There's an article about Internet tennis-fans in the November 2003
issue of _ace_ (British tennis-magazine). Here is what it says about
Monica:
>>>
According to our internet-based research, no tennis player, male or
female, has a bigger fan base than Monica Seles. She may have had an
injury-plagued year, but the loyal "Selesians" are still there for
her "in grunts and giggles", as one fan puts it.
Seles emerges as the clear favourite, with almost twice as big a fan
base as Serena Williams, who came third. There were just two points
between Henin-Hardenne and Capriati, but Henin-Hardenne's victory
over her fellow-Belgian Kim Clijsters was as decisive as their
encounter in the US Open.
Most fan sites are a familiar combination of biography, statistics
and photographs, but check out
http://www.ualberta.ca/~hsettle/LINKS.HTM for some of the most
unusual pictures of Monica.
<<<
That's the first time I've ever seen the word "Selesians" (a word I
coined myself in April 1998) in the printed media! :-)
_ace_ has published a chart of Internet-mentions, which Monica topped
with nearly 20000 mentions (Martina Hingis is second with just over
16000). "We looked for references to players' fan sites and links to
sites and the results are indicative of not just the number of fan
sites for each player, but also fan activity."
Monica comes 7th on their adoration index (the number of times
someone said they "loved" a player, based on Google searches). "She
has the most fans but perhaps they only want to be good friends? 98
on the kissometer".
(The list of Internet-mentions and the adoration index include male
and female players who have been ranked in the top ten in the last
two years.)
Monica deserves her popularity because she is the most brilliant
player in tennis-history, the nicest person in the world, and has
overcome more adversity in her life than any other tennis-player. The
first two points are my personal opinion, but the third point is
indisputable.
