Re: [Shaolin Kempo] limits

The problem is that there's so much to learn from everything that limiting to
just a few for theoretical reasons is hard. It is good to have such a
challenging question though and I think you're right, answers given today might
be different tomorrow. I guess it depends on the individual and what they value.
There is no right or wrong answer and your response did get me thinking. But I
think that clubs should also be consider and for that reason, I'd use a
crescent\ side kick and one with and elbow break for side club. For overhead
attacks, there one with a major reap I like because it lets you guide the
attacking arm past you with a straight arm. I've seen this finished with either
an axe kick to the sternum or back kick to the head, I prefer the latter because
it's faster. For the second, I'd start with a cross block up to control the
arm, the finish can be done one of two ways depending on how you circle your
arms, one is a simple take down to control the attacker and the
other will dislocate the attacker's shoulder.

I am not 100% sure that if i think about this again next week that my
answer would not be different. It all seems important but limits can
help us grow in different ways. 4 pinan for the lead kick the twist
stance the quick directional changes etc...,1 kata for the
directness of its movements, 3 kata for its circular movements, its
dynamic motion, it can double as a crane form and i sneak a
combination in there for free; 5 kata again the jumping kick and the
fighting wile moving backwards and same hand blocking counter
striking; 2 man fist set the coordination principles alone can help
ones development tremendously--if anyone feels that's cheating b/c
they see this form as 2 forms then i would substitute 2 pinan for its
high low and low high principles as well as all the grallping. The
combinations i will choose no.3 for the body manipulation and getting
behind the attacker, no.5 quick and easy chin na applications, no.10
for the circular flow and takedown,no. 11 takedown, leg manipulation
and back break, no.1 for the inside out movement and the takedown and
control of the attacker. 2 of each animal but since we do not all
have the same anmals i will just say that i would pick ones with
arm , spine, wrist, manipu;lations and ones that could easily double
for knife and club attacks.
my thoughts
Respectfully,
Marlon

pinan for the stances and pivots, statue of the crane for the
structure and balance and 1 kata because it introduces kicking &4
kata because it uses very tight circles. For combinations, I'd
start with 6&7 because they're easy to learn. I'd use #15 because of
the cross behind 19 because of the kempo roundhouse and 21 because
of the major reap. As for animals, two crane, 2 tiger, 2 dragon, 2
snake and 2 leapord.

about what's in your material and how important some lessons are in
relation to others. I thought the answer would be easier at first
but I found myself having to go through all my material to find the
answers. Sometimes we get so involved learning new material, we
forget to think about the importance of what we have.
