Dear All,
I don't know how many of you are familiar with Calella but essentially it is a
HUGE multi-sport tournament held in Spain with teams from all over the UK
descending on the place for a long weekend of sports and parties. Think of it
like Paganello but with hundreds more people and many many more sports going on.
Ultimate frisbee traditionally does not feature on the line-up but I think it'd
be pretty good it this changed. I have spoken to the organisers of the event and
they have agreed that if enough interest is shown then they will put Ultimate
in. So, this e-mail is being sent to gauge interest. Please respond to myself or
to the group if you think it would be something your team would be interested
in.
What is more, it runs the week before (at least it did last year) Paganello so
would be a great warm-up!!
Let me know your thoughts, or feel free to e-mail me if you want more
information.

SE, Here is a bitesize e-mail packed with informative goodness:
* Your players need to be fully paid-up members of the UKUA to play at REGIONALS. This is as cheap as £5 per person. I will be checking rosters if I smell a rat. This really is for your benefit, it ensures everyone is insured etc etc.
* The schedule is out, please contact me if you think you should have received it, but haven't yet.
* We're playing to the new UKUA Indoor rules. Have a gander here: http://www.ukultimate.com/system/files/UKU%20Indoor%20Rules%202009-10.pdf There is plenty in there that intrigues and informs. Please don't come along spouting rules from the the 1986 UPA version of the rules that a bloke in the pub sold to you...
* Please, please, please keep as many of your players informed by getting them to join the yahoogroups and don't just rely on one player to keep y'all organised and informed. Missing out on Regionals because of miscommunications reeeally sucks.
* Please remember that there are plenty of new players playing this weekend. Keep Spirit of the Game a priority. Make sure your freshers receive as many pointers on how to play fairly as they do on how to play hard.
Apart from that, see you bright and early on Saturday.
(BOYS reading this: obviously not a weekend for you BUT if you
know that none of the women at your university will see this,
please pass it on to them).
Brighton Women and Squaws (Sussex Uni Women) are proud to announce
that we are holding our first ever 'women's weekend' right here in
Brighton.
With a skills day on Saturday aimed at all levels of university
ultimate (beginners, improvers and experienced), your players will get
a chance to hone their skills outdoors before competing against and
playing with some new people in the Hat Tournament on Sunday (provided
they've recovered from partying on the Saturday night!)
Squaws are currently UWON champions and Brighton Women placed 4th
at UKUA Women's Tour last year so you can guarantee that the quality of
play and coaching will be high! We're also aiming to keep costs low (max. £5 per person for the two days, depending on how many people come).
So if you're interested in booking a place for your university or just yourself, drop me an email and let me know:
- whether you're interested in just the skills day, the Hat Tournament or both
- how many beginners/improvers and experienced players you'll be bringing (a rough estimate would be enough at this stage)
- whether you will need accommodation on the Friday/Saturday night
- your contact details - phone number and email address
If you're not entirely sure and are curious to know more, drop me an email at msvhurst@... and I can answer any other questions.

Hope you've all defrosted from yesterday after playing Ultimate in some pretty cold conditions this weekend.
This was our first tournament that we've held in Chichester so I'd be interested to get some feedback on how you thought the tournament went. We'd like to hold future tournaments here at Chichester, so any suggestions on how to improve the event would be appreciated. Also, if you have any positive comments, that would be great as well, so we can pass these on to our SU to encourage them to let us hold future tournaments.
Also, from reading various posts on Britdisc, I believe that there's some work being done on the whole spirit system (the one we used this weekend). If you've got any comments on how that worked, if you send them to me, and i'll put them together and send them to the relevant person.
Cheers
Matt
PS. I've got a bin bag full of lost property from the weekend, but it's in the boot of the car at home at the moment... i'll sort through that and send a list later in the week.

Thanks to everyone involved. Particular mentions go to Pugh for sorting out all the scheduling issues, and DD2 and Surrey 2 for insisting they go out and play the final match for 17th place in spite of the snow and freezing conditions (DD2 won the game but ‘Ultimate was the real winner!!).
Matt
PS. A comment on the spirit scores. It is a more time-consuming system for the tournament organisers to run (i.e. collating a large amount of spirit sheets) but I think it’s worth the effort to do this, and it gives a truer indication of how spirited each team is perceived to be.
A further issue is that it seems possibly easier for teams lower down in a tournament to get higher spirit scores, maybe as there are less contentious issues to deal with in a games at the lower end. Maybe that is something to be considered when this spirit system is being developed (with this in mind, a special mention should be made to Brunel and Mohawks 1 who had particularly high spirit scores whilst playing in the top 6 bracket for most of the weekend).

Just to let you know, a schedule and captains' pack has been e-mailed to all team captains/contacts for South East Open Regionals this coming weekend in Chichester.
Please make sure your team contact passes this information on to you. If anyone in on a team where the contact might not be as 'efficient' at passing on information (not singling any person out but this might apply if you're from a certain South Coast team that play in purple), then maybe you might be interested in e-mailing me directly for this information.
The BBC's forecast says sun for Thusday to Sunday which is good news!!
Just working on some last minute stuff before we send a schedule and captains pack out.
We have got a 24 team tournament planned, but yesterday a team dropped out. To make sure everyone gets equal pitch time, and to keep the schedule 'neat', we were wondering if anybody could raise an extra side (at a cut price of £55).
Also, if you have some 2nd/3rd team players who want to come along, get in touch, as another option might be to combine 2nd team players to form a joint team (which would be better than having 23 teams and an uneven schedule).
Please let us know if you can help out.
Matt

All,
Aplogies for delay in announcement.
Jan 17th saw South East mixed regionals take place in Hatfield, Herts, over the
course of one day, in a plush three pitch venue with great facilities at the Uni
of Hertfordshire.
Fitting 2 days of Ultimate into one, games were still itense despite coming
thick and fast, and high standards of play were evident throughout, both in
terms of competitiveness and in Spirit - including a sudden death grand final
coming from behind to win, a sudden death game-to-go to hold off a spirited come
back, and a well matched plate final, as well as every single team getting at
least one spirit vote.
Results as follows:
1) Thrown 1 (KCL)
2) Mohawks 1 (Sussex)
3) Disc Doctors (Imperial)
4) Brunel
5) Sublime (Portsmouth)
--- TOP 5 QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS
6) Chichester 1
7) Surrey Scorpions 1
8) UCL 2
9) UCL 1 [PLATE]
10) Thrown 2
11) Mohawks 2
12) Brunel 2
13) Reading Dragons
14) RUF (Roehampton)
15) Chichester 2 [SPOON]
16) Scorpions 2
SPIRIT - Mohawks 2
- this was a tie between Reading, in their first ever mixed tournament, and
Mohawks 2, with Mohawks taking it home by dint of beig the higher finishing
team. Various other teams were not far behind, as spirit was incredibaly close
accross the board
Slightly marring this, both my pitch discs were piked at the end after the
presentation, after I'd gathered them in, which is dissapointing.
Lost Property - only 2 items were handed in to me, plus a couple of discs.
Black "Viva la Vida" Coldplay Tshirt
Black "VX Racing" jacket
White disc, SUMO Canada Ultimate, Jiliane Heather #10 Flaming Galahs
Pink disc, Ultrastar, Pugh's (probably left it behind on purpose... ;-)
Good luck to all at nationals.

'RUF and Tumble; Layout or Get out' is back for its second year!!
Indoor Tournament held in south west london for both uni and non uni teams. 16 places minimum
depending on interest we could open it up to more teams. Last year the layout and killer mac competitions
showed off the awesome skills of some of the players from every team only surpassed by the fantsy frisbee.
All of these are making a comeback this year.
Like last year we've a kick ass party planned with a huge mix of music and quite possibly a DJ battle
from our 2 lined up. The uni bar will be opened for the glory of cheap drinks and lets not forget the 3 pint challenges !!!!
If you're interested send me an e-mail with team name, contact name and number and contact e-mail and how many teams you want to enter/ how many players you want to send.
And to secure a place read the info below:
Here's the important part:

My bad... there were two versions of the SEUMIR schedule on the excel
spreadsheet - a draft and the final one.
The schedule we will be using is "v.3.0", NOT "v.1.0 TH"
I have changed the file on the egroup

See you Saturday,
Tom
p.s. one thing I know i forgot to mention in the Cap Pack... I'm bringing bin
bagsm at least one for each team... Use them!
if anyone else wants to be added to the reserve list, let me know. Likewise, if you have to drop out, let me know AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, so HU have a chance to enter in your place...
due to a lack of take up / interest, regionals will now definately NOT be more than 16 teams now - we had 3 pitches all day on the saturday, but have now reduced this to 2, meaning the tournament cannot be extended, as time will be tight.
- on the plus side, this will mean a partial refund of entry fees (amount TBC closer to the time); most likely i'll bring my cheque book to the tourney and give the refund straight to the captains of the teams there
further details:
- it is looking like the SE region will be qualifying 5 or 6 teams (TBC by the UU committee) to go to nationals
- a 5 team schedule has been written, subject to approval by the UKUA scheduling committee, and uses the UPA qualifying format which is effectively Triple elimination as usual.
- if 6 teams need to qualify, then a schedule will be written that also uses a UPA standard qualification format.
That's all for now, look out for more info in the new year (captains / contacts especially, as i'll be trying to keep this off-list as much as possible now to reduce general spamage; it's also unlikey the egroup will let me send out a schedule as an attachment)
Happy xmas and new year to you all, and maybe see some of you at the Copa tomorrow...
Still waiting for responses from a number of teams re. SE open outdoor regionals (see original message below).
Thanks for the swift responses from Sublime (2 teams), Disc Doctors (2 teams), UCL (2 teams), Reading (1 team), Mohawks (2 teams).

As the deadline has passed, its now first come first served for the remaining
spots. As things stand, its still a 16 team tourney, so someones going to be
dissapointed - i'd suggest the team reps chase up their SU finance depts and /
or club treasurers ASAP! I'm sorry, but I can't hold places, as I need to cash
cheques to pay for the hall.
Hi all,
Just a reminder that 1st teams have just over ONE WEEK left to enter before the
initial deadline is up - that'll be nearly 4 weeks gone.
The deadline is Monday 8th December - a cheque that comes with the post on the
monday, or bank transfers (details on request) completed, gets your first team a
place.
£100 per team.
After this deadline, the tournament is first-come-first served for 2nd teams on
the reserve list, as I need to settle up to invoice with the sports hall soon.
Payments recieved from:
