SAN FRANCISCO -- It was the morning after the night before, and Shawn
Green was suffering with hair hangover. The Mets right fielder, aka
Shorn Green, was no more comfortable with his new and unwanted buzz
cut Wednesday morning than he had been Tuesday night.
"I had to do it, right?" he asked, second-guessing his own submission
to the powerful peer pressure that existed before the Tuesday
trimming. "It's not very good, is it?"
When Green returned to the team hotel Tuesday, his wife, Lindsay, had
been forewarned. Her reaction: "A painful laugh," he said.
By Wednesday morning, she had become more accustomed to the change.
But she spoke some words her husband found ominous: "You look more
European now. We'll have to change your wardrobe."
And Green said, "She wasn't kidding."
Skull session II: General manager Omar Minaya joined the masses "to
be one of the guys" Wednesday, but he scarcely looked different.
Carlos Beltran, "the best-paid barber in the world," had done
Minaya's, too. Aaron Sele promised he would have his done Friday when
he gets to the clubhouse. He is posing for family photos Thursday.
Jose Reyes remained the lone holdout among the players. But he gave
it a "maybe" Wednesday morning even after Willie Randolph gave him an
out.
"Jose's got more of a style going," the manager said, as if that
mattered to the other players.
An uphill battle: One way or the other, it's going to cost you in
this city. Rookie Joe Smith now has made his first visit to the City
by the Bay and learned just that. Two room-service burgers cost him
$58 Tuesday night.
Of course, he could have gone out for his postgame meal, but he was
put off by San Francisco's remarkable hills. "And," he said, "it
seems like you're going uphill going and coming back."
This and that: The 200th victory of Randolph's managerial tenure came
Tuesday night in his 356th game. Among Mets managers, only Davey
Johnson, 339 games, required fewer games. ... Winning Tuesday night
put the career victory total of Tom Glavine against the Giants at 20.
He has a 20-15 record against the Giants, 20-18 against the Dodgers
and 22-12 against the Padres. ... The triple Reyes hit Tuesday was
the 46th of his career. It made his total past that of Buddy
Harrelson and left him 16 behind Mookie Wilson in Mets history. ...
Reyes extended his hitting streak to 14 games in the first inning
Wednesday . ... The Mets announced the signing of Brian Lawrence, the
veteran pitcher, to a split contract. He has reported to the club's
extended Spring Training.
This date in Mets history -- May 10: Carlton Willey pitched a
complete game in the Mets' 3-2 victory against the Reds at the Polo
Grounds on this date in 1963. The victory was the Mets' third
straight by a 3-2 score. Willey's record was 3-2. ... Nineteen years
later, the Mets scored twice in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out
double by Bobby Bailor to beat the Padres, 3-2. The Padres had scored
once in the top of the inning. Randy Jones pitched a complete game in
beating his former team and putting his record at 4-1. He finished
the season, his final big-league season, with a 7-10 record.
Dwight Gooden pitched the second of three straight Mets shutouts at
Shea Stadium on this date in 1985, beating the Phillies. The 5-0
victory followed a 4-0 shutout of the Braves by Ed Lynch two days
earlier and a combined one-hitter by Sid Fernandez and Roger McDowell
in a 4-0 victory against the Phillies. ... In 1993 on this date,
Eddie Murray drove in Vince Coleman in the first inning, and the Mets
won, 1-0, against the Marlins in Miami. Bret Saberhagen and Ryan
Bowen pitched complete-game three-hitters.
Coming up: After a day off, the Mets get their first look at the team
with the best record in the National League. The Brewers come to Shea
Stadium for a three-game series. Jorge Sosa makes his second Mets
start opposite Jeff Suppan, so effective against the Mets in the NL
Championship Series last season. The Friday night game begins at 7:10
ET.
Well when I got into the ballpark I went over to the Mets side to get
autographs. I only ended up getting two Mets autographs. The first
autograph I got was Tom Glavine. I almost got David Wright but I
didn't. Well when Shawn, David Wright and somebody else came over to
throw I said hi to Shawn and he turned around and saw me and smiled
and waved. Then he went over to the outfield during batting
practice. After he was done, I thought he would head straight toward
the dugout to get ready to hit in the batting cage but instead he came
right over to me and said "hey how is it going?" and he had his arm
out to give me a big hug so I got a big hug from Shawn Green. He
signed this picture I had of him, Craig Counsell and Luis Gonzalez (I
already had Counsell and Gonzo sign it) and he signed my visor that I
had made that says "Shawn Green Rocks". Then I got a picture with him
and he gave me a baseball that came over our way. Then his first at
bat he hit a homer.
You are welcome. It is hard for me to put pictures in this group
now since he is no longer a Dback and I don't get to see Shawn as
much anymore.
I will do that post right after this.

Pitchers cringe at the sight of it -- and for good reason. It's a
haunting group, that freakishly talented top half of the Mets lineup.
One mistake is all it needs to slap a crooked number on the
scoreboard. Two mistakes, and it might be a short night.
The top six command attention -- it's as simple as that. But a lineup
is nine batters long, and even the strongest core can't hide a bottom
without any punch.
And that's where those cringes turn into unabashed horror. For
there's no doubt that this bottom has punch.
Plenty of punch.
Consider that Shawn Green, the regular seventh hitter, is
batting .351 on the year. His three home runs rank second on the
team, his 13 RBIs third. Then there's Jose Valentin, a rock in the
eight hole. Valentin clocks in at .281 -- paltry by comparison,
though his 12 RBIs stand as proof of his clutch start.
They will rarely be top priority on an opposing pitcher's agenda --
there's simply too much else to worry about. But take them lightly,
and you're bound to regret it.
"It's fun to be in a lineup like this because you can't blink,"
Valentin said. "Anybody can make you pay."
Green and Valentin both know what it's like to be the centerpiece, so
if anything, flying under the radar is a breath of fresh air. It's
not as if these two are fringe hitters just happy to crack a lineup.
They're former sluggers, still plenty productive in the latter phases
of their careers.
Valentin, for one, was once a deadly combination of power and speed,
slamming 25 homers for five straight seasons at the start of the
decade. And Green was even more impressive, three times eclipsing 40
home runs.
"Pretty much everyone here has hit in the middle of a lineup at some
point in their careers," Green said. "It's obviously a really deep
lineup, and the thing that's nice is a lot of days the top of the
lineup's going to carry it and other days the bottom of the lineup's
going to carry it. I think everyone's capable."
But for former middle-of-the-order guys such as Green and Valentin,
it's taken some adjusting. Hitting in the middle can be fairly
straight-forward -- knock in those in front of you, and get on base
for those to come. But at the bottom, with the pitcher due up,
situations aren't always so clear.
There are times when simply moving a runner into scoring position
won't do, as it would at the top. Not when the next man up is a
pitcher who, even on a good day, isn't likely to get the job done. So
the bottom two always have to be aware of the situation -- not just
the number of outs, but the score, the likelihood of a substitution,
and every other headache that rarely concerns a hitter at the top.
Not to mention that with the pitcher coming up, batters aren't likely
to see a whole lot of strikes. Opposing pitchers can tread carefully,
knowing that a walk isn't as bad with their counterpart ready to step
up to the plate.
"I'm still kind of getting used to that," Green said. "I was actually
talking to some of the coaches about it, when to try and drive a guy
in from second and when to get him over. The situation dictates
things more."
Of course, all that matters less when hitters are mashing the ball
like Green and Valentin. Green has nine hits in his past 10 games,
earning him everyday playing time in right field. It's no small feat
for a notoriously slow starter who hit just one April home run last
season.
Then there's Valentin, who has hits in eight of his past nine. That
streak included four straight multi-hit games, and has the second
baseman batting .400 since April 14, a span of nearly two full weeks.

No breathers in Mets lineup
Green, Valentin producing at bottom of powerful order
By Anthony DiComo / MLB.com
"It's not easy to face a lineup that way, when the bottom of the
lineup is swinging better than the top," Valentin said. "Because
those guys on top of the lineup, even when they're struggling, it
just takes one pitch for them to change the whole game."
It'd be a stretch to say New York's top is struggling, with Jose
Reyes and Carlos Beltran in particular off to smoking starts. But
Carlos Delgado and David Wright -- a duo that combined for 64 home
runs last season -- have just one between them this April. And that
makes the pick-me-up at the bottom all the more satisfying.
"Those guys have done a fantastic job," Wright said of the bottom
two. "It's definitely easier for the guys that are struggling to put
less pressure on ourselves when we're winning. It'd just be nice to
join the party."

Yesterday the Diamondbacks traded Shawn Green to the New York Mets
for a minor leaguer. There are a few of us here in Arizona that are going
to really miss Shawn Green. He was such a great guy.
Last night Shawn made a great catch and it was the #2 web gem on
baseball tonight last night. There was another play by a Diamondback that
beat out Shawn Green for the #1 web gem and that was Orlando Hudson.
Hello Anya,
Thank You so much for all the pictures -- they look great! [:D]

I posted a picture that I took or my friend took of Shawn during ST when
he was leaving. We asked him if we can take a picture of him and he
posed for us.
My coworker was at the game and was right at that wall at the very spot
he caught the ball off the wall. So if you see the replays and see a
lady w/ short hair and glasses on the other side of the wall, that's my
coworker, Tracy. The ball could've hit her if Shawn didn't catch it.
