Hey all, great to see the discussion kicking off, please keep it up
and if you have anything to add to anyones points or disagree with
what's being said then let your voice be heard!
Addressing a few points:
I imagine next years LL events will be more themed, so as well as
specific mixed and womens events, the host teams can suggest what kind
of skill level they are hoping to attract. Geo teams (for want of a
better term for open/club teams) aren't always going to want to play
A-level games, as Gemma says, they too will have beginners staying
after the summer and will want to give them opportunities for playing
outside of training / LWL. Some, like Clapham and Fire, have players
on trial during the September-Jan period, so could be encouraged use
LL games as a test to see how their new players perform as part of a
team.
Conversely, some uni teams would love the opportunity to play highly
competitive games against the geo teams in their region. I can't
imagine a significant number of students will choose to play for their
geo team over their uni team in the weeks leading up to regionals.
Shimmy and Jim are worried about fixtures changing to weekends, or a
weekday/weekend team divide happening, but I see the inevitable rise
in weekend events as simply more opportunities for uni teams - it is
not necessary to attend each and every single LL event (although
Roehampton made a sterling effort to last year), so more fixtures
simply means more choice of who, when, and where to play. Maybe a
small uni/open divide will happen, but there will definitely be some
overlap, at least in that uni teams will travel to their local geo
club events.
Gemma makes a great point about building the connections between geo
and uni teams too - uni players will then feel more welcome at the geo
practices, and the geo teams will be more aware of the female uni
players & be able to recruit them for the Mixed Tour, as well as many
other benefits of having a strong uni/geo link like in Brighton,
Leeds, Bristol to name a few...
I also think uni teams will be far more active than geo teams, so the
league winners in the end are more likely to be students, which would
raise the profile of the University Ultimate regional/national events
somewhat!
