Well, aside
from her age she sounds like one of us, just a little to one side of the “norm”.

question for instructors
Now comes Diane,
with this question:
(If somebody's already replied to this, my apologies.)

Hi - I am interested in exploring Aikido instruction for my daughter,
Gwen, who is 13 yrs old. Your center is very close to our home and
would be very convenient.
She has a variety of high functioning autism (Asperger's) but without
the shyness. This means she has hyperactivity, some discoordination,
inability to read social cues, and difficulty in learning social skills.
However, she is very cheerful, enthusiastic, bright, physically strong, and
loves other kids. She took a class in TaeKwonDo through her school
recently and loved it. The physical component as well as the structure
fit her beautifully. It's one of the few times I saw her
"behave" socially. She followed directions (she loves rules
especially when not her parent's rules), was courteous and listened very
well.
The only problem she had was "attending" for more than 45-60
minutes. After too long she started talking out of turn and horsing
around a little. I stayed throughout these TaeKwonDo classes as support
and would do the same with your classes until Gwen is able to "solo".
I personally prefer the peaceful and noncompetitive philosophy of
Aikido and she is interested as well.
I am interested to learn if you think she would fit with your
program. It might be easier to talk by phone if you wish. It is
best to call me any time except not on Mondays and Thursdays when I work.
Thank you for your time and attention. Look forward to hearing
from you.
