Looks like we'll be given 30 free tickets. Everyone needs to decide what to do with them. They will be at will call. They are meant for the players but since most have already brought tickets they can maybe be used for other things.
The game will be only 4-5 minutes max.
Stanford need to bring their jerseys so we can play in alternative strips....
Subject: [seahawkyouth] Second U10 half-time practice: Sunday May 17, 11-1
We had a good turnout on Sunday for the first practice for the USA-Ireland U10 half time game: 15 boys and girls, and half a dozen coaches and adult helpers. The kids were able to learn some new skills as well as dust off some of their old ones.
The next practice will be on Sunday May 17, 11am to 1pm at Cupertino MIddle School. We're starting an hour earlier than normal, since about half the player who showed up last Sunday would otherwise have on conflict with a fundraiser in the afternoon.
Chris and the rest of the coaches are still trying to finalize the size and number of teams: we'd really like everyone to have a chance to play, and we're open to having large sides or two different games if numbers permit.
So any U10 player, either from the Silicon Valley or Peninsula Seahawks, is warmly welcome to attend the next practice session. Hope to see you there

Dear Seahawk Youth Rugby parents,
As some of you may already know, Chris Fisher has arranged for there to be a U10 demonstration game at half time at the USA-Ireland match in Santa Clara on Sunday May 31st.
Starting this Sunday, 12-2pm at Cupertino Middle School, we will be holding practice sessions to get two teams ready for the day. Since both time and numbers for the game are limited, we cannot guarantee that everyone will actually get a chance to play on the day. But anyone who wants can at least be down on the field as part of the team on the "reserve bench." And hopefully just having a few more rugby practices will be fun for everyone in any case.
If you want your child to be involved in this, your commitments are
(a) to buy tickets for the USA-Ireland game for yourself and your kids
(b) to let me and/or Chris know that you will be taking part
(c) to show up to the preparation practices (I know: the first one is on Mothers Day, and some may have other commitments; let us know if you can't make it to this one but are still interested)

Due to prior engagements, Tay will not be at practice on Sunday, May 10.

John et al (except Paul per his request – can someone
please get this to Paul via an alternate email)
My belated apologies for missing the meeting at Steve’s.
I agree with all the points you (John) make. The size/skill
issue is more of a problem with the younger age groups than it is with the
older ones with kids hitting their growth spurts at different times. We’re
going to have to be prepared to deal with it. I’ve experienced the issue
first hand with my son who at 8 years and 70lbs was high tackled by one of the
bigger kids (over 110lbs) who was only 9 or 10 – the result was a broken
shoulder and collar bone. Having said this, I still would not change a thing
about the system. I think it comes down to common sense and the need to focus
on playing the game properly and cleanly. That puts the responsibility on coaches
and the refs to make sure that the safety aspects are being given the right priority
in both practices and games. If we stick by this position we need to agree on
how we’re going to deal with the invariable situation of a “concerned”
parent on the sidelines expressing “aggressive” concern as to why
that “big kid” is playing against their smaller child.
Some Suggested Revisions to document:
-Mission Statement: (Additions/Revisions are underlined)
oDevelop,
promote and administer the Game of Rugby Union amongst youth within the
Boundary territory with emphasis placed on Enjoyment, Participation[DU1],
Fitness, Fair Play, Sportsmanship, Camaraderie, Knowledge
and Respect for the Traditions of the Game of Rugby. (Yes this could still
use some cleaning up)
oWhile competition and
winning are fine, I think the greater purpose of the club should be focused on
teaching/inspiring a love for the game along with increasing the profile/visibility
for the sport overall. If we are successful in this regard, I believe “winning”
will follow. While “Safety” is a nice thing to say, let’s be
honest, this is a contact sport and there will be injuries – I think this
gets covered off under Fair Play and Sportsmanship.
oThere
is an excellent website (see link) that I think has a great deal of material we
can leverage and learn from. I think the “Code of Conduct” section
is especially interesting and could easily be adapted with some modifications
to our club.
-Board Structure and Voting
oThere
needs to be an odd number of people on the board to avoid tie votes. On other
boards I’ve served on, this can be accomplished in one of two ways.
Either all positions vote, or the President/Chair is the odd man with a
non-voting status who is only called upon to make break a tie
oIn
terms of positions, there are downsides to having to few people on the board,
these include issues with representation and most significantly –
workload. There’s a lot of work involved in setting up initial charters
for new clubs. Voting positions can be addressed as a matter of administration
as the club evolves, however, I’d use this opportunity to try and take
as much advantage of all the “goodwill” we have.
oMy
suggestions for voting positions are as follows (with comments added where
appropriate)
§President/Chair
(Make this a non-voting/tie breaking only position – no change to
responsibilities)
§Secretary
§Finance
Director
§Registration/Membership
Director (this is a huge job and not to be underestimated. In some clubs I
have seen this become two positions – only one votes though. This role
needs to have direct input into the board)
§Field
Coordinator/Director
§Referee
Coordinator/Director (Needs to be a mechanism for direct referee input to the
board and the decision making)
§Recruitment
Director (This is another one of the roles that quickly scales to more than one
person. Success here will be dependent upon the ability to recruit additional
sub-volunteers – mostly parents – to help execute plans)
§Coaching
Director – This role will be required to make sure we have consistency in
coaching standards for the club. This person is responsible for background
checks.
§Program
and Team Selection Director – would add Tournament Planning and Player
Development to the responsibilities
§(NEW)
Fund Raising – responsible for developing and leading fund raising events
for the club. Boards can make decisions on priorities. This could be combined
with the Social Director role that John suggested either directly or an oversight/coordinating
position.
§(NEW)
Parent Ombudsman – The is an elected position to represent parents on the
board. It is a key role in establishing an tone of transparency in any NPO.
oThe
is a 10 + 1 board structure
oRoberts
Rules of Order would apply.
oWill
need to make sure we have term limits and conflict of interest provisions
addressed.
-Boundary
oCommunity
focused NPO’s typically get more favourable consideration when it comes
to getting access to fields/pitches. We may want to consider making some more explicit
statements about the communities we serve (or not). This can also be addressed
at a later date in the Club Constitution.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I have a
concern with the weight limitations, both from a practical and a philosophical
standpoint. On the latter, if we construct strict weight guidelines, we
inevitably put ourselves on the path of having to do weigh-ins as pop warner
does – I think the whole pop warner system of requiring birth
certificates and weigh-ins before every game and all that makes distrust the
focal point, and I think it adds to the overall atmosphere of lousy sportsmanship
that pervades that whole organization (if you’ve heard what some of those
coaches yell at their kids and refs, you know what I mean). Part of our
job as coaches is to pass along rugby’s great traditions, and among the
best of those, in my view, is the sportsmanship and camaraderie that cuts
across team boundaries. I think creating an environment where we require
the opposing coach to prove that his players are qualified under the
regulations before each game sets a tone that is not at all sportsmanlike.
So that’s my soap box speech.
From a
practical standpoint, enforcing strict guidelines would require a weigh in of
each player before each game (get your players there 30 minutes earlier, and
then have them stand around during the weigh ins), and you also put some kids
in a position where they have to diet to make weight each week, which I
don’t think is particularly healthy for adolescents. Last, the idea
of moving a kid up based on weight doesn’t really do anything to advance
safety – my son is 12, weighs 130, but the idea of him having to move up
and play against 15 and 16 year olds makes no sense. I think it’s
safer to have more leeway in size and keep the kids grouped by age, which is a
good proxy for experience and skill level – far better to have kids
playing against peers experience-wise than to have a young kid playing against
older, more experienced, more physically mature kids who happen to weigh the
same.

[seahawkyouth] Half time game at USA/Ireland
match
Dear Seahawk Youth Rugby parents,
As some of you may already know, Chris Fisher has arranged for there to
be a U10 demonstration game at half time at the USA-Ireland match in Santa
Clara on Sunday May 31st.
Starting this Sunday, 12-2pm at Cupertino Middle School, we will be holding
practice sessions to get two teams ready for the day. Since both
time and numbers for the game are limited, we cannot guarantee that everyone
will actually get a chance to play on the day. But anyone who wants can
at least be down on the field as part of the team on the "reserve
bench." And hopefully just having a few more rugby practices will
be fun for everyone in any case.
If you want your child to be involved in this, your commitments are
(a) to buy tickets for the USA-Ireland game for yourself and your kids
(b) to let me and/or Chris know that you will be taking part
(c) to show up to the preparation practices (I know: the first one is on
Mothers Day, and some may have other commitments; let us know if you can't
make it to this one but are still interested)

FYI for those coming. I live on the corner of Theresa Lane and Via Carmen
avenue. I'll hang my New Zealand flag out front to help you recognize my
house (that's a union jack in the corner a blue ensign and four red stars
J).
Depending on numbers we will probably sit out the back, I have tables I'll
put together, its cozy enough but it may get a little chilly latter so do
bring a jersey - otherwise we'll have to do push-ups!
Let's get down to business folks and run with this ball!

Hi Everyone,
It was an enthusiastic turnout Friday night at the Britannia
Arms for our informal rugby gathering. Great to see everyone and listen to all
those fluid opinions!
From the various discussions I believe the general consensus
for next season is as follows:
1.A south bay league would make a lot of sense (including
EPA, Peninsula, Cupertino, Los Gatos, San Jose, Santa Cruz) –
travel to east bay was a significant handicap last season
2.There is a lot of administration work required to run a
league successfully. We need:
a.Volunteers
and resources
b.To
make an early start with formal meetings, an agreed organization structure,
roles/responsibilities etc
3.Start a significant recruitment campaign soon.
(upcoming events: Stanford Collegiate (May 1 & 2) and Eagles v
Ireland at SCU (May 31))
So… as discussed a formal meeting is hereby arranged
for next week to drive planning for next season.
The meeting is scheduled for Thursday 6:30pm, April 23rd
at the Yahoo Santa Clara building where I work. Please RSVP me as soon
as possible so I have numbers, please also send me your cell phone number
and preferred email address. In the event I do not get permission from
Yahoo I will try to arrange the meeting at either a public library or community
center, any other ideas?
I will send out the exact meeting location once it is known.
Proposed Agenda:
·Introductions
·South Bay league organization structure,
roles/responsibilities, elect members, volunteer assignments etc
·Recruiting preparation for upcoming rugby events
·Subsequent meeting arrangement
·Recap & Summary
Please feel free to comment on the agenda. I think the
primarily focus for the first meeting should be agreement on a league
organization, roles/responsibilities and assignments. For seeding this
discussion I will present a SB league concept based on Friday’s input,
ideas from other sports, and any other ideas you would like to email me.
I would like to encourage you to bring along your own
proposals however. I by no means have all the ideas. My ideas are limited only
to last season, exposure to central valley youth soccer and growing up in New
Zealand a million years ago playing some youth rugby.
I am happy to chair the meeting unless someone else would
like to do it (beware I am a loud voice good only for scrums!). Neil MacDonald
has graciously agreed to take minutes.
The meeting will be limited to two hours max.
I’ve cc’ed all of Chris Fisher’s contacts
on this email in case of interest. Please feel free to extend this invitation
to others and have them RSVP me. Important people are probably missing from
this email.
Look forward to seeing you!
Regards,
Steve

I cannot make it any day this week, but with a little advanced notice, I would like to be involved. The junior high team which pulls from all of the regions you mention just finished on Sunday. I copied aaron on the list.

No
formal agenda except to show some appreciation to Bob and Norm for setting up the
Cupertino Rugby club, shout them a few drinks, and share some ideas for next

Everyone
welcome, look forward to seeing you there!
We've just finished a successful youth rugby season and now need to start planning for next season.
I'm hoping that we'll have a youth league in the south bay with 5-6 clubs and plenty of players. If we plan now, or after the season, we can meet this objective.
Tentative teams
EPA,
Peninsula
Cupertino
Los Gatos
San Jose Ramblers
Santa Cruz???
I've included high school coaches on this email because it is of great interest to them. If we can develop young players in this area then when they go to high school they will (a) have good skills (b) have a team to play for.
When I first started coaching high school rugby here many years ago we had a strong high school program; however, every team with the exception of Bellamine has folded.
We had Gunderson, Leland, Santa Teresa, James Lick ( Mt Hamilton, Roger Beuno), Aptos, Saint Lawrence, Santa Cruz, Saratoga ( Gary Townsends old team) Los Gatos ( Norm Crebill and Dan Smith's old team), Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Burlingame and many more.........
This year the Exiles folded.
If we had a program to support those teams then the south bay could have 20 plus high schools playing rugby.
We need to organize a coherent program, elect members and recruit like mad. I believe that we could easily have 3-500 kids playing youth rugby next season.
If we meet this goal then we'll have a strong U-8, U-10, U-12 and Junior High School programs. We also will not have to travel all over the north bay playing games; all games will be local. I also think we should have the kids playing on Saturday mornings and at one ground if possible.
I'll ask Bruce Carter and Pete Smith to run referee training session for coaches that want to officiate. We need proper refs to oversee games not anyone in the crowd that will reluctantly blow a whistle because no one else will.
In about 2-4 weeks we need to have a serious meeting about getting our numbers up.
Finally at the USA/Ireland game in May we need a big sign promoting youth rugby to the 5-6,000 expected fans.
Thanks to everyone for a very good 2009 season.
The season is now complete. During the off season I hope your sons and
daughters continue to play rugby and use their rugby ball. You can enjoy local
college and club rugby action here in the Bay Area. We will send out notices
for some of the major events.
During the off season, the coaches will meet and discuss ways to improve our
team. Better communication, scheduling, rules, etc. will all be discussed.
I hope to see everyone next season!
Regards,
Bob.
Kudos again to all the coaches for their efforts this season.
It was an excellent introduction to Rugby for Trevor and he has really
become a fan of the sport, as have I.
Thanks much,
Scott Miller

Hi Chris,
I think we're all a little put out by these last minute restrictions.
But I hope we can get all the teams together for Sunday. If everyone
hasn't been able to register, then we'll need to see if the organizers
will go ahead and let the kids play anyway, or try to rejig their
schedules at the last minute. My guess is that there will be a consensus
for playing.

I would understand requiring CIPP for all players if a competition lead
to a regional, state or national championship. This isn't. It's a
loosely organized, end-of-the-season youth tournament which is supposed
to be fun. The people that are "organizing" this event have decided to
dictate the size of competing teams to accommodate they're own clubs.
We've been playing 10-a-side all season and now we're forced to play
8-a-side rugby. The Seahawk U-10's has more than 30 players. Now, out of
the blue, they're thrown this individual CIPP thing on us for nothing
more than an end of season competition which leads to nothing.
As many of you are aware, I am affiliated official with the Northern
California Referee Society and I asked NCRFU Referee President, Dr.
Bruce Carter if any referees had been allocated to this event. He didn't
even know anything about it.
At this stage I can not guarantee if any of the 16 Seahawk players from
Lexington Elementary will be turning up to this shambles of an event if
the "organizers" continue to make unreasonable demands so close to the
actual event. It's an hour plus drive both ways to play from 10:00 a.m.
to noon.
I will send an individual email to my group see what they want to do.
Having ranted on long enough, I would like to congratulate the efforts
of Norm, Bob, Dick, Steve and others from our club for doing a good job
keeping us in tact all season. The same can't be said for the idiots
that are ruining this disorganized end of season event.

Silicon Valley parents:
For the tournament this weekend every player needs proof of CIPP
registration and potentially proof of age. All players participating in
USA Rugby events need CIPP registration for insurance purposes.
Attached are instructions on how to CIPP your player. Please make sure
the players are CIPPed and that you bring the CIPP number (print it
out). It will be checked!
Additionally, any player at the tournament can be challenged for
proof of age if the opposing coach has any doubts. If you think the
player might be above the normal size range, please bring a birth
certificate.

No its your choice, the restrictions are unfortunate I understand,
just trying to point out the basic situation of game time if 30 players do arrive.
Scrimmage may be an option also, but I cannot say for sure.

Steve,
Driving all the way up there for one shortened game does not make
much sense. Is that what you are proposing?

Hi Jim, for U10 there are at least three games to play Sunday.
So if 32 SV players turn out then everyone should get to play at least one
game.
-Game 3 - SV Black – play with 8 kids
-Game 4 – SV White – play with 8 kids
-Game 6 – SV White – play with second 8 kids
-Game 6 – SV Black – play with second 8 kids
With less kids then more games/kid, and of course if we win
there will be more games to play.
HTH

The pain is not
the not just the registration, its the 8 man format and the recent adds.
We have played 10+ all season. With 8 players per side, adding in San
Jose and the other recent adds, we have more enough players for four u10
teams. Seems like to way to much bench time for the players. If everyone
shows up, that's more than 50% on the bench.
Kids hate being
spectators. Specially after driving a third of the way to Tahoe. If we do play,
its not fair to add the new players.
Thank You,
Jim Quigley
