I am not going with the idea that STI/ERGO eats cables faster than another system - it's possible the rider shifts more with STI, and the cable wears 'more quicky,' but it's really the same cable for any kind of shifting system, and multiple r/der cable changes a year definitely signals another problem.

That being said - it is the STI brake cable that is tricky to change on the road as they (some models) have those tiny plastic washers/spacers.

Yes - practice maintenance and keep you bike up.
