I still study Pilipino Arts (PMA). The flow of these systems is very
similar though I think the checking aspect has diminished in SK. The
footwork is a little different. PMA prefers moving from prada to
estoka (cat to strong stance).
One of the things that SK still maintains is the avoidance of the
strike, moving off the line of attack; and the continuous assault of
the bad guy with various strikes.
PMA has great live drills. In contrast, it feels kata are dead
drills. Live drills involves a real person picking their own attacks
and the uke adapting to the 'live' attack. You constantly work on
closing, disrupting and countering real attacks...usually with a hard
piece of rattan. Ouch.
For children, i don't recommend it 'cause you can get really hurt if
you're not focused on what's going on. Adults, however, will
immediately see how they're improving in engagements.
