After playing so magnificently to win Auckland, could Marion upset
US Open champion Kim Clijsters in the third round, assuming that
Clijsters recovers sufficiently from her hip-injury to play?
Shuai beat Clijsters 6-4 6-4 at San Diego 2005 - the only player to
beat Clijsters on a hard court before the WTA Tour Championships
IIRC. She could play Maria Sharapova, who is struggling with a
shoulder-injury/dislocated rib, in the second round.
I believe Shuai is capable of closing out a win over Maria (as
opposed to Maria retiring), but Maria beat Shuai 6-2 6-1 in their
only meeting so far (Berlin 2005), and Shuai's year started with a
6-2 6-4 loss to Ana Ivanovic in 1r Sydney.
Adriana Serra Zanetti is missing the Australian Open with a foot-
injury. She hasn't played since October 2005.
