Well said! Wasnt the brand for a criminal under sentence of death in
France the Fleur de Lys? Only the French would show such patriotism in
   their death sentence victims :)

BTW -

>I really haven't done more then glimpse at a few Period Sources.
>Yes, I know, I have uttered blasphemy, in some eyes.

Not at all. Most people have a difficult time learning from a book -
especially learning physical movements. That's why there are teachers. Our
job is to disseminate the information in such a manner that it's understood
and eventually internalized by the student.

That's also why several of us try hard to go to far away places to help the
understanding grow, sometimes at our own expense.

If you are attending the Trimaris Rapier Academy/A&S event this weekend,
I'll be teaching two classes on Northern Italian Swordplay/Capo Ferro. It
should serve to give you a good basic idea of the building blocks.

Hey! No comments about my height, Mister Lord Corbin. While I may be
horizonely and vertically challenged, my toes are NOT hairy, nor do I
have three breakfasts, elevens and two lunches before one.
I am insulted!
Humph!

Try to be helpful to the Frenchman and this is what happens. Stabs you

Yes, I know, I have uttered blasphemy, in some eyes.

When I started, I barely knew what end of a sword to hold (ask Stefan-he

Book learning is nice, but not always practical. I'm a Show Me kinda

So, a teacher in the hand is worth two barely comprehendible manuals any

More on the fleur de lis

Those FUNNY Fanatics:

In the autumn of 1685, the season of his gruesome encounter with
his dentists, Louis revoked the Edict of Nantes. Protestant worship was
deemed a criminal activity, with imprisonment – even death – the penalty
for those who refused to turn to Catholicism. Unless they were protected
by noble status, women who rejected the religion du roi were
whipped, and their faces branded with the fleur de lis. Men were broken
at the wheel: each bone in their body systematically smashed by the
executioner.
To ensure that there could be no escape, Louis declared it
illegal to seek sanctuary from his religious tyranny abroad.

Shalom,
Shoiel

P.s If you don't know about THE WHEEL, don't look it up if you are
squeemish.

I thought branding a woman with a Fleur-de-lys was a sign of a prostitute?

Stefan

Well said! Wasnt the brand for a criminal under sentence of death in
France the Fleur de Lys? Only the French would show such patriotism in
their death sentence victims :)

Greetings:

For those of you unable to attend you missed a great time. Saturday
started out being a little on the cool side and the ground was wet but not
slippery or muddy. Since there was a delay we started off with Maestro
Damiano fighting his Prize. ( I will let each MOB tell about his Prize
fights). So we all had a very good warm up before the tournament. There
were a total of 15 fighters that showed up at the event with their gear
but only 13 fought in the actual tournament. We did a standard double
elimination, best two out of three tournament where double kills were both
counted and bye fights advanced automatically to the next round. The
victor of the tournament was Lord Leon Geronimo de Saurez ( I hope I got
the full name right). This tournament was also held to select the new Grey
Niche Baronial Champion. The Baron decided beforehand that the Grey Niche
member that finished the highest would receive that honor and that turned
out to be Maestro Damiano. Obviously we didn't tire him enough during his
Prize fights. ;-) After the tournament we did pickup fights until about
2:30 - 3 PM when Master Erik of Telemark fought his Prize. Everyone was
tired but happy by the end of the day. There was also a challenge for the
GA Iron Ring and Lord Frederick managed to maintain possession of the
ring.

I would like to thank those that made the trek to our event to help make
it a success.

In service
Mistress Alysia

So far the consensus is that it will be fine to do pick up fights AFTER
the tournament is over. I only have to get one more person's permission,
HSH Stephen and we should be good to go. But I will have to warn everyone
that the tournament could be a all day thing. I know for a fact that each
bout will be a best two out of three fights and they are not running
multiple fields.

Sounds good-lemme know so I know how to pack, and who

Yes, I saw them. While the original Super-8 movies aren't online as far as
I know, you *can* see some photographs of the First Tourney at the West
Kingdom's history page:

                  Ansteorra
Ancient, but not quite *that* ancient.

Its amazing the evolution of the SCA from a MAY DAY party where dress-up in
costumes and fighting with broom sticks and fencing masks to what it is
today.

I've seen a lot of changes. The bigest was the institution of fees for
non-members. Anstaeorra almost broke off from the SCA. (They even went as
far as incorporating the kingdom on its own.) My most unexpected change was
rapier in Meridies.

From 1960's college students running the SCA to LAWYERS who run it now.

When I joined in '82, some FREON can helms were still legal (grandfather'ed
in), hand protection was not required. For those of us who fight, it is un
imaginable to go on the field without hand protection.

All on all, the SCA has been fun and frustrating all at the same time. No
matter what you do, once you have played for a while it is difficult to
avoid the politics. That said, it is also a great place to make friends.

Ply me with some Beer and maybe I will tell stories . . .

Shalom,
Shoiel

P.S. Erik has been in longer than I have, and Irene has played a while too.

YUP! Thanks to Berkley California.

Anyone seen the original footage from the party that started it all? I saw
it at TYC (Twenty Year).
