Today of course is the tenth anniversary of the Stabbing. Enough said
about that.
But it is also the fourteenth anniversary of Monica winning her first-
ever WTA Tour title, the Virginia Slims of Houston, where a 15-year-
old Monica - playing only her second tournament as a pro - beat Chris
Evert 3-6 6-1 6-4 in the final on 30th April 1989 (as shown on the
photo of Monica holding a giant cheque in her autobiography, Monica:
From Fear to Victory).
Believe it or not, 30th April is also the anniversary of the
crucifixion of Jesus Christ in AD 30, and - from the most Good to
arguably the most evil man who ever lived - it was on 30th April 1945
that Adolf Hitler committed suicide.
BTW, I was thrilled to learn that the Hamburg tournament is no longer
being played as of this year. It should have been cancelled ten years
ago, when they just continued playing as though Monica had retired of
a regular injury.
