For those of you on the East Coast that might be interested, May 26th
and 27th at the Pennsylvania Convention Center the North American
Federation of Martial Arts National Championships is taking place.
This is a good opportunity to test your skills and add to them with
various seminars.
Visit www.nafma.org for more details.
As for me... I had a brief stint in ishin karate when i was 7 but
didn't really start training until High school. I trained in SK for
about 3 and a half years before going off to college. Before college
I went out and joined the military and gained the boot camp version of
hand to hand combat. In college I touched on various arts over the
four years including capoeira and kung fu. I returned to Shaolin
kempo a little over a year ago after asking around to find
instructors. Kempo is the art I enjoy the most and having seen other
kempo styles I believe I will stick with it. Although I am currently
not studying ju jitsu, I have also been involved in Brazillian ju
jitsu and hope to restart when my schedule frees up. Right now I'm
devoting my time to work, school, and shaolin kempo.
So... I guess I've only been training in martial arts for the past 9
years.
My name is Ed, and I train under Master Jesse Dwire at Dragon-Phoenix
Martial Arts in Massachusetts. I am very new to Kempo, started
training right after the Seminar held at the beginning of November. I
am currently 5th Rokkyu. Our lineage goes through GM Fred Villari,
Sigung Rudy Duncan, Prof. Robert Nohelty and James Bryant, and Grand
Master Feliciano (Kimo) Ferreira. Kempo is not the only formal
training I have. When I was younger I studied TKD, then did some
wrestling in high school. I then joined the Marine Corps and learned
fighting skills there. I was involved in some nasty MMA stuff while I
was in the service and for a short time after my discharge. I have
also studied JKD. I do feel different about Kempo though, I feel as
if I have found a home. I train everyday and twice a day (with formal
class) on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. I look forward to
earning my orange belt as it opens the door for more teniques.
I've noticed several new members to this forum. Maybe they could take
a minute or two to introduce themselves. It might also help the
lagging activity on this board.
I'll start. I've been involved in with Shaolin Kempo for 23 years and
recently became involved with the original Shaolin Kempo called
Karazenpo Go Shinjutsu in the late 90s. I have also studied other arts
which helped make my Kempo better, more evolved.
I opened my first school in 1992 in San Diego and have been teaching
ever since. With the coming of the internet, my abilities to share
with other like-minded students and instructors has also allowed me to
grow and learn.
For those interested and in the San Diego area, I'll be scheduling a
Black Belt Forms Seminar sometime soon. Let me know if you're
interested in attending.
Sifu Bry
This last weekend I was in Atlantic City attending the Action Martial
Arts Hall of Fame banquet. The seminars and expo were fantastic and I
hope some of you made it.
I'll post future events as I hear about them.
Tim.
Hello Mr. Baker,
Please look into www.shaolinkempo.com. Master Ingargiola has a line
of DVD's up to 4th degree black belt that may benefit you. I do not
have experience with Villari's DVD's but know Master Ingargiola
personally and would suggest that you see if his videos meet your
needs.
Tim.

I'd like to organize a black belt seminar for Shaolin Kempo instructors in the San Diego area. Would anyone be interested? It
would be open to anyone from American Shaolin Kempo (USSD, Villari's, others), Karazenpo go Shinjutsu and Kajukenbo.
I wanted to go over advanced forms and concepts. Just putting out feelers for interest.

Unfortunatly I had to work and couldn't get out of it. I couldn't
make it to the last seminar.
The next one, in AC, I already am registered for and even have my room
set to go. I hope I see you there.
I really enjoyed learning from the excellent array of masters giving seminars and the excellent bits of information that you can recieve just by listening and being open with the people attending the seminar. I was great to see Matt again and master Hatch. I was privilged enough to have master Seavey answer some of my questions with his seminar!! I was a wonderful day where one could truly appreciate the spirit of the martial arts and learn more than enough to work on for a good long time

I had a great time as well, although I spent pretty much all my time scurrying back and forth reloading the video cameras. I enjoyed seeing the folks 'doing their thing', and catching up with old friends. Maybe next time Master Hatch will want to trade places with me, though. He had the privilege of punching in for Professor Kimo for his seminars;-)
I always enjoy Professor Kimo, Professor Ingargiola's insight into the basic rank material was inspiring, Sigung Duncan was really smooth (and is so nice.), and Hanshi Seavey had great finesse.
All in all it was a banner weekend. I'm already looking forward to next time.

It was an excellent seminar, I had a great time.
All the instructors were fascinating and it was a great crowd.

I should be heading to this seminar. The seminar with prof kimo and
master ingargiola in Vegas was great. Meeting with them again and
with the other instructors is a great opportunity.

Well, I was easy to spot. I was the only guy in a blue gi. Also the
only person with the leopard patch (my school's logo). I was also
Master Tom's uke for a technique or two. In such a small crowd, I'm
sure we met.

When you get the group photograph lets figure out who we are... we may
have worked together and didn't know that the founder (me) of this
group... and the person that manages it most often, (sifu B/ you) were
actually meeting for the first time.

I think uppity people wouldn't like anything anyway, from my
experience. However, it seems that a group of initial masters could
come up with an "official for now" way of doing things so we're all
reasonably consistent across the various schools.
> Youd also have trouble deciding who ran what areas and who ran the

Being an american at heart, I imagined this thing working as a
democracy (or at least run by a board or council of masters) who vote
on things. No one would "run" things in regions, rather there would
be a board approved standard that others can use to remain consistent
with the "style" of kempo.
And there wouldn't be a grand poo-ba being the figure head. I think
that independent schools would rather be separate of those kinds of
things.

I would like to see it happen too. However, I realize that it's
A) a lot of work for the initial board of master
B) most likely unpopular with people who don't want to change
C) deciding on standards will be a nightmare
As I travel from area to area within Shaolin Kempo, I see subtle to
drastic changes/variations to material. I'm not sure if this is a
good thing for SK or not.
> I noticed you saying "sifu" are you an intructor or have your own

After training in SK for a long time, I met a grandmaster (Sonny
Gascon) who basically sparked the initial changes that manifested
into Shaolin Kempo. He learned Kajukenbo from Emperado. He taught GM
Pesare, who taught Prof. Cerio, who taught GM Villari, and so on. I
now train with him.
He uses the chinese titles like Sibak, Sifu, Sigung for instructors,
in the Kajukenbo tradition. IIRC, Prof. Cerio started the use of
Karate titles for Shaolin Kempo -- sensei, shihan, etc. I use Sifu
because my instructor granted me that title on my rank certificate.
Of course, that will beg another question. How different is the older
style from the more modern one that most people study? In some areas,
quite a bit different. How will it get integrated into
the "standards" I was proposing? I haven't a clue.
I do know that my school (the one I run), we use both old and new
style minus redundant or extraneous material. Of course, that's my
perview in my school.
lobstarodoom, thanks for the great questions. All this typing is
really helping me envision how it could work.
