Hi All, I think John is right that the guy in the photo is Ching Allin I've taken a look at all the pictures & can identify a couple of the guys. The photos in the stadium, I first thought were at the Crystal Palace football ground, Selhurst Park, South East London ( 10min walk from my house) as photo 5 has 2 tall chimneys in the background which look like the old power station on Purley Way.. But looking further at the stadium shots it would appear there is a dog racing track around the outside and I have never heard of that being at Selhurst Park.. Time for some local research I think.. My late father when he was 14 played his first games with a couple of the guys in the pics at Selhurst Park in the mid to late 40's, so I would hazard a guess this is the era their from...
Further info: Pic 1 Background player on the R/H side is George Ongley & I seem to recall he played for the Norwood Paragon. George was very instrumental in the construction & running the the BPAGB both prior & post WW2, and ploughed an awful lot of personal money & time into the sport he was so passionate about..
Pic 2: I think this could possibly be Jim Oakley, who played for Crystal Palace BPC in the years that I knew him. I'm not definite its him, and this is not a crystal palace BPC strip he's wearing
Pic's 9 & 10 are both taken at Purley Way playing fields, Croydon, Sth London. This was considered by most British Players to be the 'Wembley' of bicycle polo such was its quality. But when the weather was bad, it was terrible due to the exposed nature of the landscape, which was originally the site of the Worlds first International Airport....
Pics 7 & 8 are quite obviously HRH Prince Philip, these shots were taken at Smiths Lawn, Windsor Great Park in 1967... The BPAGB was invited to put on an exhibition game for HRH Queen Elizabeth, family & friends, and was staged as a London v Surrey match. Prince Philip & his pals were invited to 'have a go' after the main match & they played a short game alongside some of the 'pro' bi polo players.. I recall my father saying he was a 'natural' for the game, but he alas preferred to stay on his horse! The mallet he is using was my fathers, who never used it again after its Royal useage!!!... I think it still hangs in the cupboard under the stairs at my mothers house....
Pic 16 is again George Ongley... Is this possibly a name of the stadium, or is it a press box in the roof..???? I cant get enough clarity, on my screen here
Pic 19: Looks very much like Harry Gray, another stalwart of the sport who was heavily involved with the official side of the BPAGB... He had a son who played called Les, who went on to be a famous 1970's pop star as the lead man of a band called Mud.. I believ Les now lives in the states, and would be aged approx 60
Pic 23: The player in the middle is again George Ongley
Further useless info, the Norwood Paragon players (hooped shirts) would have been in Yellow & Green
Hope this is of interest to some of you. I'm now off to research if there ever was a dog track in this part of London!!!
Denmarkis a big shame The sea is stained red and its not because of the climate effects of nature.
It's because of the cruelty that the human beings (civilised human) kill hundreds of the famous and intelligent Calderon dolphins.
This happens every year in Feroe island in Denmark. In this slaughter the main participants are young teens. WHY? To show that they are adults and mature.... BULLLLsh
In this big celebration, nothing is missing for the fun. Everyone is participating in one way or the other, killing or looking at the cruelty “supporting like a spectator”
Is it necessary to mention that the dolphin calderon, like all the other species of dolphins, it’s near extinction and they get near men to play and interact. In a way of PURE friendship
They don’t die instantly; they are cut 1, 2 or 3 times with thick hooks. And at that time the dolphins produce a scream extremely compatible with the cry of a new born child.
But he suffers and there’s no compassion till this sweet being slowly dies in its own blood
Its
enough! We will send this mail until this email arrives in any association defending the animals, we won’t only read. That would make us accomplices, viewers.
Take care of the world, it is your home!

Interesting setup in the picture above- Instead of flipping your back wheel, just use two rear wheels with different size cogs and spread your fork a little.

Hey All, It is my 35th birthday this Sunday, and I figured, what better way to spend it than a picnic/bbq and polo in the park. I'm going to be heading down to Speedway meadow with some friends for a picnic(BBQ if we can get a grill) at 1 or 1:30 on Sunday. We will be hanging, there will be beer, there will be cake, there will be fun had by all. Then when we are full of beer and cake, i'd like to play some polo. Everyone is welcome(even encouraged) to join us, bring a blanket, some lunch, whatever. It should be a pretty small group, maybe 12 people. I'll see you there Miah
I have a few choice items and maybe a bike im looking to sell at the swap. Let
me know offlist if you can help. Planning on being there all day so i can help
man a table some and/or kick in a few bucks if need be. Thanks and keep the
rubber side down:-)
hope y'all enjoyed slipping and sliding into the setting sun and didn't get
eaten alive by those skeeters.
I talked about Mt. Sutro with a few people tonight, and the trailbuilding that
both Rez and I (with dozens of others) have been doing up there.
go check out the trails - they are multi-use, very little used, and it is a
really interesting place.
map here (but go prepared to enjoy getting turned around) ->
http://sfurbanriders.org/wordpress/projects/mt-sutro-trail-building/
you can read a bit about the habitat here (note - there is currently controversy
about managing Sutro, hence some of the tone)
http://sfurbanriders.org/wordpress/resources/siggs-tree-article/
and finally, if you want to come trail build, next one is 12.5.09 (1st saturday
of month) meet at Wood lot (behind UCSF med center) around 9. Its always a fun,
satisfying morning, and then they serve us pizza and beer around 12:45

Hey Guys, I don't have grass-a-phobia, it is just a scheduling thing, hardcourt can play until 10pm. I've been busy on weekends, and trying to spend time with Alysson too. I really miss the tuesday night grass game, and Matt's moustache. F-ing daylight savings time. I'm trying to get my friend Arno into a chukkar, I think we'll be down on sunday.

I'm in--3pm?
Mentioned last night at hardcourt that the crossover needs to go in both directions. Enough with this grass-phobia.

Yeah Monica, I second that. And let us remember Doug, who comes from the outer, outer, outer Sunset to get a few whacks at the ball. I just have one question; is there ever "enough polo happening"? Cause I like my polo with a side of polo, and some polo on top. But that's just me. Miah

Yeah, the whole "it's too far" doesn't get a whole lot of cred for those of us who commute to dolores from the Richmond on our low-geared fixies. But that's just a mission thing. I get that from my friends in the Mission all the time. It's like there's an electronic fence that shocks them if they cross the border into another neighborhood. Especially one that might involve going uphill.
Maybe it's just enough polo happening so people don't need to try another variety. But still--I don't think I was as reluctant to try hardcourt as some of the people I've talked to. But maybe I was and just don't remember...it was all so long ago.

Hard court has grown largely
through word-of-mouth and passers-by stopping to check it out. (OK, we have gained when top players from other cities move to SF as well.) Grass has gained new people in the same ways. Both sides are growing, let's not worry about competing for the swing players.
Michael,
Last time I was down at the grass game you mentioned having ski poles
to donate to the hardcourters. If you have some love to give, bring it
down, and I'll get your pole into someones' willing, empty right hand.
And then everyone will be happy.

Last week was the first game in eons, and it felt rusty but really really great.
Where's Mo and Miah and LycraMan (OK he's in San Rafael) and Ferris and everyone else who's been absent?
Hi Mo, you know I didn't mean to make this a public discussion. I hope you take the following as constructive.
Perhaps a representative sample could be obtained by employing a more scientific and structured design, at a modest impact to the cost of the study. One idea would be that participants are recruited and selected (controlling for self-selection bias) and provided the free use of an i-phone for their participation in the study. This type of research is quite common and can be done for a reasonable budget.
Crappy data is crappy data. A ton of it only weighs more. Being cheap crappy data does little to make the voter feel like the program is worthwhile. The risk is that energy will be spent to analyze and report on the data only to be met with these criticisms when it really matters.
Regardless, efforts to plan for improvements to the bike network are noble. Thank you for whatever part you are playing. -j
Most surveys/data collection have bias, especially if they are low budget.
We are leveraging existing infrastructure, not blatant discrimination against you "berry"d folk
For $10K we have an app that will do a better job and/or less expensive of recording cyclists movements than:
1) standing on corners
2) individuals surveys
and, truth be told, that iPhone use is so widespread, that this will be an ok representation of who is biking in SF. agreed it represents the money'd folk of this town, and better understanding and representation need to happen, but sometimes its just a cost-benefit analysis.
