The stress-fracture in her left foot will keep Monica off the tour
for the rest of 2003 (according to reports on CEEFAX and Teletext).
She will need at least two and a half months to recover. She still
cannot run.
Monica has not played since the French Open, but she assures us that
she has no plans to retire yet.
"I don't want to go out this way. Playing the Australian Open is my
goal, but if that doesn't work out, I'll probably return in Miami
[mid-March]".
So I'm really looking forward to 2004. It would mean a lot to me for
Monica to be still playing at 30 (as she will become on 2nd December
2003).
I should very much like to put 2003 behind me because, although I did
get my PhD, it has been an annus horribilis for the players I
support. I find it ironic that Monica and Iva Majoli have been ruled
out for the rest of 2003 due to injury, when Daniela Hantuchová and
Jelena Dokic ought to take the rest of 2003 off by choice because
they have overplayed themselves into deep slumps.
