Here's the report of Super Marion's match that I wrote for
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/danielahantuchova/ :
>>>>>>
I wouldn't say Daniela's problems are behind her, but she certainly
put them aside for the time being with a 6-3 6-2 win over Marion
Bartoli in the first round on Monday - same opponent, same round, and
same number of games as at Wimbledon! :-)

Daniela out-aced Marion 5 to 1, and out-winnered her 37 to 8. Another
key difference was that Daniela won 73% of points when she got her
first serve in, compared with just 47% for Marion. Daniela broke
Marion's serve six times from ten break-points, and Marion broke
Daniela twice from two break-points.

Hantuchová Blasts Bartoli
by Brad Falkner
Monday, August 25, 2003

This summer Daniela Hantuchová has developed a new habit. It involves
beating Marion Bartoli in the first round of Grand Slam tournaments.

Ninth-seeded Hantuchová needed just more than an hour to advance to
the second round of the US Open with a very convincing 6-3, 6-2
victory over the unseeded Bartoli.

The pair last met in the first round of Wimbledon, where Hantuchová
prevailed 6-4, 6-1.

Hantuchová, a quarterfinalist at last year's US Open, out blasted and
outlasted the quirky French woman.

Bartoli's groundstrokes and serves lacked their usual depth and pace,
easily allowing Hantuchová to take the offensive. Hantuchová took
control of the match early on breaking Bartoli's serve three times in
the first set. Hantuchová's groundstrokes were crisp and precise off
both wings, producing 37 winners over the two set contest.

I also recommend Bruce Johnson's report of this match:

I don't post very much at all but it is now 1:45 AM and just returned
from the
day session.
I live over 4 hours away.
I was in the 2nd row just inside the baseline behind Dani's chair so
had a good perspective.
My summary of the match follows:
She looked extremely nervous when she came on the court. Very
concerned look on her face. Lost 3 of the first 4 points with some
nervous shots, but steadied very quickly.
Her serving had good location with a few aces, with speed usually 92
to 100 MPH on the first serve. Her ground strokes looked better and
the forehand wasn't as wild or streaky as it has been. When she did
miss it was by a small amout with a couple of exceptions. The off
forehand down the line was crisp on several occasions reminding me of
Indian Wells 2 years ago, and her backhand was clean crosscourt and
and down the line.
She did question several line calls, some of which I believe did go
against her, but she shook them off pretty well.

She had on a powder blue dress type of outfit that was made of
light 'silky' material, and was very attractive and feminine.
She looked better than in the recent past physically, and didn't
break much of a sweat on what was a hot court in the middle of the
afternoon with temps about 85 degrees.
To be fair Bartoli, looked tired, and seemed out of shape as she was
sucking air by the 10 th game.

Sorry for the redundancy for those that saw match on TV, but was not
sure that USA carried to US viewers as there were several good
matches going on at that time.

Shot 2 rolls with a 75mm to 300 IS Canon lens in very high light so
am hoping for some good pics that I will post on the net in 1 or more
places.

It's so cute that Daniela came out nervous and then won
brilliantly! :-)

And here's a report from http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sanchez2/ :

What a great pleasure it was to watch Maria win her first round match
yesterday! I have noticed her success this year, and her game was
good enough to win yesterday. She stayed tough, and won the first
set tiebreak 12-10.

She seems like she's more fit this year; Looked slimmer and was
covering ground better. Her serving was inconsistent, and
suprisingly, her ground strokes were not quite as crisp as I
remember. I hope she brings it up a notch against Serna tomorrow. I
know she can do it, she beat her earlier in the year (on clay).

I don't know how many of her long time fans are still around, but if
she continues like she's been doing this year, she'll convert many
new fans!

Overall a great day at the Open. Watched all the way thru the
Kuerten match....a 5th set tiebreak!!

Have a great day,

Buck
