The Canberra Women's Classic was a good tournament for Selesians, with
Adriana Serra-Zanetti beating Gold Coast runner-up Marie-Gaïané
Mikaelian 7-5 6-4 in the first round. She then beat Saori Obata 6-4
6-1 to reach the quarter-finals, where she lost 6-4 6-2 to Emilie Loit.
But the real star of the tournament was Marion Bartoli. She beat
Meilen Tu 6-2 6-2, seventh seed Laura Granville 7-5 4-6 6-4, and
Marlene Weingärtner 6-4 6-4 to reach the semi-finals! There she lost
6-4 3-6 6-3 to fifth seed Francesca Schiavone.
And if that wasn't impressive enough, Marion had qualified for
Canberra, beating Marie-Eve Pelletier 6-3 6-4, Maria Goloviznina 6-1
6-1, and Marlene Weingärtner 6-2 6-2! I guess Weingärtner must have
got into the draw as a lucky loser, unless there are two Weingärtners! ;-)
