WOMEN'S SINGLES
FIRST ROUND
+ Akiko Morigami beat TAMARINE TANASUGARN (26), 6-4 6-3
- María Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo lost to SILVIA FARINA ELIA (27), 4-6
2-6
- Marion Bartoli lost to DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ (9), 4-6 1-6
Here is the report I've written as a Daniela fan:
Daniela came through a mouthwatering match with Selesian player (two
hands both sides) Marion Bartoli, recovering from 2-4 down in the
first set to win 6-4 6-1. This was Daniela at her flairsome best,
hitting winners at will particularly on the forehand (she finished
with 36 winners, compared with eight by Marion) and hitting her
groundstrokes with smooth, effortless power.
The match was played on Court 2 ("Graveyard of Champions"), starting
at 18:10 BST. I followed game-by-game updates on CEEFAX for the first
set.
Marion held for 1-0, and broke Daniela for 2-0. Daniela - like all
great champions - broke back immediately, and held for 2-2. The
pattern repeated itself, with Marion breaking for 4-2, only for
Daniela to break back and hold for 4-4. Then Daniela went on a great
tear, breaking for 5-4 and serving out the first set 6-4 at 18:50.
The BBC joined the match in the first game of the second set, with
Daniela having break-point at advantage. Marion double-faulted to
give Daniela a 1-0 lead. Daniela then held to love in impressive
style, with a crosscourt forehand-winner, a crosscourt backhand-
winner and a service-winner. 2-0.
Marion stopped Daniela from extending her run to seven games in a row
when she held for 1-2 after a marathon game of seven deuces and three
break-points saved. Daniela hit an off-forehand return-winner, two of
her trademark down-the-line backhand-winners, a forehand pass-winner,
a mishit backhand dropshot return-winner, and a sweeping crosscourt
backhand-winner. She also committed several errors, including a very
wild long forehand, but that's acceptable for someone of Daniela's
healthy audacity. Marion had her winners too: an ace down the middle,
a two-handed forehand drive-volley winner down the line, and a
netcord-winner.
Pam Shriver said Daniela's weight-loss meant that she couldn't stand
up to hard shots against her. I'm not sure I agree with this. She
also complimented Daniela on her dress, which had a diagonal hemline
that was longer on her right leg, rather than her left leg being
longer! ;-)
Daniela held to 30 for 3-1 with a netcord-winner, a service-winner
and a down-the-line backhand-winner. It was that tricky time of day
when the court was half in shadow. Marion stands quite far in to
receive serve.
Daniela broke Marion's serve after one deuce, with three down-the-
line forehand-winners, a spectacular crosscourt-forehand return-
winner, finishing with a forehand-winner down the line for 4-1 after
a two-punch spreading rally. However, Marion did save two break-
points at 15/40, one with a service-winner. Daniela only converted
6/18 break-points in this match. Marion is a good hustler, like most
Selesians (they have to be because of their restricted reach).
Daniela was in full flight now, with all her shots working. She held
to love with a forehand volley-winner, a service-winner, a superb
running crosscourt-backhand pass-winner and a forehand-winner down
the line to take a 5-1 lead. "Full of confidence, full of ability
right now" [David Mercer].
Marion thus served to stay in the match at 1-5. She hit an error-
forcing two-handed forehand down the line. 15/0. Daniela hit a
backhand return-winner down the line. 15/15. Service-winner. 30/15.
Daniela hit a crosscourt forehand-winner. 30/30. Marion hit a
forehand wide. 30/40 (match-point). Marion hit a backhand wide.
Daniela won the match 6-4 6-1 at 19:23.
SECOND ROUND
+ Akiko Morigami beat Karolina Sprem, 6-3 6-3
THIRD ROUND
- Akiko Morigami lost to JENNIFER CAPRIATI (8), 4-6 4-6
I saw this match on TV - it was my first time to see Akiko play - but
frankly I found the match rather boring. Akiko takes the ball early
and moves well, but is not at all hard-hitting.
MEN'S SINGLES
FIRST ROUND
+ Jan-Michael Gambill beat Igor Kunitsyn (LL), 6-3 6-2 6-4
+ Fabrice Santoro beat Andreas Vinciguerra, 4-6 6-3 2-6 6-2 6-2
+ Raemon Sluiter beat YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV (20), 7-5 3-6 2-6 6-2 6-3
I saw most of Raemon's match on TV, but unfortunately the BBC stopped
showing it early in the fifth set, when their transmission finished
at 20:30 on Tuesday. It was another great performance from Raemon (he
had taken Lleyton Hewitt to a final-set tiebreak at Queens), very
cerebral and with early hitting. I wish I could say more, but the
memory is too distant now. ;-(

- Raemon Sluiter lost to Alexander Popp, 6-7 (4/7) 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7/5)
2-6
