The SE University Development Squad is going to need shirts. I have a quote
from Lookfly: for cotton tshirts.
48 x £3.50 = £168.00
3 x £18.00 screens = £54.00
48 x 3 x £1.00 print = £144.00
Total cost = £366.00
Ave cost per shirt = £7.63
Cheers for now!

The number comes from 12 unis x 2....x2 for a light and dark shirt.
It is easy to have the same screen for each shirt, you can change the
colours for free. So what we are looking for is a design for these shirts.
There will be a print on the back which says
SE England Universities
Ultimate Frisbee.... or something to this effect
But on the front it is up to who ever makes the best design. We dont have
long though. it is looking like first open winter league will be in early
November.
J and I thought it would be sensible if the clubs paid for two shirts
each...then further shirts could be paid for by individuals who train with
or make the teams. We thought it was sufficiently prestigious that you can
only buy a shirt if you are selected by your university to train with the
squad at least once.
So lets have all designs by the end of next week. And vote on them and get
the money in by the end of the following week so that Lookfly can produce
the shirts before Open Winter League One.
Designs can include two colours on the front.
cheers mal
Hi everyone in the SE
this is a reminder that the first SE University Development practice will
be on the 9th of October. in a months times.
due to the debate that has gone on via this email list in the last week or
so some people have emailed me to check everything is still going ahead as
planned....it is!
Each university. there are 12 in our region now. is able to send five
players to the practice. and two of these will be selected for the first
Open Winter League. if the numbers are good a second team will be selected
as well.
It is upto the university to choose the five that they send. they can be
selected on merit, willingness to improve, ...any five that can attend its
totally up to you. If you dont send ANY players to the practice your
university will lose its slots for the following Open Winter League.
Training will be on Clapham Common. it will begin at 10:30 where we will
warm up and drill till 12:30. at one we will resume and drill before
playing games. afterwards we can all go to the pub together to socialise
and share ideas.
Alex Bowers from Clapham and GB is likely to attend, to run drills etc. as
will hopefully Rob Alpen. These are the captains and coaches of the most
successful team since the tour began. An opportunity for you to learn from
these two guys but also an opportunity for you to make your self known to
them!
Come prepared to work hard and learn lots.
Once you have decided on the five you will send please email me with them,
and list their experience etc. just so we have an idea how to structure the
day. For some of you this may have to wait till after first practice or
so...but please have the info to me before october 1st
thanks mal
Brunel, Clapham

Hi all!
Ok, after deliberation with the commitee as well, it appears I'm the only
one really hung up on the principle of the thing so along side with the work
Malcolm will be doing for the South East Development team, he is going to
run the South East Student league at a cost of £10 per team.
Lets now get stuck in to this term!
What I want now is an email from every club Captain and President, most of
you I know already but it would be useful if you could give me your phone
number aswell - and what I want to know is whta you plan to do for Fresher's
Fayre - this is obviously the most important part of the year as far as
recruitment is concerned and you can easily double the size of your team if
you want to! Just let me know what your plans and schemes are, I will make
any suggestions I can, or help in terms of resources where I can. If you
could also let me know when the Frehers's Fayres are if you know.
I appreciate most of you havnt got you commitees in place yet - but the
deadline for indoor regional bids is Monday 4th of October. I also want to
know whether your team will be avialable for Wednesday afternoon games
against local teams (where possible!)
I think thats it for now, as always, feel free to contact me at ANY time if
you need to!
'J'
SE Uni CoO
Hi guys,
Will just jump in here - sorry for slight away-ness, I am currently
finishing a field trip in Scotland, so computer time is rare - back to full
time work on Saturday!
My concern from my email blunder is of course that I have implemented Mal
here, you all know and I just wanted to remind you all, that Mal is doing
loads for Ultimate and wants to do more - after more discussion of details
(but easily in time) the SE team will go ahead - I can think of all sort of
long term implications of this idea as well as the short term ones (eg, a
base for starting new uni teams, the isolated players in an Ultimate barren
uni will get constant support and training from the team whilst working to
set up a new team etc) Mal's ideas and drive to get this done will make it a
success.
However for the league - some of you see problem, others are fine with it -
as far as the cash in concerned - well its obviously not a huge bank bust -
unfortunatly - it is literally the principle of letting ANYONE make
significant amounts of money from University Ultimate. We all here -
including Mal have put so much blood and guts into this voluntarily. "Is
this the 'price' we have to pay to further the success and commercial
viability of Ultimate and our region?" which is something we want to see.
That is the question me and the commitee will discuss and sort out, there is
NO gripe at all against Mal, it will be awesome if he can run this, letting
me concentrate on grass-roots development, networking and building and
encouraging teams, would all rather get this sorted soon, and will do!
Cheers for all your thoughts guys, we are all on the same side so lets keep
this talking and make the South East the strongest region in the UK! Will
let you all know when appropriate

Hello All,
I, too, think the idea of this student league is great. I have one question
though. Why is this league costing anything? Are there any ground hire fees?
Do cones and scoreboards need to be bought? Surely they can be borrowed? I
understand that Malcom has reduced his profits from this tournament by
offering us a generous discount, and he is putting a lot of time into this,
but J Hunter is offering to do the whole thing for free. I am not the most
astute of businessmen, but when given the option to pay for something, or
get the same thing for free, I naturally go for the free option. Why is this
tournie/league any different? Is Malcolm offering anything in particular
that I don't know about which J couldn't provide?
I know it's only a tenner, and I'm not a destitute student, but I have had
to fight for every penny my club is getting this year (we've been given a
marginally improved, but still piffling, budget), and I have a
responsibility to reduce costs for my team in every way I reasonably can.
I'm sure we don't mind paying a tenner, together, as long as we feel we've
got no choice about, but why pay and play, when you can play for free?
Thanks for reading,
Manny

Hi All
Not sure how the club'll pan out this year. But we've got a stall at the
freshers fair, which should be a boost.
The idea of a SE Uni Team at winter is great. I'll make sure some guys
get sent along. With respect to SE league, I agree that Malc do put in a
lot of work and asking each player to give him a quid or so isn't
excessive. But then again I only ever think of tournament fees being
paid by the players rather than a club, and I would expect to pay £15
for a day out.
I'll get in touch when i know how many members we have, as to whether we
can get a team in.

ok
the tournie isnt going to cost £20 anymore.
but i still think the tournement itself is very useful. and should be done
alongside the clinics and entering winter league. We need to get our open
teams out playing against each other. it is another way to learn...and test
things out.
its a shame this has kicked off but i guess it only has done because money
is an issue.
i spend all my money on ulti and saw £20 per team as not a lot to pay. this
was what it was last year and a lot cheaper than your average shmindoor
tournie.
i want to run this tournement and would like to suggest the fee is reduced
to £10 and that is made free for teams entering for the first time. ie
Reading, Essex, Kingston.
Cheers Malcolm

Having read all the replies to this subject:
The £20: it costs us £75 + £50 to send a team to London for the day in a
mini bus and the petrol, adding £20 which 'J' should do for free equals
£145 out of the club accounts for 1 day of ultimate. It is ultimate that
we would want to compete in so would send our best squad so not get the
full benefit of our full squad.
The SE Team: again £40 on petrol over a weekend to play open winter
league, and that is just petrol; the accommodation fees would be
greater. I understand that 'Clapham' is the epicentre of Ultimate, but
the expense for teams outside the capital is great, however anything is
better than Limited Talent for those who are committed enough.
I personally would want to send teams to as many events as possible, but
we have to look at cost, the detriment to the club practices for the
loss of those players and the overall impact on the club growth and
maturity to see if these initiatives for those out of London really
benefit SE Ultimate.
I would prefer to see weekends where we got together and did the drills
etc and then played each other in mixed games as the more beneficial.
These all need discussion within the community and our committees but
they are starting points.

Hey man,
Cheers for getting that sorted [the winter league] - one thing - why the
£20? Those pitches are free and if your charging for your effort in
organising it, then thats why I'm here and I do it for free! UCL for eg
have
withdrawn from thier uni, they may be rich still, but I dont see any
reason
why anyone should have to pay anything. Sorry if I've missed something
obvious, please get back to me asap so we can get this sorted out. (I
have
copied this to Rich Hims for accountability's sake and so you know I'm
just
not going off on one!) Cheers man! Hope to hear from you soon!

So the library closed, and I'm now at home with very little idea where I was or what I was talking about...
I'll cut my losses and sum up... Essentially I think this is a great idea, players will be introduced to Ultimate as it should be played (ignoring the freezing temperature, rain, sleet, snow, rock hard ground etc...), they'll benefit from the experience of playing top 8 teams, and hopefully opponents playing style, competitiveness and training mentality will brush off on SE uni players, and they can take this back to their teams.
How do we know what to aspire to when we don't know how good we can be?
There are bound to be issues for universities so far as sending people to each training, but with the large planned player base there should always be enough people there for it to be beneficial.
This system doesn't have to alienate less good players, it's at each clubs discretion who they send, whether it's the best 5 players or 2 great players and 3 others of varying standards who they feel will benefit most from the training, and who will best be able to pass the information back to the rest of the club.
As an aside, great work to 'J' for setting this group set up, it's awesome to have people voicing opinions and getting involved and talking to each other, let's mantain the enthusiasm this year and make sure we get some SE teams in the top 4 and top 8 at Nats come April...
See you all for Winter League and the injury-fest that is Schmindoors... yay!
I really like the idea of a SE student team... I understand that a few people are a little cagey about the idea, but in my opinion the (almost) certain benefits outweigh the possible problems.
For some teams (the email from Essex being a perfect example) the main thing stunting a fast development of their individual skills and team ability, is not fully conceiving how awesome Ultimate is, and the high level at which it is played by so many people.
This will be a great opputunity for players to share enthusiasm, skills, drills, approaches to the game, rules etc etc and be able to take the enthusiasm and skills back to thier club.
Running out of internet time, will have to re-log in... end of part 1... God damn public libraries...
Sounds like a good idea to me. I cant speak officially for Surrey these days, but ill be pushing to send some players.
Hmm, a university team beating RedDog..... where have I seen that scenario before!!!

haha.............this will be a first division team!
why doubt yourself. there is a strong base of good players in the SE. We
are going to practice hard together. Then we are going to go out and win
games.
It is a personal choice for some if they dont want to be part of it. but i
think you will beneifit personally as much playing in this team....as you
would playing for a team such as RedDog or Hammerage. If you were going to
go and play for Fire thats different. but not many students will be.
With this option you get to play open with a lot of players of similar
standard to yourself. and improve on the way. but you also get to take all
that back to your team....to every team.
also i hadnt mentioned it before. but it can be arranged that some of the
top coaches come to run the clinics. ie rob alpen from Clapham and GB.
there isnt a better coach in the country and we would all learn a hell of a
lot just in one day a month
its good to hear other views but lets not procastinate ourselves out of
something useful

yup im pretty sure phil will have trouble defending me all season :-)
yeah. it also depends when your team practices. brunel dont have regular
weekend practice. we practice tuesday night and wed and friday in the day.
with wednesday night for indoors.
If the call is still positive in the next few days I will ask each uni to
think about who they are going to send to the first one. and who can commit
to the first winter league. So that i know whether to enter one or two
teams

Hi
In Mal's Defence (wont catch me doing this too of tern)
i got the impression that its more a team of players that can be spared
for this. If you can only send two its a Worthy sacrifice for the club
to play hot box for one training (chick it out its a quick moving two
on game, but avoid the contact version). as i said in my last email
consider whats important for you, the club and ultimate.
As for the competitive demo at freshers fairs, sounds great.

Couple of points, firstly, Fresher's Fayres and the like, one thing
that
Holloway and Surrey are doing is a demonstration game - the advantage
of
getting an outside team in rather than an internal thing being of
course the
increased profile of having a more competitive game to show. If teams
are up
for this but dont know who they would play just send me and email and I
will
sort out who can go to who, (its a two-way thing of course!). This will
also
serve to kick-start the season and interaction between teams.
I would also like comments on Mal's ideas for a SE team?! My only
concern
would be that it stops the better players playing with first division
teams
and getting experience and tactics that way, and as Kai said, may be
tricky
for smaller clubs - deffinatly some sort of joint ventures are needed,
perhaps training days as well as tournaments will really work, like the
UCL
beginners tournamnt a few years ago that ran drills for half the day,
thoughts and comments back to the group please!

This sound great malcolm. Just the sort of thing we need. I think the
clubs need to think who they actually have to send to this because the
top players may well be committed to open teams already. What I'm
really saying is that players need to learn to practise quality not
quantity.

Hi,
To me this really sounds like a good idea. I'm the president of the University
of Essex Team, the Victims. We are quite a new team and haven't really got into
the uni tournament scene yet which I hope to change this year.
I think this would really benefit new teams that have a small base. Last year
our club had 20-30 members although not everyone turned up all the time. On a
good practice we would get enough for a 7 a side but most of the time we had
just enough for a 5vs5 with a sub here or there. Although we have some keen
members it's really hard to develop the game with them if we don't have enough
people/experience for a good practice.
Also as one of the more experienced players of the team, I found it really
frustrating that I wasn't improving my game as much as I wanted to. I think
these plans would benefit keen players that want to improve their game. Also it
would give new interested players an insight into the levels that is needed for
playing uni ultimate.
Another benefit as Mal mentioned is the sharing of drills and ideas for
training. Although I know the how the game works and the rules of the game I
found it pretty hard to run a practice. I started playing ultimate in college
and just played the game and didn't learn any drills. I've been learning drills
and been looking up drills on the internet but its quite had putting it all into
practice since I don't have the coaching skills since I wasn't really coached
myself. I think it would really benefit people like me to try and get this
knowledge so I could give better advice to the team.
That's the main benefits I can think of in relation to my club. However I just
thought of one disadvantage that it might give. With teams with a small base,
sending out 5 players to a regional practice would actually mean the players
that have been left behind wouldn't get a practice or a good practice for that
week. Although the benefits might outweigh the negative aspects of this, this
might cause a slight segregation in the team which wouldn't be such a good idea
for a small new team. Although the people attending the practices would change,
some people would always be left behind.
I also think that opening practice date (Saturday October 9th) would just give
help to the big teams. With big teams it would be fine, as a few players could
go to the SE practice and then the rest of the experienced players could run the
practice back at uni. However with a small team that just got to know each other
and want games together you just can't take players out of one first uni
practices and leave the others stranded. Also that weekend may actually be the
first practice for some universities. Essex university is a late starter and our
freshers starts on the 4th of October with the freshers fair being on the 9th so
there's no way our team would actually make it to that.
Anyway that's enough from me, but definately a good idea in my opinion.
Thanks
Kai
University of Essex, the Victims.

the first university winter league of the year will happen on the 13th of
november
as last year this will be an event for the development of outdoor
university teams and for outdoor university ultimate in general
it is hosted in the SE, on Clapham Common the venue of the Open London
Winter league but all university teams are welcome. last year OW! joined
some of the south east teams to battle it out on the common.
the date is set for the 13th, a saturday and will only change if indoor
qualifiers falls on the same weekend. there will be one more University
Winter league before christmas after this one.
So with the UCL outdoor beginners tournement, then the following two
University Winter leagues we can see that outdoors ultimate is moving on
leaps and bounds as was hoped at the University AGM
Last year was a development stage for the tournement but this year as
subscription increases and the regular dates are set, points and finals
will be organised. so that we will have a clear winner.
if you would like to enter a team please post a cheque for £20 to:
Malcolm Cannon
130 Latchmere Road
Kingston Upon Thames
Surrey
KT2 5TU
you are welcome to enter two or three teams from one university. However a
limit of 16 teams will probably be set for the first event. If heavily
subscribed I will work out more pitch space and a useable schedule.
Expect to play 4 hard games against teams of similar standard to yourself.
if you have any questions please email me. also email me to let me know
your cheque is in the post

Hi guys,
As a lot of you would have read from Judas' email, the dates for Indoor
regionals are;
6/7 November*
13/14 November*
20/21 November*
27/28 November
basically any weekend in November preferably one of the first three*
If you can send your bids to me as soon as you can, or let me know if your
team is planning to enter a bid at least, I wont set a deadline yet as I
appreciate the holidays do throw people out a bit, but by the end of
Setember I would like to have a good idea. If you would like to submit a bid
for the Indoor Nationals they will be in the first few weekends of December
(hence the preference to an early regional date) and you can submit via me.
The London League is planning to run on every second Saturday of the month.
I woudl really like every team that can get into London to play this. Its a
really good oppotunity to play a variety of open teams, and more match
practice the better. If your club would struggle to get a regular turnout
then I will try and join teams together.
The Student league will also run from November (after UCL's beginner's
tournament - just to remind possibley newer teams that its vital to get the
beginners into a tournament as they see what the sports really about and
they can grasp the atmosphere). The format of the student league still isn't
finalised as I am still deliberating about having more localised meetings
aswell as a full one, ie, west london, central london, south coast etc - but
whether this is feasable of course depends on travel times etc. I would
appreciate people's thoughts - reply to the group so people can hear each
other's views.
I think thats all for now, I would advise clubs to be planning thier
Fresher's targeting now if you haven't started, and get some cd's from
Lookfly to give out!!
Cheers all!

we first have to find out when winter league proper is scheduled to start,
so that we can schedule this league. i think 2 weeks after winter league
would be best, as its half way between winter league dates. i agree that we
need to do it far in advance, and get teams involved now - we need a decent
number of uni teams from the SE to make this worthwhile.

hi i would definately like to organise the saturday winter leagues again.
i will also endevour to invite down strong teans from other regions to add
to the strength of these tournements
i would like to book the dates as far in advance. it personally think
taking teams to these tournies is more important than sending beginners to
indoors. but also feel clubs are becoming big enough to go to both if there
is a clash.
what date would suit? week after winter league? fortnight after winter
league?
who wants to commit to a fortnight after UCL beginners
please email me or the group

Also, just to let you guys know that we will be pushing this year for
Ultimate to get into BUSA (some clubs dont get funding unless they are BUSA
sports so this can't be a bad thing). I know there is always alot of talk
about this, but 'apparently' BUSA have decided to ignore the Sports
Federation or whatever ruling about Sports and accept Ultimate if enough
Unis back it despite Ultimate not being official! Will keep you all posted,
and expect you guys to get your uni's behind this! We need you all!

Hi guys,
Ok, I would like to get discussions started for the South East League next
year, I belive UCL already have their very successful Beginners Tournament
organised for 23rd of October, I hope everyone can get a team out to that,
would be awesome to have a team from every University - would really show
the new players what its all about - as well as the scale of the sport their
getting involved with - would be very impressive!
But then after that what? The indoor season is deffinatly going to be the
first term only so can teams start sending in thier interst to host the
indoor regionals? And I know one bid for the Indoor Nationals has already
come in so and one interested might want to start thinking!
The deadlines for bids are set and I will send them out, I cant remember
them off the top of my head I'm afraid but I belive the Nationals are from
the Middle of December and the Regionals a month before.
This raises the question, do teams want to have regular - say twice a month
outdoor competitions in the first term? (the practicalities of which will be
discussed below), or some indoor tournaments as well to build up training -
not just for regionals - but for the nationals, or nothing beyond the London
Winter league which I imagine many teams are playing in?
The twice a month idea I think is vital to increase networking of teams -
and to raise the standard of our whole region as at the moment we dont
appear to be too strong Nationally! And to avoid distant teams travelling
too far regulaly one idea is to use Wednesday afternoons to have more local
tournaments within smaller regions, eg London - Imperial, UCL, Kings, (dont
think I've forgotten anyone?!) or West London - Holloway, Brunel, Surrey,
Reading, maybe Cambridge if thats not too far. I mean - football teams will
travel four hours - to play for 90min - although I think thats crazy - we do
need to step up our levels of commtiment as clubs if the sport is to
improve.
So I know many teams train on Wednesdays but one Wednesday a month, and one
Saturday all day tournement in London like last year, aswell as possible the
London Winter league, would make for a busy but active month.
Sorry thats long - but mayeb people could just reply to the GROUP with thier
opinions to get the ball rolling - I want this ready to start in
September/October! I hope your all having a great summer!

P.S. Thanks for those who replied about the trophies - that will go ahead,
(to those who missed that, the commitee raised getting Uni Ultimate some
proper large possibley sponsored permenant trophies, funded by every team
(although only a small amount needed) - and Im sure regionals ones are a
good idea)

Hi guys,
Just a couple of things ,one thing being discussed by the Student committe
to advance our case with BUSA is to get expensive permanent trophies set up,
with sponsorship etc, you know, big impressive ones! That teams take home
with them each year etc - Finance has come up, can I pressume that most
teams wouldn't mind putting in £10 or something? Maybe we even want a
regional one?! Peoples thoughts please so I can come back saying 'South East
are up for/not up for paying!
Another point - incase any of you are not on Britdisc, (I wasnt untill a few
months ago!) lookfly are doing coverage of the worlds in Finalnd, might be
cool to get your teams to sign up and get the info - sorta keeps the
Ultimate vibe going for people who aren't so much into it - gives lots to
talk abut next term!

Hope you guys are all well!

Hi guys,
This is a quick 'Hello!' to all of you guys who have joined the group so
far. I hope you are all having a brilliant summer. Basically, the thing that
is most on my mind is improving the play of our whole region, most probably
by increasing the play of the region. I would like to discuss the
possibilities and practicalities of playing games with local teams on
Wednesday afternoons, training camp-like things maybe aswell etc etc, to
really get every team striving to be better. Some teams will really lack
motivation for thier players but other teams have heaps of motivation that
they can share. The first stage I belive is to increase communication -
hence this message group.
Another point that I first need to discuss with the Uni committee, is really
pushing all uni teams to get involved with local schools. Although my team
has yet to make a commitment, I have been to a few schools and they all LOVE
the sport and really want us to come in more - as students we have the time
to do this. Grass roots Ultimate is the way forward for the whole country I
belive and it doesn't take away from our own advancement - but I do need to
check that I'm not stepping on anyone's toes!
It would be great if you could all throw in your comments, suggestions etc
as to how we can get this region more involved, interactive and advancing!
Lets get the discussing over as quick as possible and get it working for
next term. (It would also be great if you could let us know what team you
are in - most people do - just so I can get a record of whos around!)
Thanks for your time guys!!!! Will see many of you at the Brit Open, do come
up and say 'Hi'! (incase you dont know me, I'm a ginger haired guy playing
for Holloway Hammers with 'Hunter' on my back!)
