast to Lee Probert from
last Tuesday. The tackles on Revell and Gower were disgraceful and worthy of
reds, how Terry got away with the one on Revell is completely beyond my
comprehension!! Barnard (in particular) and MacDonald were manhandled time
and time again but awarded nothing at ANY point, in fact Barnard was more
often than not penalised for being wrestled to the floor!! The penalty was a
joke decision at the time and having seen it on the Championship it look
even less of a pen. And just to sum up how bad the referee was he failed to
at the very least caution Mulgrew (I think it was) if not red card him for
pulling back Gray in stoppage time when he was "arguably" through on goal!!
Open to interpretation but a yellow was the bare minimum any
halfway-competent referee would have produced. Obviously that one worked to
our advantage but it just goes to show how bad the referee was on the day,
mostly against us but on that one occasion against them. Most of the time we
were up against 12 men so a point is a creditable result and the least we
deserved from the game.

Was great to see Tilly so livid with the ref in the centre circle at the
end, I think most Blues fans were hoping he'd hit him!! Dreadful display and
while I hate Dennis Wise with a passion I'd be tempted to have some sympathy
with him if that really was the same referee he had the ruck with at
Gillingham.

   <http://www.shrimperzone.com/vb/images/smilies/mad.gif>

P.S. Anyone know why Barny had to go off? No mention of the injury on the
OS. If he'd come out for the 2nd half I've no doubt we'd have won the game
regardless of that clown in yellow.

ient.premiumtv.co.uk/> ORIENT defender Charlie Daniels
was more than happy to take a hit for the team to silence the Southend fans
on Saturday.

The on-loan Spurs man had to grit his teeth as he sent over the cross for
Jabo Ibehre's head goal that snatched a dramatic draw in the fourth minute
of stoppage time for the O's.

Reflecting on events he said: "I knew before i put the cross over that their
player was going to clatter me, but with hardly no time remaining I knew how
important it was to get the ball into the box.

"Fortunately while it was with my weaker foot I made a good connection,
although as I was knocked to the floor I didn't see Jabo head it in. The
first I knew that we had scored was when Paul Terry started jumping on me.

"And even though my leg hurt it was great to hear we had equalised to shut
the Southend fans up.

"They had been giving it big time to our supporters, so it was nice that we
stopped them winning.

"It also means that we have taken four points off them this season and it is
always nice not to lose against one of your rivals."

Daniels also believes the character the east Londoners showed to fight back
twice against the Shrimpers will stand them in good stead for the remainder
of the season.

He added: "Even when we go behind we never give up and that showed today. I
thought we deserved the draw because Tamika (Mkandawire) had a couple of
great chances.

"The fact that we kept fighting to the end shows the character of this team
and I believe we still have a great chance of securing promotion."

For now, though, the 20-year-old's main concern is taking more points off
Tranmere on Saturday.

He said: "We beat them fairly convincingly last month and will be looking to
do the same again on Saturday.

"Since then they have been on a decent run and got a good result at Leeds
that put them above us in the table. But hopefully we can do the double over
them and move back into the play-off spots. "

Bob, wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments about the ref. I've never
seen anything like like it.

Even Ling said after the game that they got 'the rub of the green' with
the decisions. The penalty was a joke especially when an Orient defender
appeared to handle on the line from a Clarke header in the first half;
even some Orient fans we were talking to after the game thought that was
a pen ....

Danny McDermid - a name that will stick with me for a long time and
who's
name I searched for on the internet yesterday - my wife called a halt to
proceedings when I found his mobile telephone number. Even if we had won
I
was still going to write to Mr Hackett and co complaining about the most
inept/biased official I have ever come across. From the first whistle it
was
obvious he was a homer, he pulled us up for offences he let them get
away
with, he missed two horrific red card tackles v us, and naturally played
at
least 4 minutes of injury time. The handball for their penalty, a
ricochet
from two yards, baffled even the home support. I have been watching this
game long enough to realise that such performances/decisions even
themselves
out over a season but it is now February but I have yet to see any
working
in our favour - surely we would be in a play-off position now if we had
not
suffered so many incompetent officials this season. I have refereed
several
games and fully realise that it is no easy job, but this man was a
clown.
McDermid you may remember was charged by the FA for swearing at Dennis
Wise,
and snippets I found yesterday were full of incredulous managers slating
him, while one fan commented 'I stood there open-mouthed wondering what
he
was going to do next - unbelievable'. Would any listee out there kindly
confirm his 'playing' record this season - just to see if he is
basically
just a homer.

Flahavan Got away with one fumble in first half - made a wonderful save
in the second. Did well with a couple of catches/punches under pressure
and
had no chance with either goal.

Francis Steady

Barrett Won every header, usual commanding committed performance.

Clarke Wonder strike for our second (slight deflection just after it
left his boot?) was comfortable until Gray and Ibhere came on.

Melgrew - Now tallest member of squad at first I thought a bit languid
but
was simply more than comfortable at this level - wicked set piece
deliveries
- but maybe went missing couple of times out on the left at the death.

Gower - always eager, probing

Bailey McCormack Both still suffering a slight dip in form (is Mac
carrying a bit of excess timber I ask?).

Black Not bad but noticeably tired just before substituted.

Barnard Good runs, another 'sniffer' goal shame he didn't return for the
second half (serious?).

Revell Whole-hearted but maybe a tad lumbering - missed a sitter of a
header in the second half.

Great support, not one Orient player (again) caught by eye - they only
looked a threat when Wayne Gray came on - but - the referee apart - the
main
talking point amongst the Blues following after the final whistle, was
why
play a winger up front (who failed to hold the ball up when we were
desperate to run down the clock) while switching our new 6ft 4 striker
out
wide?

I was quite impressed with the Spurs loanee they had up front (Barcham) but
that was about it for me. He looked a handful whenever the ball was played
into him.

Agreed about Revell, should have made it 3-1 and no brainer playing him on
the wing at the end.

Danny McDermid - a name that will stick with me for a long time and who's
name I searched for on the internet yesterday - my wife called a halt to
proceedings when I found his mobile telephone number. Even if we had won I
was still going to write to Mr Hackett and co complaining about the most
inept/biased official I have ever come across. From the first whistle it was
obvious he was a homer, he pulled us up for offences he let them get away
with, he missed two horrific red card tackles v us, and naturally played at
least 4 minutes of injury time. The handball for their penalty, a ricochet
from two yards, baffled even the home support. I have been watching this
game long enough to realise that such performances/decisions even themselves
out over a season but it is now February but I have yet to see any working
in our favour - surely we would be in a play-off position now if we had not
suffered so many incompetent officials this season. I have refereed several
games and fully realise that it is no easy job, but this man was a clown.
McDermid you may remember was charged by the FA for swearing at Dennis Wise,
and snippets I found yesterday were full of incredulous managers slating
him, while one fan commented 'I stood there open-mouthed wondering what he
was going to do next - unbelievable'. Would any listee out there kindly
confirm his 'playing' record this season - just to see if he is basically
just a homer.

Flahavan Got away with one fumble in first half - made a wonderful save
in the second. Did well with a couple of catches/punches under pressure and
had no chance with either goal.

Francis Steady

Barrett Won every header, usual commanding committed performance.

Clarke Wonder strike for our second (slight deflection just after it
left his boot?) was comfortable until Gray and Ibhere came on.

Melgrew - Now tallest member of squad at first I thought a bit languid but
was simply more than comfortable at this level - wicked set piece deliveries
- but maybe went missing couple of times out on the left at the death.

Gower - always eager, probing

Bailey McCormack Both still suffering a slight dip in form (is Mac
carrying a bit of excess timber I ask?).

Black Not bad but noticeably tired just before substituted.

Barnard Good runs, another 'sniffer' goal shame he didn't return for the
second half (serious?).

Revell Whole-hearted but maybe a tad lumbering - missed a sitter of a
header in the second half.

Great support, not one Orient player (again) caught by eye - they only
looked a threat when Wayne Gray came on - but - the referee apart - the main
talking point amongst the Blues following after the final whistle, was why
play a winger up front (who failed to hold the ball up when we were
desperate to run down the clock) while switching our new 6ft 4 striker out
wide?

How representative is this report of last night's game on BBC? We must
have been lucky then. Of course it was all down to the midget losing.
   No credit as usual.

   Southend 1-0 Leeds

Lee Barnard got the game's only goal on his full Southend debut to
ensure incoming Leeds manager Gary McAllister will have to take over a
   losing side.

Former Spurs forward Barnard touched home in the 41st minute after
keeper Dave Lucas could only get a hand to Steve Hammell's 25-yard
   free-kick.

Earlier, David Prutton and Andy Hughes had forced good saves from
   Southend keeper Darryl Flahavan.

Tresor Kandol also fired a good chance wide, but Southend ran out
   winners.

   Agreed Ian,

   We kept a clean sheet
Great to see a 'sniffer' up front
We beat a team who featured in the Champions League semi finals not so
   long
   ago.
We can close the gap on Orient further on Saturday (unfortunately
   Thornton

As I see it he might have been the best player on the park but I think
Flahavan could have stopped it darryl saw it coming but did not move and I
don,t think the booing motivated him he is a good player, he was too good
for us as for the rest of their team they were not that good we had 60% of
the play but could not find our way to get the ball in the net, I say this
for them the closed us down very quickly and made no space for us to play
there seem to be 15 red shirts on the park still roll on Tuesday lets see
how good we are when we play a top team..

Anguish! How can we do it to ourselves. Chances missed would have covered
that mistake. 2 points lost was fair.

Lot of top teams suffered today so we missed our chance to make up space.

Good to see lots of new blood. Make everyone fight hard for the "opportunity"

I, as a fan am most impressed by this letter from the Chairman. How many
clubs would ever see such a warm, heartfelt explanation from a Chairman
concerning his club. In Mr. Martin we have a quality person. I personally
would like to thank him for an excellent explanation about what has been
transpiring at the club recently.

I hope this all means success on the field, and quality and comradeship
amoungst the players.

It is good to be a fan still!!!!!!

   Onward and upward!!!!

This from a Wycombe supporting colleague of mine, where Grant was on loan
for the whole of last season:

“Class. Grant was awesome for us, played superbly in the cup run as well.  I
think it is fair to say he likes a tackle....”

I’m impressed with our signings, particularly compared with our usual
ability to tempt talent away from our rivals. Luring Revell away from
Brighton, who should be as optimistic of promotion as ourselves, is
encouraging.

Up the Blues,
John

- - -

Agreed, but I see we signed a Chelsea starlet on loan yesterday - back to
raiding London team's reserves - good - policy that brought us the likes of
Collymore and Powell (and I suppose more recently Gower and maher).....

HAL Robson-Kanu is aiming to make a name for himself at Southend United.

The winger, who has been joined at the Shrimpers by Anthony Grant until the
end of the season from Chelsea, has yet to make a first team appearance
during his career.

But the current England under-19 international cannot wait to get starting
and hopes to figure at Leyton Orient tomorrow.

"This a really good move for me and I will be a good experience I'm sure,"
said the 18-year-old.

"Southend are a fine club with a fine team and are going for promotion.
That's something I want to be a part of and playing first team football is
something I'm really looking forward to.

"We're only a few points behind the play-offs and we really want to close
the gap."

Robson-Kanu has been with Reading for the past three seasons having
previously been with Arsenal.

He can play both on the left wing or up front and is keen to make a good
impression at Roots Hall in a bid to further his long term future with the
Royals.

"They also felt it would be good for me to go out and get games,"
Robson-Kanu confirmed.

"Everyone is pleased with the switch and now all I want to do is to do my
best for Southend while I'm here."

The youngster will be in the squad at Brisbane Road but will then meet up
with the England under-19 side for their friendly with Croatia at Swindon
Town's County Ground on Tuesda night.

"That's another game I'm looking forward to but first it's all about Leyton
Orient and making sure we get a result," the teenager added.

And Robson-Kanu is being backed to impressed by Blues reserve team manager
Dean Austin who knows the winger well from his time working as a scout for
Reading.

"They let me know he was available and we got in there right away because
Hal's a good player," he said.

"He's quick and strong and rated very highly at Reading. In fact when he
goes back there for next season he's going to be in their first team squad
and that just shows how much they think of him."

Robson-Kanu will also today meet up with Southend's sixth signing of the
January transfer window - Anthony Grant.

He can play in both defence and midfield and lined up against Blues while on
loan at Luton Town.

The 20-year-old has also spent time on loan with Oldham Athletic and Wycombe
Wanderers and will be with the Shrimpers until the end of the season.

Tuesday night's victory over Leeds United was exactly what we needed. It was
a superb performance from everyone. We all worked so hard and you could
really see the hunger and desire everyone had to get the result.

I thought the fans were great too and it created a real feel good factor
around the place which we haven't had for a while. It was suddenly like the
Southend United of 18 months ago and it was great to see, especially against
the best team in the league.

The important thing now though is that we go on and build on it. The win has
given everyone a lift - which was needed - but we have to keep it going,
starting at Leyton Orient tomorrow.

It's always a big game against then and I'm sure our fans will be there in
big numbers again so we really want to get something there.

That would put us right back in it but we know we have to perform because
Orient are just above us in the table and are a decent side as well.

We go there with a few new faces in our side and Lee Barnard has settled in
really well. He's a local lad which helps. We understand the accent although
being from Billericay he is quite posh!

Alex Revell has also come in from Brighton and he's someone we already know
because he trained with us a few years ago. He's a great lad who gives his
all and I'm sure he will do a good job for us.

Elsewhere this week myself, Stevie Hammell and Lewis Hunt have launched a
crossbar challenge competition. We all try to hit the bar from the halfway
line and whoever doesn't has to clean the other lads' boots.

All I can say is that my boots have never been so sparkling in the whole of
my career because I haven't lost yet and long may it continue!

I'm also disappointed to have to report that my defensive partner Peter
Clarke has gone and got his ear pierced. I'm not sure what that's all about
but he came in this week with a ball bearing in which looked like it had
come straight off the top of a birthday cake.

He's replaced it with a diamond one since but it's still shocking. You just
can't have a centre back with his ear pierced and I'm going to be having
words!
