'HISTORY OF MARTIAL ARTS IN HAWAII'
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/historyofmartialartsinhawaii/
Here you can enjoy learning about the rich martial arts culture and history of
Hawai`i by reading the captions of each photo in our Photos section.
Every pic has captions telling about it and the RICH culture and history of
martial arts in Hawaii. There is something for everyone...BOXING, WRESTLING,
JUDO, JIU-JITSU, AIKIDO, KENPO, KARATE, GUNG FU, KALI/ESCRIMA/ARNIS, KAJUKENBO,
LUA, SUMO...
Being made up of mostly an Asian culture, Hawai`i was a
hotbed/melting-pot of 'Eastern' philosophical ideas and teachings.
Hawaii's largest Asian communities being Chinese, Japanese,
Okinawan and Filipino, is why you'll find mostly a mixture of
fighting styles from these cultures.
These have all blended together into what some locals have
affectionately termed as a "chop suey" culture.
It was men like Seishiro "Henry" Okazaki,Hawaiian-born James Masayoshi Mitose &
William K.S.Chow that first taught the Asian arts to foreigners.
These three men could really be considered the 'FATHERS' of
Hawaiian/American martial arts!
It was then their students that took what they had learned and introduced it to
the rest of America when they left Hawaii and came to the mainland...
...men like Ed Parker,Wally Jay,Al Dacascos,Samuel Alama Kuoha,James Muro,and so
many others.
If you've ever been a student of KENPO/KEMPO or JUDO/JU-JUTSU(and their many
off-shoots), then you should be thankful for the efforts of these early, martial
art's pioneers of Hawai`i.
Any comments and contributions are very welcome!

He didnt even have ONE point scored against him in that event! He had to

Next, he was invited to compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship(UFC),
after having only one pro fight!
He has fought in the UFC 3 times last year and has stopped every opponent in
the first round!
His 2nd opponent, Din Thomes, was TOP TEN ranked and had already beaten the UFC

BJ knocked him out in ELEVEN SECONDS FLAT!
And, I mean OUT!
In his most recent performance he just beat the #2 Lightweight in the world,

Hi Matthew, Thanks for your reply. Sorry I was not clear in my
letter, I was just looking for someone who is experinced in Kenpo so
I could relay a realistic veiw into my book. If you yourself or

Jason,
When I was practicing. We had several people in wheel
chairs. I don't know the severity of your limitations
or not. The sensei that taught me he didn't bring in
the spiritual side of it.

Hello my name is Jason and I am new to the group. I am facinated
about this style Kenpo and recently read a few books. I am doing
research for a Christian novel and one of my characters is a kenpo
student. I am not a martial artist because I am disabled with MD
but I was told that I have a black belt mind. I am developing a
character who is a Christian who has above average kenpo skills. If
there is someone out there who would like to help please feel free
to email me. --Jason
Hey all,

hello all. I'll be brief. First, I am a martial artist....lets get
that outta the way. Second, I"'m starting a new club. Some of you
may find it wrong or offensive, other may look at it as a door to
something to further explore your faith and abilities. Either way,
the choice is yours. It is a site geared towards occult (and when I
say "occult" I mean it in the "unknown" or "obscure" sense, not
nescesarily evil) findings and discusion. This is a secular site,
but that doesn't mean that Christians can't have input or fun.
Anyway, check it out and feel free to comment and add your own
flavor. So, anyway, check it out. Its still new (like a day), but I
think it may be alot of fun. Just please bring an open mind and
respect for others. This is not a Christian site, and heads may
butt, but I think ya'll can handle that. Ok, hope to see you there

I think that is wonderful. I have not received my blackbelt yet I
hope to do so in the spring. I would like to something similar. Is
there anything I should be on the look for that would be challenging?
John
Hey all wassup? I would like to inform the group that I practice
kenpo-shotokan under a christian sensei. Our dojo is a christian
ministry at our church. Please let me know what you think.
Where is everone? How come no one post here? I
would enjoy fellowship with some practicing believers.
Anyone having a hard time training? The hard thing for
me is space, and time. With Our Lord Jesus' help
though, I'll make it. Anyone concur, disagree? Am I
talking to shadows?
Hello, I'am very intrested in more info regarding
karate for Christ. I tried to find a statement of faith
to no avail. Do you know if the organization
presents one? Any help you could give me would be greatly
appreciated... God Bless
Idskenpo, Welcome back home. Have you been
reading your bible? There are some good bible helps out
there, but like food. There are alot of good treats
available, that are'nt out and out bad for us. We still need
a steady diet of solid meats, grains, etc.. With out
which we will eventually slow down, bog down, and could
possibly die. So be careful that what ever you accept is
examined carefully in the light of," The Living God's,"
Word. How is your physical training going? I hope
things are going well for you on all fronts. Stay in
prayer, stay in God's Word. May our Lord Jesus Christ,
and God our Father bless, and keep you. B.H.G. Donald
Friend, I thought your answer was insightful, and
on target. I look forward to sharing with fellow
believers on this site. Please pray for me, my wife, and
our children. Our needs are many, but especially for
my wife's salvation(very backslidden), and return to
our home. She has been out of our lives, and on the
street. For over a year now. We have'nt seen or heard
from her. Since February of this year. We do have our
church praying for her, and us. All praying believers on
this site are asked, and welcome to pray for her. Her
name is Evie. Thank You,B.H.G. Donald
Hello all,

I am new to this forum as of
this last week. I am very happy to come across a group
of dedicated Christians who are martial artists! I
look very much forward to discussing training and
teaching philosophies with you all.

With that in
mind, I spent the weekend going through all of the
listed postings. In them many of you related teaching
your art with a Christ centered approach. A few even
mentioned that they have a christian curriculum with
scripture and such being used.

Would anyone be
willing to send me their materials (via email) that they
are using/ have used?

I am getting ready to
start an outreach program in an inner city environment
and thus am in need of a good bible based program to
integrate with the art I teach. I am willing to create it
myself, however, I would appreciate detailed ideas so
that I don't have to re-invent the wheel!

It
also appears that not very many people are posting to
this anymore...who is still around? What arts do you
all practice?

Looking forward to
fellowship...

John
Hello all,
I have recently returned to Christ
after a time spent studying neo-paganism.I was raised a
Southern Baptist and now have become a member of The
Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints and am trying
to reconcile my interests and experiences with the
Martial Arts with Christianity. I have studied various
Arts since the age of 10 (27 now). And I joined this
club in hopes of finding tidbits of help.

All

I just received an email that the Left Behind

students.like myagi said in the movie karate kid"never bad
student just bad teachers".
You mentioned that you study kenpo, and you
mentioned the name ed parker. I was wondering if you have
heard of a style called shou shu or the name of Al
