Last night Shawn made a great catch and it was the #2 web gem on
baseball tonight last night. There was another play by a Diamondback that
beat out Shawn Green for the #1 web gem and that was Orlando Hudson.

My coworker was at the game and was right at that wall at the very spot
he caught the ball off the wall. So if you see the replays and see a
lady w/ short hair and glasses on the other side of the wall, that's my
coworker, Tracy. The ball could've hit her if Shawn didn't catch it.

Subject: Green a Clemente nominee
lili_6231

By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com

PHOENIX -- When the trade that sent him from the Dodgers to the
Diamondbacks went through in January, Shawn Green had a pretty long
to-do list.
Among his tasks were finding a place to live in the Valley and
coordinating the moving of his wife Lindsay, who was expecting the
couple's second child at the time, and their two-year-old daughter
Presley. But there was also something else pressing for him.

Shawn and Lindsay sat down with Diamondbacks officials not long
after the trade to discuss how he could best distribute $250,000 to
charitable organizations in the area. The pair went over both where
the money would go and how best to utilize their time making
appearances and hospital visits.

"I've always felt like it was important to be involved in the
community," Green said. "Over the years it has evolved as we've met
different people and experienced things."

It's Green's commitment and involvement in the community that makes
him the Diamondbacks' nominee for the 2005 Roberto Clemente Award.

Since 1971, Major League Baseball annually has presented an award
(originally known as The Commissioner's Award) that recognizes the
player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship,
community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team.

In 1973, following the tragic death of Hall of Famer Clemente, the
award was renamed to honor the man whose spirit and goodwill always
will be remembered.

A panel of baseball dignitaries, including Vera Clemente, Roberto's
widow, and Commissioner Bud Selig, annually selects a winner from a
list of 30 nominees, one from each club. Past winners include Al
Leiter, Tony Gwynn, Sammy Sosa, Willie Mays, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith,
Cal Ripken Jr. and Kirby Puckett.

Green has long had a soft spot for kids, but over the last few
years, he has focused even more of his time and money on infant care
after Presley suffered a bad viral infection when she was a week old
that required her to remain in the hospital for a couple of weeks.

"Just experiencing that and just kind of seeing that, you get a very
brief glimpse of what life is like when you have a child that was
under the weather," Green said. "We were fortunate that she was fine
and recovered quickly. But that's why the last couple of years we've
focused more on infant charities."

With that in mind, $200,000 of the $250,000 Green donated was
designated for Phoenix Children's Hospital ($100,000) and St.
Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center ($100,000), where the money can
have a significant impact on the children and families who rely on
the medical services at the two first-class facilities.

The money that goes to Phoenix Children's Hospital will be used to
help renovate its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, while the money
earmarked for St. Joseph's will go towards the Craniofacial Program,
which is part of Children's Rehabilitative Services at the hospital.

The Greens also donated $50,000 to the Arizona Diamondbacks
Foundation, which was established in 1997, a year before the team
began play. The money will be used to build "Shawn Green Field" as
part of the "Diamonds Back Field Building Program," which provides
first-class fields and safe places for kids to play baseball and
softball.

Money is just one way that Green contributes to the community, but
maybe the most valuable thing that he gives is his time. Whether
it's appearing at Diamondbacks charity events or other fund raisers,
there is something that Green does privately that has a very
important impact.

"One thing I always try to do is to go to children's hospitals and
visit the kids," he said. "Those are the ones that have always
struck a chord with me. The kids that have leukemia, or who are in
very difficult situations. The kids are always making the best of
it."

Though he doesn't like to talk about it, Green grew particularly
close with some of the kids he has visited. Two passed away from
leukemia and he has not forgotten them.

"It's a pretty heavy experience when you go visit kids in the
hospital," he said.

One of the children who touched Green was a 7-year-old in Los
Angeles who was disappointed that there weren't more toys for the
children at the hospital to play with. So he donated his life
savings -- $15 -- toward buying more toys and Green and others
pitched in to help and a fund was started.

"That's how all these kids are," Green said. "They see the big
picture. It's pretty refreshing when you see that type of attitude.
These kids are fighting for their lives and yet they're worried
about other kids."

Center fielder hits slam; third baseman belts three-run shot
By Daniel Blank / MLB.com

PHOENIX -- Shawn Green wasn't overly excited when he hit his 300th
home run earlier in the week. The milestone was an otherwise
meaningless tally at the end of a blowout loss to the Mets.
Green was a little more pleased with the timing of No. 301. Green
roped a grand slam Sunday in his second at-bat after returning from
the birth of his daughter to pace the Diamondbacks to a 10-5 victory
over the Phillies at Bank One Ballpark.

"We were kidding him a little bit when he was taking batting practice
today -- there was a little extra sock in his bat," said Arizona
manager Bob Melvin. "He was hitting some balls pretty good and a
little farther than he normally does, and he said he's got another
mouth to feed, so he's on a salary drive here."

Green didn't get back to Phoenix until approximately five hours
before first pitch Sunday and was sporting a 5 o'clock shadow belying
his lack of sleep the last couple of days. His wife, Lindsay, gave
birth to the couple's second daughter Friday morning, and Green
missed the first two games of the series.

Green, who was 3-for-5 with three runs, wasn't available for comment
after the game because he left immediately to catch a flight to be
with his family in Newport Beach, Calif. He'll rejoin the D-Backs in
San Diego, where they start a key three-game series Monday.

"Obviously, nobody probably would have said one word otherwise, if he
had stayed with his wife and daughters one more day," said Troy
Glaus. "But he wanted to come back and play, and he did, and
obviously contributed in a very very big way."

The grand slam was Arizona's lone hit in the third as the
Diamondbacks took advantage of Phils starter Vicente Padilla's
wildness. Padilla started in command, retiring the first four batters
he faced. But by the third, Padilla had lost his control as 20 of his
32 pitches in the inning were out of the strike zone.

"I thought Padilla, early on, had as good stuff as I'd seen," Melvin
said. "I mean, he was throwing 96 miles an hour and had good sink and
then just started getting wild with it. I thought we were in for a
tough time early on."

Padilla walked the bases loaded and fell behind Green 2-0. Forced to
throw something over the plate, the righty delivered a knee-high
fastball, and Green lined it 378 feet into the left-field stands for
his ninth career grand slam.

The blast supplied Claudio Vargas with a comfortable lead. Vargas was
coming off his toughest start since joining the rotation in mid-June.
The righty didn't have his best stuff, but held the Phillies to four
runs -- three on solo homers -- in six innings.

"I missed a lot of pitches in the middle of the plate, and that's
what they were hitting," Vargas said of his start against New York on
Tuesday. "And today, all three home runs that they hit, I missed the
pitch up in the zone and in the middle of the plate."

Vargas retired the Phillies in order in the three innings following
Green's homer, but was hit hard when he started the seventh, with his
pitch count nearing 100. Mike Lieberthal led off with a shot off the
left-field foul pole, and after a walk and a base hit, Vargas' night
was over.

Buddy Groom retired Philadelphia's 2-3-4 hitters to squelch the
rally, and the offense responded with the type of big inning that the
opposition had been putting up against the Diamondbacks during their
recent six-game losing streak.

Arizona struck for four runs in the bottom half to effectively bury
the Phillies, with three runs coming on a towering three-run homer by
Glaus.

Glaus' blast, which traveled 412 feet to right field, was an
efficient way to overcome the infield shift Philadelphia had been
throwing at him all series.

"I'm just trying to hit it, that's it," said Glaus, who also jump-
started Arizona's two-run second with a double off the center-field
wall. "I was told a long time ago when I first came up, we're
producers, not directors. All you can do is hit it, you can't control
where it goes and if it happens to go somewhere, fine."

The D-Backs head to San Diego for an important series with the first-
place Padres building off back-to-back wins that were earned thanks
to good pitching and timely hitting -- a combination they have
struggled to find for the better part of three months.

"It kind of exemplifies what we hadn't been getting in this stretch,"
said Royce Clayton, who led off the third with a walk. "You just want
to take some positive momentum into San Diego. We could've hung our
heads after the first loss the first night, but we didn't, won a
close ballgame last night, got some big hits tonight. All those
things translate into some momentum heading into San Diego."

Green getting center attention
Longtime right fielder making a smooth transition
By Daniel Blank / Special to MLB.com

PHOENIX -- When the Arizona coaching staff came to Shawn Green a few
weeks back asking him to move to center field, he knew he could make
the transition.
Green, who has played right field for most of his career, knew that,
with time, he could adjust to covering more ground and taking charge
of the outfield. After all, Green tried moving to first base a year
before.

It wasn't that Green was used to change and was certain he could do
it again. If anything, it was just the opposite. The experiment, at
first, went so poorly that when Green moved back to right, he was
that much more confident of his outfield abilities. So, when Green
changed positions in late July, he knew he could translate his right
field instincts to center.

"I think, now I'm a better outfielder for a lot of reasons -- playing
first helped a lot," said Green, who played 111 games at first for
the Dodgers last season. "At the beginning of last year, playing
first base, I was nervous. I wasn't comfortable at all, so I got back
to right field. I feel real comfortable [in center], and that helps."

At this stage of his career, it seemed more logical for the 32-year-
old to move to a position that required less mobility -- not more.
Green is seven years removed from his 30-30 days in Toronto and stole
just his fourth base of the season on Sunday.

Despite his declining speed, Green has impressed the coaching staff
through his first 11 games in center. He has proven, so far, that 12
years of Major League experience in the outfield can compensate for a
lost step or two.

"Prototypically, you look at a guy that is a speedster out there,"
said first-base coach Brett Butler, a former outfielder who has
helped Green's transition to center. "Joe DiMaggio wasn't a
speedster, Joe DiMaggio knew how to play the game. He reminds me of
that, from watching the films, because Joe just knew where to play,
how to get to the ball -- there were very few times where there was
hesitance."

Although Green has been solid so far, he's not quite DiMaggio yet. If
Green and the Yankee Clipper share anything in common, it's that
they're both often associated with the word "streak." While DiMaggio
is renowned for his 56-game hitting streak, Green has developed a
reputation as one of the streakiest hitters in baseball.

An annual slow starter, Green hit .253 in April but has hit about 20
points higher in each subsequent month. By June, Green looked like
the middle-of-the-order anchor the Diamondbacks acquired from Los
Angeles in the offseason. Green hit .306 and hit nearly half of his
18 home runs for the month.

"That's the way it is for me," said Green, who upped his average
to .294 after a 2-for-3 performance on Sunday. "I don't know. My
career's always been pretty streaky. It would be nice to be a
consistent hitter, I envy guys who are like that, just hasn't been
the case for me."

Ask the average baseball player what's going wrong when they're in a
slump and the typical response is, "If I knew, I wouldn't be in the
slump." But that's not the case for Green.

"Because I'm kind of tall and lanky my swing can get long. When I get
long, I have holes and they get exploited pretty bad," said the 6-
foot-4 Green. "When things are right, that lankiness works to my
benefit and you get that extra leverage and the ball really jumps.
But for some reason, there's not much in between."

Hitting coach Mike Aldrete has worked with Green all season on
shortening his swing in the hope that Green gains a more consistent
approach. Although Green's power numbers are down a little this year,
he is on pace to eclipse the .290 mark for just the third time in his
career -- a tradeoff he said he's happy to make.

While they try to cut down on Green's dry spells, the Diamondbacks
certainly won't mind if Green continues his propensity for midseason
hot streaks. Since the start of June, Green is hitting .317 with 14
home runs.

"He's always a little streaky, but thankfully he's in a real good
streak right now and I have the sense that that will continue for the
rest of the season," said general partner Jeff Moorad, who was also
Green's agent when he was drafted by Toronto in 1991. "I watched him
carry the Dodgers into the playoffs last season and there's no reason
why he can't do that here in Arizona."

As for my opinion, it's nice to know that Greenie is so versatile,
but it doesn't mean I have to like it. )<

Amanda! there you are! (: It's me Lili ...remember me? (:

hey, long time. I loved your story --you got a Greenie baseball!
ahhhh! whoohoo! lol! (:

Just saw the picture...guess what I saw you at Dodger Stadium on
fireworkds night no you didn't see me. I just remember that I was
there near the D'backs dugout waiting for Greenie and then I heard a
guy call out Amanda! I turned over, he was trying the get Shawn in a
picture with you as he was from afar warming up. I was like, could
that be the same Amanda from the Shawn board? but then Shawn went to
autograph farther off from the dugout area and you took off and lost
ya! )< lol!

I was first going to make sure you were the right Amanda and if you
were then I was gonna tell ya to be at the right field exit you would
have seen Shawn leaving towards the bus that night... duh!!! grr )<

I got to say hi to him that night lol! that was cool he recongnized
me and was glad to see me. He smiled and said hey!
oh yeah, he had a water bottle with him and tap me on my right hand
that was resting on the railing that was set up for them ...anyway he
tapped a little too hard Ouch! ok so he's a little rough? lol!) I
just said hey? lol! He did autograph for the people that were waiting
for him. Surpris-- no I should say Total Shock - he wasn't on his
cell phone as he exit towards the bus LOL! (I think he knew he'd
autograph) Anyway, it was pretty quick they took off quickly just
minutes after the short fireworks began. I did manage to tell him
that I'd see him in SD.

Hey, so you went to SD on July 16? I went on the 14th got there early
but no chance to say hi to Shawn and Dave Roberts it's the second
time I go and missed them. grr! )< Well this last time at least
Shawn saw me in right field ...after I yeld my lungs out -you see, it
was about the 9th inning and I got the wild idea to ask Shawn for a
base ball So I asked an usher if I could get closer to the field area
to ask, he said yes. By that time Shawn was warming up before the
inning and there were those asking for a ball I yeld and yeld and -is
he deaf? /: ugh!
ok so it was a little noisy...to make it short...the bat boy that was
warming up with him throw the ball too high for Shawn to reach so
Shawn threw out his glove to stop the ball and went after it. He was
coming my way that means he more likely would hear me but the other
crowd grew louder and beat me )< Shawn turn towards them and threw MY
ball to them )< and I'm like SHAWWWNN!!! and guess what he finally
heard he looked towards me and I think he gestured "oh! there you
are!" ...what does he mean by that?! ...ugh! )< ah! this
communitcation thing is just so difficult!

I still got a baseball but autograph by Brian Giles, the usher asked
some guy that knows Giles to give me one. That was cool but I want a
Greenie one and I like to ask for it myself, thank you. I try to
expalin that to the usher but he insisted. You know it's the second
time I go to PetCo and I think they think I'm a Padre fan? lol!
Hello? I'm wearing purple. I guess I need more purple or a D'back cap
(hey how about it Greenie?) yeah, yeah if he could read this.
So, my Grandma and I get treated very well down there. We even got
PetCo pins this time around (: oh, by the way the baseball it's
actually for my grandma, ok it's hers (: I wanna Greenie one!
back to your story...

ok so it still worked out (: you still got to see him and you got a
ball! (I think I mention that somewhere up there?) ok a little too
excited I guess...

you've got to get it autograph that is your next mission missy! (<

...you have 24 hours from the moment your read this!

ha ha just kidding. (; still, DO get it autograph. (: So, you can
tell us all about it!

great to see ya again. (:

You're sooo lucky! (:

sunflower seeds! (:

The game will be broadcast on cable ESPN 2 (ch. 85 in LA cable
area) @ 7:10pm pst. probably in the West Coast, still as always check

I hope you will get to see him and get his autograph when you go to a game in
San Diego. Some of my favorite pitchers on the Diamondbacks and former
diamondback pitchers will be in San Diego during the All-Star break. They will
be there for a wedding (one of the Diamondback pitchers is getting married in
San Diego the day of the All-Star game).

Good luck and have fun at the game. I will probably see Shawn this weekend.

ok? so you're ahead of me. )< ...but! it's four things, asking
Greenie autographs for friends does not count towards your Greenie
auto-count. lol! (;

hum? well I might just tie you. (: I'm going to a game in San Diego
after the All-Star break, so will see. lol! (<
ah! a magazine I have, I think one or two of the Dodger magazines
with Shawn on the cover. They are not autograph...yet. (<

I don't really ask him for autographs that much. I just like to say
hi to him and maybe talk to him for a while if possible. Oh, and take
pictures of him giving autographs to the fans. (:

picture with Shawn. That was like the fourth time he has stopped for
me this year. I have gotten his autograph on five things (one I gave
to a friend of mine that I work with because she is also a huge Green
fan and my friend gave me a $20 gift certificate to the Diamondbacks
team shop and I got myself a Shawn Green shirt), I have had him sign
two cards, the jersey bottle cover, the big picture in the
Diamondbacks magazine and the small picture (the pages where they
have the 40 man roster pictures). I think that is all that he has
signed for me so far.

I agree about him having his body turned towards the camera when he is signing.

He is signing the Diamondbacks magazine (there is a picture of him in there) and
he personalized it. I am happy that I finally got a picture with Shawn. That
was like the fourth time he has stopped for me this year. I have gotten his
autograph on five things (one I gave to a friend of mine that I work with
because she is also a huge Green fan and my friend gave me a $20 gift
certificate to the Diamondbacks team shop and I got myself a Shawn Green shirt),
I have had him sign two cards, the jersey bottle cover, the big picture in the
Diamondbacks magazine and the small picture (the pages where they have the 40
man roster pictures). I think that is all that he has signed for me so far.

If he stops again I will be sure to take more pictures.

you can tell Shawn is looking at what he's signing, but if you look
closely his body is turn towards the camera. (: See, he's making sure
he's in the picture as well as signing your book. (:

What book did he autographing? is it a autograph book? ok, well let
me know. congrats on another picture and this time WITH Shawn. (:

So, now you have two Shawn autographs? hum? I sitll beat you...I have

LOL! (;

Although, I think you might just have more chances then I for Greenie
autographs and might just go ahead. ):
