hey all,

can anyone sending cheques please make sure your team name is written on the
back so I know who it applies to. Likewise, if you're doing a bank transfer,
please indicate your team in the reference or something, or drop me an email
once you've sent it over so I know to expect it.

Can all captains drop me an email as well, saying how many teams you think
you'll be needing, so I can guage interest.

cheers

Tom

All,

Some concerns / questions have been raised, mostly relating to the price of the
tournament, amongst other things, so just clarifying a few points. WARNING: This
has turned into quite a long email, so the two most important points are
summarised first, and then there’s a longer explanation addressing specific
questions, which I still suggest you read.

Two important points up front:

# Following people raising issues, I’ve negotiated a discount – so the team
fee is now only *** £100 per *** team
(Immediate refunds will be given to those already paid up).

# Basically, it’s still steep on price yes, but that’s not my fault –
it’s costed on a realistic budget, mainly bumped up in price because of
expensive hall fees.

More points below…

--

1) "£110 per team is quite steep for an indoor one day tourney"

I completely agree, but needs must. Although the cost is high for a one day
event, I'd just like to reiterate that the price will cover hall hire
(un-avoidably expensive), an admission fee costed per player to save you all
hassle on the day, and trophies. Originally set at £110, it now still also also
includes a small surplus to cover any unexpected costs that might arise (ie.
maybe scoreboards etc).

HOWEVER, i've been negotiating with the sports hall all weekend, and HAVE been
able to get a discounted rate on admission fees (now £1 per person, not £2),
so I am already able to offer a REDUCED team fee of £100 instaed of £110.

Anyone yet to send cheques or do a money transfer, please only send £100.
Anyone already paid up will get a £10 refund now.

For info, this is the budget I’m working from:

INCOME
16 teams x £100 = £1600 income

COSTS
whole hall (3 pitches) = 100 an hour x 11 hrs = £1100
admission fee = £1 per person x (number of teams [16] x 10[rough estimate of
players on a team]) = £160
trophies = roughly £30
might have to buy scoreboards etc too

total projected expenditure = £1290

equals £310 lee-way

This budget also guards against the possibility that not enough teams will
enter, which would put me personally at a loss, seeing as I’m fronting the
money - perhaps an unlikely situation, but nonetheless a possibility. It also
gives scope for further refunds / subsidy at a LATER DATE; I’m not in a
position to offer this now until I get a more definite picture of final costs.

--

2) "What - no party?"

Regrettable, but as it is now a one-day event, I'm going on the basis that
people won't be staying over anywhere, so a party isn't needed – if people
really want to have a party, then I’ll try booking a room in a local pub or
something, but I can’t see people staying, and it’s a tad unfair on the
drivers…

--

3) "What - no accomodation?"

Regrettable, but as it is now a one-day event, i'm going on the basis that
people won't be staying over anywhere saturday, so it’s not needed.

For teams travelling further (ie. sublime / mohawks), I'm happy to try to
organise for you to break your journey overnight on friday (maybe with Brunel or
another uni, being just off the M25 in west london) - on the same lines as
indoor open regs, this could be subsidised

Otherwise, there is a Travelodge in Hatfield, and other ones dotted around,
which will do cheap "saver" rates on rooms if you book at least 21 days in
advance – a family room holds four

--

4) "We would like a refund"

Closer to the event, as I said before, especially once I have a better picture
of the number of teams signed up to play and when I know what final costs will
entail, I'm going to look at refunds, or the possible subsidy of accommodation,
travel, or something like that - the more teams that enter, the cheaper this
tournament can get.

--

5) “Its not very convenient, meaning we will be up early and playing right
through till 7 - its a long day, and will more than likely effect the level of
ultimate” & “It’s too early a start”

It’s not convenient, and yes, it is a long day – but then so was open indoor
regionals, where the majority of teams played out their games in one day, and
there was also an early 8.30 am start.
On the plus side, you get Sunday off though to lie in and do (heaven forbid!)
something non-ultimate related…

--

6) “Will we still get to play 7-8 games?“

You will still be getting a large amount of pitch time with three halls being
available - we'll just be fitting more into one day, instead of running it over
two, and you should easily still get the same amount of games, probably longer
in length too.

--

7) “It’s out of term, so it’s a travel nightmare for one day”

That’s one to take up with the UU committee – they’re the ones who set the
dates, I just bid for it.

On the subject of bidding, I was the ONLY BIDDER for this event – and I bid
using the only hall and time slot that was available to me, which turned out to
be a one-dayer at an expensive venue.

So, if people want cheap tournaments, then quite simply MORE PEOPLE NEED TO BID
to give the regional coordinator a choice who to award an event to – here,
what we’re left with is not an ideal situation, but does ensure that the
tournament still goes ahead, be it at a greater cost.

--

To summarise / conclude, I understand ALL the issues raised, and sympathise, but
it’s not my fault, so don’t bite my head off. I too am a cash strapped
student, and I’ve already stripped this tournament to its bare bones already,
while still trying to give maximum pitch time, which means an unavoidably long
day to do this in, and making sure I don’t make a loss.

Hey folks,

Ladder League was invented in the South East to encourage us to use to
our advantage the fact that our teams are much closer to each other
than, for example, those in Scotland - playing more semi-competitive
games against each other helps us all improve. See the original idea
here:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/seuniultimate/message/125

We (as the South East) should aim to perform so well at Nationals,
that the SE gets awarded four Div 1 spots next year (basically, avoid
coming in the bottom 5 and get two teams in the top 5 of Div1 and/or
Div2 and we've got a good chance).

Anyway, what I'm trying to get at is that we should all be arranging
more ladder league events for Wednesdays & weekends. It's really easy
- just find enough space for a few pitches, figure a good date, and
send an email invite out. We had 9 teams playing yesterday, with
barely any work needed to organise it (just a bit of running around
between the pitches on the day), and free for everybody. Just do it!

The results, which I'll be posting to
http://www.regionalultimate.co.uk shortly, were as follows:

Mohawks1 7-4 Chichester Cobras
Disc Doctors 6-3 UCL
Mohawks2 2-6 Brighton Panthers
Mohawks3 0-8 UCL2

Mohawks1 7-4 HU
Disc Doctors 9-2 Chichester Cobras
UCL2 9-3 Brighton Panthers
Mohawks3 0-9 UCL

Mohawks1 9-4 Disc Doctors
HU 7-9 UCL
Brighton Panthers 7-10 Chichester Cobras
Mohawks2 3-13 UCL2

Thanks to all the teams for making the journey down, not minding too
much about the interruption of the first game, and enjoying a drink
with us afterwards (special mention to dD!)

Felix

Hi all,

Sorry to spam entirety of UU but needs must.

--

** SEUMIR - South East Uni Mixed Indoor Regionals 08/09 **

SEUMIR will be held on Saturday 17th January at the Uni of Hertfordshire Sports
Village in Hatfield

http://www.hertssportsvillage.co.uk/

AL10 9EU

The venue is easily accessible immediately off the A1(M) if driving, and is also
within walking distance of Hatfield train station, which goes to Kings Cross.

The whole hall, including 3 pitches, is booked all day on the Saturday, 8am -
7pm.

--

Please note: This is a ONE DAY TOURNAMENT - there will be NO play on Sunday
18th. As such, there is NO official party, and also NO offer of accomodation as
it is at an independent venue not affiliated to a university team - anyone
travelling from further afield may want to try asking one of the London-based
teams to help if they want to break their journey overnight on Friday...

--

We have space for 16 teams initially, although the likelihood if this being able
to be expanded depending on demand is good if needs be.

The tournament will cost ** 110 ** per team initially

- part refunds *may* be possible at a later stage however, particularly if the
tournament is indeed expanded.
- your team fee will cover hall hire, trophies, a payment to cover admission
(the centre normally charge 2 per person admission usually, but i'm
incorporating a cheaper flat rate into the fee that I will pay them on team's
behalf), and anything else I may have forgotten.

Please send entry cheques for 110 per team
payable to "T Howard"
to me at my address:

Flat 2 Clarendon House
39 New Road
Linslade
Leighton Buzzard
Bedfordshire
LU7 3HJ

Alternatively, bank transfers can be arranged - email me for details

Please send separate cheques for each of you teams you wish to register to play,
with the Team Name WRITTEN ON THE BACK if possible - cheques for first teams
will be banked immediately, cheques for second and third teams will be kept in
the order they arrive and most likely banked at a later date.

Each university is GUARANTEED at least one spot, for their first team, until
Monday 8th December (that's nearly 4 weeks) - after this point, any spaces not
filled by uni first teams will be offered to any 2nd and 3rd teams on the
waiting list, in the order that cheques arrived. Let me know if payment by the
deadline is going to be a serious problem (i.e. you have a slow SU finance
system...)

Can ALL CLUB CAPTAINS / PRESIDENTS please also email me details of:

- Your University & Team name
- How many teams you wish to enter
- How many people you think you will be bringing (to help me negotiate the flat
fee for admission)
- Team Contact with mobile number and email address
- Likely mode of transport (they want to know numbers for parking)

PLEASE ALSO EMAIL ME IF YOU ARE ** NOT ** PLANNING ON ATTENDING SEUMIR - that
way I know not to hold places for you and can let reserve teams know sooner...

I'm expecting to hear from (apologies if i've missed anyone):

Surrey Scorpions
Sussex Mohawks
Portsmouth Sublime
Imperial Disc Doctors
Chichester Cobras
Kings College Thrown
UCL
Essex Disc Devils
Brunel
Royal Holloway HU?
Kent Touch This
Reading Dragons
Roehampton
LSE

Hope that all makes sense...

looking forward to hearing back from all the captains and recieving lots of
cheques...

Hey Everyone,

Mohawks are hosting a Mixed Warm Up tournement the weekend before
regionals, on Saturday 10th January.

This is for those teams who want to iron out the creases before
regionals.

I am only charging enough money to cover hall time so if each team
could send me a cheque for 30 that would be great.

Address to send cheques to is:

4 Upper Lewes Road,
Brighton
BN2 3FJ

Made payable to: Christianne Birtwistle

Number to call for more info if required is: 07766554391 or email on:
christianne.giggles@...

Write the name of your team on the back of the cheque, and give me a
contact name and number.

If cheques could be in by 5th December that would be awesome.

Yo,

Not this Wednesday but next Weds (the 12th), the Mohawks invite you to
attend a Ladder League event running from 2pm-5pm at the Sussex Uni
fields. It's outdoors, almost certainly free, and the Mohawks are
planning on having a first team plus two fresher-heavy teams for you
to play against. Three games per team is likely, with first teams
playing vs first teams and 2nds/freshers vs 2nds/freshers where
possible.

Lost property from the weekend:

Beige scarf
Navy blue Addidas tracksuit bottoms
Black XML/PDF Form Designer Beta 2004 T-Shirt
Grey fingerless Gloves
Grey Postal Service T-shirt
Black & White Nike Shorts
White Knee (?) Support
Beige Cargo Pants

A lot of beige and grey there, South East! You have a week to claim it otherwise Si Weeks is going to be looking very chic this winter.

Schedule:
I think there was a lot of suspicion towards the schedule before the weekend but I only heard good things during the tournament. If anyone had strong feelings that they didn't mention on the day, send me an e-mail.

Tournament gubbins:
In future, if the 2v3 game is a rematch of a semi-final, the earlier result will stand and the game won't be played. 2nd teams will in future be seeded exactly where they should be, even if this means there are 2nd team seeded above first teams.

Nationals teams:
The last I heard is that Div 1 is in Southampton on the 29th and 30th of November. The other last thing I heard is that Div 2 is going to be in Manchester on the 22nd and 23rd - THIS CLASHES WITH CLUB OPEN REGIONALS. Remember that if you don't take your place at Nationals, your seeding will be harmed at the next regionals event (Outdoors in this case). Start organising your teams now!

Rules:
The Surrey freshers have been asking me about lots of different rules and I thought that the best way of getting them reading the rules without it being boring would be to make a few questions along the line of: "If you drop the pull indoors and the disc goes out the side of the endzone, where should the disc come in from?" and making it into a worksheet type thing for them. They might think that it's a load of old rubbish though... If you'd like me to send you a .pdf of the final thing to get us confident on the rules for the next tournament, give me a shout.

Cool, well done everyone.

pugh
ps Good luck to all the women's teams that are shlepping to Cardiff this weekend for Regionals. Good luck!

Hello,

Here is the schedule and captains pack. Any other questions can be directed at me via e-mail or at the captains meeting. To quickly run over some commonly points though:

1. The pitches are NOT astroturf. Normal Indoors shoes are fine.
2. All teams have the SAME pitch time as each other. The ones fighting for qualification just have their games on a different day.
3. If your performance means that you don't need accommodation, can you let me know so I can make sure another team get put up.
4. The venue WILL BE COLD in the morning. Bring tracksuits and jumpers to potentially play in.
5. Please respect the venues Fire Regulations and vacate the hall if you are not playing. If you'd like 1st team players to support 2nd team players, please be reasonable about how many you actually need to do this.
6. No calls should affect another teams following game (keep them short enough so everyone gets their alotted pitch time).
7. Spoon and plate will be awarded on the Saturday evening. Spirit and the Cup on Sunday. If you're teams wins spirit and isn't there to collect it, I'll give it to your first team or find you at another tournament as soon as possible.
8. The venue is right by Leyton Orient's stadium. E10 5JY.
9. This is the last tournament where a 2nd teams aren't automatically seeded ahead of first teams in the South East.
10. If you haven't received the schedules thanks to yahoogroups, give me a shout and I'll sort you out.

Hope that clears some questions up.

Hello all,

In an attempt to give you all a headstart with organising your transport for the weekend. If these timings mean that you do or don't need accommodating, please let me know. Reading and Essex still need accommodating, can London teams please step foreward to help out? Likewise if you are from either of those teams and think you now don't need accommodating, let me know.

The timings are like they are as we're only allowed a certain amount of people in the hall due to fire regulations. This means 2 groups play then *must leave the hall* whilst the other two groups play out. It's for your own safety. I sound like a mother.

Anyway, here are the timings - as usual, send your hate mail to li51jp@....

Captains meeting is at 8.
Teams with an 8:30 start:
Brunel 1, Cobra Chi 1, Disc Doctors 2, Sublime 2, HU? 1, Scorpions 3
Teams with an 8:50 start:
Mohawks 1, Thrown 2, UCL 1, Kent 1, Scorpions 2, Disc Doctors 3

Captains meeting is at 11:30.
Teams with an 11:50 start:
Thrown 1, Roehampton 1, Dragons, 1, UCL 2, Mohawks 3, Scorpions 1
Teams with an 12:10 start:
Sublime 1, Disc Doctors 1, Essex 1, Mohawks 2, Cobra Chi 2, HU? 2

So group A starts at 8:30, Group B at 8:50 etc etc...those are your groups.

Seedings are thus for the weekend, taken on a 1:1 ratio of last years indoors and outdoors results.
1. Brunel 1
2. Mohawks 1
3. Scorpions 1
4. Sublime 1
5. DD 1
6. Thrown 1
7. UCL 1
8. Chi 1
9. Kent 1
10. HU? 1
11. Essex 1
12. Roehampton 1
13. Dragons 1
14. Mohawks 2
15. Scorpions 2
16. Sublime 2
17. Thrown 2
18. DD 2
19. UCL 2
20. Chi 2
21. HU? 2
22. Mohawks 3
23. Scorpions 3
24. DD 3

Cool. There are couple of discrepancies for the 2nd teams to ensure there isn't 2 teams from the same uni in the same group.

Only the Top 8 from the Saturday will play on Sunday for the qualification spots. If this means that by the end of Saturday, you aren't going to need accommodating, please come and find me. I will be around all day(s). As will Sweeks.

Captain's Packs and Schedule to follow this evening - probably to your team contacts too.

Hey all,

This weekend, Mohawks and Brighton are hosting a one-day friendly hat tournament open to both uni and club players alike. So if you fancy a bit of frisbee, come on down!

So, the details: The hat tournament is happening this Saturday 18th October from 1-4pm on Russel's clump at the University of Sussex: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=russels+clump&sll=50.833696,-0.127371&sspn=0.007034,0.013819&ie=UTF8&ll=50.856351,-0.104284&spn=0.02812,0.055275&t=h&z=14

Bring the usual light and dark Tshirt, water, snacks, and football boots!

Then, to celebrate, we are also having a houseparty in town, which you are welcome to come along too! The theme will be Hats! So start with some kind of head gear and base your costume around it.

Hoping to see some of you down here! Let me know if you can make it, and I'll also send you directions to the house. Any problems, give me a ring on 07753 214 536

There is now only space for 1st teams from Kent, RUF, Sublime, Brunel and Brighton. Any other cheques received for 2nd teams will have their names added to the reserves list (which we used 2 of last year if I remember correctly). If cheques aren't received from those 1st teams by the deadline, then the space will be offered to the reserve list.

Accommodation.
Can London teams PLEASE ask around their players to organise floors for travelling teams.

So far, there are 5 teams that need accommodating for Indoor Regionals. I expect a couple more to request some floor space in the next few days too.

So the new question is:

"Who wants to earn 125 for their team?"

Answers on an e-mail please, London teams...

Dear James

I'm not sure if you are aware but BUCS (new BUSA) now has an official charity - Right To Play (www..righttoplay.org.uk). I started playing ultimate at Durham Uni and now play for Clapham. I also work for Right to Play and we want to recruit ambassadors from every uni to represent Right To Play at their institution. Knowing the high calibre of people who play untimate, I am keen to get lots of ulti players to apply to be ambassadors.

I would be very grateful if you could send the following email out to your mailing list of Club Presidents asking them to forward it to their members. The email will you some more about the charity and the ambassador initiative. If you have any questions about any of this, please ask.

Best regards

Right To Play

Dear All

As someone who has played sport all my life I know that for most of us sport plays a big part in our lives. Its something we enjoy doing because its fun and rewarding and it keeps us healthy.

But did you know that sport can also make a difference to the lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children throughout the world. Right To Play, an international children's charity, makes this happen everyday in 24 countries in Africa, the Middle East and East Asia.

Right to Play is the new official charity of BUCS (the new BUSA) and we want to recruit an ambassador from every university to champion Right To Play and serve as the connecting point between BUCS, Right To Play and the student body. Visit the website below to find out about all the amazing benefits of being an ambassador and how to apply.

http://www.students4righttoplay.org.uk/studentambassador.html

Apply now and enter the draw to win a signed Frank Lampard England shirt. The deadline for applications is Dec 1st.

With your help we will be able to reach even more children in even more countries, giving them the chance to experience the thrill and excitement of playing, competing and learning through sport.

Best regards

Regionals places are now open. you need the following 2 pieces of information:

1. Make Cheques payable to SIMON WEEKS. 95 per cheque. Seperate cheques for each of your teams.

There you go. Let the flurry commence!

There will be 4 pitches on the Saturday and one on the Sunday. This means some teams will be finished on the Saturday. These are likely to be the lowest teams in the lower positions. Please be aware of this - especially if you are bringing multiple teams.

Each team has one place guaranteed until the 17th of October if a cheque is received before then.

Dear South-Eastern uni Ultimate captains,

it is getting closer to the set date for indoor open regionals (1/2
Nov) and we have yet to receive any bids to run the tournament.

We have had an acceptable bid to host the tournament outside the SE
region in Southampton however that would mean excess travel for
competitors and I was hoping that someone would step up from within
the region to run the tournament.

If you are thinking of putting a bid together please get in touch,
preferably before next Tuesday.

Thanks,

South-East,

Just a reminder to the 6 teams intending on entering Nationals, you should be trying to get a cheque out to them ASAP. Let's make sure we send 6 teams this year so as to not harm our seeding etc etc.

I know Chichester are dying to be allowed to go so if you have any doubt in your minds as to whether you can get a team together, please give me/them as much notice as possible.

Also, can all treasurers please just check that your team has paid for all the tournaments they entered this year, I hear a couple of tournament directors (notably Indoor Nationals) still haven't received all their entry fees.

And finally, Is there anyone interested in running for South-East Uni Coordinator next year? Please get in touch with me if you do.

Nice one

Hi All

A select few people will know but most will have no idea who i am or
that I intend to run the London marathon on April the 13th.

It has taken me two years and one aborted attempt (due to injury) to
make it this close to the start line.

There just over a week to go before my date with the tarmac and
potholes of the roads of London.

I am doing this in memory of my late Granddad who supported NCH for
many years in his own unique way. I am not him, never will be, but I
can continue to fundraise for them in my own way. This is the first
(and hopefully not the last) of my fundraising events. I have put in
the hours and now just the easy business of sightseeing round central
London, on foot!

Please dig deep and sponsor me (online), be it because you are
thinking `rather him than me', or because you want to see me in lots
and lots or pain, or just because it is close to the end of the tax
year and you need to fiddle the books.

To steal a famous supermarket line `every little helps' so no matter
how big or small your donation I thank you.

Enough of these words, I am told fitness is good for you!

However, if you ask my work colleagues I am not sure that they believe
this be true. The number of times I have come into the office with one
injury or another.

I invite you to visit my fundraising page
www.justgiving.com/davidjjreed and donate if you can.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is
also the most efficient way to sponsor me: NCH, the children's charity
will receive your money faster and, if you are a taxpayer, an extra
28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now! Do not put it off, act on impulse. You will
feel better for it.
Moreover, come support me if you are in London that weekend!

Many thanks for your support.

Regards,
David Reed
