Another unseasonable warm October weekend for some golf.
Tim, myself and the Elder Lescalleet ventured West for the first
tourney at Shawnee State Park, in Bedford. We got to play a with
Barrett and his buddy Matt. Shawnee is a little course with a lot of
potential. Currently only 9 holes, it plays a lot like Wilson, but with
hills. Five of nine baskets were on a hillside, which made for some
interesting putts. It plays fairly quick; we made it around 4 times
total in about an hour and a half playing time. Only one hole managed
to withhold the deuce from us; but given a few more shots I think I can
get it close enough for a putt. It was about 180ft, severely uphill at
the finish, left to right shot with two trees right in front of the pad
and woods to the right. The low line drive anny is pretty much taken
out of the picture with the trees and the hill making the window about
5ft. I played a big turnover Roc shot over top of the trees, and just
couldn't find the right amount of power to turn too get it high enough
up the hill without turning it into a roller.
After it was all said and done, we turned in a 22 for 9 holes, and
took second place to an amazing group of high school guys that claimed
a 19. We had fun, and got to talk disc golf with some tournament
organizers that really didn't know disc golf. I hope the people in
charge of Shawnee know what a great park they have, and hope they
expand the disc golf course as well. Killer potential.
Sunday we saw seven come battle it out for tags, and some battling
took place. This was also the first time we played with the new
additions to 17. If you haven't seen it, you should check it out. the
construction crew has a nice little silt fence running the entire
length of 16's fairway, and halfway down 17's as well. There's now a
sediment retention pond (empty for now) at the bottom of 17, with some
huge piles of dirt right in the airway. Construction fence and silt
fence now line the OB Wetlands area as well. For the time being, we're
going to play the construction fence as the OB line, but still
extending the line down 6's fairway to the steps. This makes the area a
little smaller on the left, but deeper towards 17's basket.
