2004 FANTASY FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEW: SEAHAWKS
BY RICK SERRITELLA 7/23/04
Quarterback: Remember when the question in Seattle was Matt
Hasselbeck or Trent Dilfer? Not anymore, since Dilfer's injury two
seasons go Hasselbeck has since settled the controversy. He earned a
trip to the pro bowl in 2003 throwing for 3,841 yards while tossing
26 touchdowns and just 15 interceptions. He should continue to shine
in Mike Holmgrem's west coast offense and a 4,000 yard season could
be on the horizon. Should something happen to Hasselbeck during the
year Dilfer would serve as a nice fantasy rental.
Running Back: Coming off a career year himself is the Seahawks Shaun
Alexander. He has officially established himself as a top five
fantasy back gathering at least 16 touchdowns the past three
seasons. He had 1,435 rushing yards last season and is entering a
contract year so you can expect another great year out of him.
Maurice Morris continues to back up Alexander and has done a fine job
on limited carries but is not a fantasy candidate.
Wide Receiver: The Seahawks rewarded their top receiver Darrell
Jackson in the off-season with a new contract. In his four year
career Jackson has averaged 952 receiving yards on a 15.1 average
with 27 touchdowns. Their other starter Koren Robinson has been
streaky during his career. After gaining 1,240 yards in 2002, his
production tailed off last season after gaining just 896 yards. He
is still considered a good number three or four wide receiver for
fantasy purposes. Slot receiver Bobby Engram seems to have found a
nice little niche in the Seahawks offense after posting back-to-back
seasons of 50 catches and 600 receiving yards. He also added 6
touchdowns last year and could help out as a fourth wide out.
Tight End: As it currently stands Itula Mili appears to be safe to
hold onto his starting job. He put up impressive numbers for the
second straight season and was one of the top producing tight ends
last year. The Seahawks drafted Jeramy Stevens in 2002 but he has
been injury riddled and hasn't produced as expected. Standing at
6'7" tall he is a big target for Hasselbeck and could bite into
Mili's playing time. Drafting either of these ends could be risky.
Fantasy Stud: Stephen Alexander – A high scoring back who has gotten
better every season.
Fantasy Dud: Itula Mili – Production expected to drop off with
Stevens looming to in the background.
Fantasy Sleeper: Bobby Engram – Consistently steady performer who
could boost your teams scoring.
