This was a good week for Selesians, as María Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo
and Marion Bartoli both did well in their respective home-countries,
in Madrid and Strasbourg.
María Antonia turned in a very impressive performance to almost win
Madrid, where she was a wild card:
1r + Nicole Pratt, 6-3 4-6 6-4
2r + MAGÜI SERNA (6), 6-3 6-2
qf + Emmanuelle Gagliardi (Q), 6-1 3-6 6-4
sf + Barbara Schett, 6-1 6-3
f - CHANDA RUBIN (1), 4-6 7-5 4-6
This was María Antonia's second-ever final on the WTA Tour, after she
won her only title at Knokke-Heist in 1999. María Antonia is ranked
84th to Rubin's 8th, but put up a great performance, breaking serve
in the last game of the second set to take it 7-5. Rubin scored the
crucial break at 4-4 in the third, and won in 2h16m.
It's interesting that this year's Madrid final was Rubin versus a
Selesian, whereas last year's was Rubin versus Monica herself! Madrid
is Monica's latest title.
Marion Bartoli also had a good week, reaching the quarter-finals at
Strasbourg:
1r + Céline Beigbeder (WC), 7-6 (7-3) 6-1
2r + Lina Krasnoroutskaya, 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 7-5
qf - VERA ZVONAREVA (6), 1-6 2-6
Congratulations too to Sonya Jeyaseelan, who won the doubles at
Strasbourg with Maja Matevzic without dropping a set:
1r + Joannette Kruger/Martina Müller, 6-4 6-3
qf + ELENA LIKHOVTSEVA/ANASTASIA MYSKINA (4), 6-3 7-5
sf + Lisa McShea/Irina Selyutina, 6-4 6-1
f + Laura Granville/Jelena Kostanic, 6-4 6-4
