Greetings,
all.
I want to *highly* encourage everyone interested in joining
the San Francisco Yeti to come to the Oakland Ice Center (519 18th
St.) this Friday (6/9/00), during the pick-up/stick time from 10:15pm
to midnight, even if you do not have equipment yet. I will be on hand
to answer questions about the team, dressed in my goalie gear (blue
& white Simmons leg pads, blue Toronto Maple Leafs jersey), and
there will also be a defenseman (John Lewis) on the team who will be
on hand to answer specific questions about equipment necessary to
play, or any other questions you may have. (If you need directions to
the rink, they can be found on the web at
http://www.oaklandice.com/directions.htm )
I would also like to use the opportunity this Friday to be
able to touch base with everyone in person, and talk to them about
various things. Specifically, I'd like to receive comments,
suggestions, and/or questions from you, and also distribute
information about our presence at this year's Gay and Lesbian
Celebration Weekend, both at the fair and in the parade.
(Fair-6/24-6/25; Parade-6/25). I've already gotten a few volunteers
to help man the SF Yeti's booth, but can always use more. I am going
to try to have some refreshments (maybe pizza? maybe a pizza party?)
available for those that volunteer, so please think about putting in
some time at the booth.
The time has come for you to seriously start making a
commitment if you want to play hockey. You need to get your equipment
together, start coming to practice with others who are going to
be on the team, and save up (if need be) for registration fees for
league play. The Fall/Winter season starts in September, which
is only about 4 months away. This hockey team can't happen without
you. It's time to stop talking about playing hockey and start doing
it.
This hockey team is just forming, and it is not an easy task
for me alone to get a fully rostered team together, nor should it be
my task alone. I am asking for your help and support, since
this is also your team. I've personally been working on several
things behind the scenes for the San Francisco Yeti, such as
publicizing the team, building our presence on the Internet, working
on setting up our place in Oakland Ice Center's league for the
Fall/Winter season, and trying to get our 501(c)3 Non-Profit Status
filed (in order for us to qualify for funding from such things as the
gate fees from the SF Gay and Lesbian Festival, and Castro St. Fair),
among other things. But I need people to demonstrate their commitment
for this to be able to work. I need people to start spreading the
word about the team, to try to get other gay and lesbian players on
the team, and think about ways we may be able to do things
better.
If you have problems with getting to the ice center, please
contact me by phone at (415) 596-3811, or by replying to this
e-mail.
Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you all on
Friday!
