Shanghai was a highly impressive tournament for two Selesians!
1r: María Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo d. Nicole Pratt, 6-4 6-3
1r: Akiko Morigami d. Martina Suchá, 6-2 6-3
2r: María Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo lost to Maria Sharapova, 6-4 3-6 4-6
2r: Akiko Morigami d. CONCHITA MARTÍNEZ (4), 7-5 6-0
qf: Akiko Morigami d. ALICIA MOLIK (6), 7-6(3) 7-5
sf: Akiko Morigami lost to CHANDA RUBIN (2), 0-6 7-5 3-6
Just as Jelena Dokic had beaten another Jelena [Jankovic] in the
first round, my two Marias faced each other in the second round! But
as I am a full fan of Maria Sharapova and only a demi-fan of María
Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo, I was pleased that Sharapova won, and that
Sánchez Lorenzo got a set.
I find it ironic that María Antonia is ranked one place higher than
Monica in this last week's rankings (Monica has slipped to #46, María
Antonia is at #45).
It sure is strange to see Monica ranked so low (after the Stabbing
she fell to #18 before she was removed from the rankings in February
1994 due to playing fewer than three tournaments in 52 weeks), but as
I understand the system she should get an injury-protected ranking of
#18 when she comes back, because she was ranked #18 the week after
the French Open.
I have updated the Photos section as follows:
* Monica Seles (+1 photo)
* Women > Akiko Morigami (+3)
* Women > Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo (+1)
