Sadly, Monica had to withdraw from Charleston - as well as from
Indian Wells and Miami - due to the stress-fracture in her left foot.

"I had hoped my foot would be fully recovered in time for the Family
Circle Cup but am sorry to say it still does not feel 100 percent."

I sincerely hope this won't turn out to be another five-month
absence, like September 1999 - February 2000, and March-July 2001.


Also, Serena Williams praised Marion Bartoli at Miami: "I've seen her
play before, and she's a tough cookie. She never gives up."

Unfortunately Marion lost 6-3 2-6 6-4 to Tathiana Garbin in the first
round at Charleston. Garbin also beat MONICA at Indian Wells 2001.

Charleston still has plenty of fanship-interest for me, though, as
Iva Majoli is defending the title, and I also have Daniela
Hantuchová, Jelena Dokic and Iroda Tulyaganova in the draw! :-)
