Petrova was the form-favourite going into the French Open, but she
was hobbled by an injured muscle in her left leg (sustained during
practice). Akiko "strung her around the court and showed very quick
hands." [www.rolandgarros.com]
Akiko: "I was really shocked when I finished my match. I could not
think about anything else. I know Nadia was injured, but I tried to
focus on my game. I think it worked pretty well."

- Fabrice Santoro lt. JOSÉ ACASUSO [26], 6-3 6-1 3-6 1-6 11-9
Santoro v Acasuso was suspended at *2-4 in the fifth set on Sunday
evening. When it resumed on Monday, they showed it on BBCi!
It was played on Court Chatrier, in windy conditions.
Fabrice is an unorthodox and deeply talented player. He has a
regular two-handed backhand, and "sees the possibilities much
earlier than his opponents", as Sam Smith said after he hit an off-
backhand winner.
His forehand is the weirdest in tennis: two-handed, but it almost
crosses the penumbra of the Dark Side as he chops down on it to
impart slice.
Fabrice also has good volleys; we saw some chip-and-charge against
Acasuso's serve, and serve-and-volley at critical times.
And we saw a great dropshot, and an amazing backhand lob-winner with
Acasuso serving at 6-7 (40/15).
Acasuso is a tall man: 6'3" to Fabrice's 5'10". He is one-handed on
both sides, and hits all his groundstrokes with topspin - no variety
there. He is a powerful, but played cautiously.
Acasuso first served for the match at 5-4, but Fabrice broke to 15
when Acasuso, with the sun in his eyes, double-faulted.
But Acasuso has a big serve, and held serve easily in all the other
games I saw.
Serving at 8-8, Fabrice saved 0/30 and 30/40, and held with an
incredible point ending with a crosscourt forehand volley-winner
(Acasuso should have smashed a lob, but let it drop and Fabrice took
the initiative).
But at 9-9, Fabrice was broken after a horrible netted volley at
0/15. He recovered from 15/30 with a second-serve ace down the
middle, and saved two break-points at 30/40 and Ad Acasuso, but a
big forehand return from Acasuso sealed the break.
Acasuso serving for the match at 10-9:
* {0/0} Acasuso hit a horrible smash wide.
* {0/15} Fabrice retrieved a smash from behind his back, but Acasuso
hit a volley-winner.
* {15/15} Service-winner.
* {30/15} Fabrice netted a forehand.
* {40/15: MP #1} Fabrice saved it with a backhand pass-winner.
* {40/30: MP #2} Fabrice netted a forehand with Acasuso at the net.
