USA Rugby Announces Second Youth Conference on the Game
(From a USA Rugby press release)
USA Rugby is pleased to announce the Second Annual Youth Conference on
the Game will be held on December 1-2, 2007 in San Diego, California. The
event is the largest gathering of the youth and high school community and
this year’s theme is “Making Rugby the Young Athlete’s Choice.”
“Last year’s conference was about providing an opportunity for the youth and
high school communities to give USA Rugby feedback about how the game
should grow,” USA Rugby Manager of Age-Grade Development Pete
Steinberg said. “This year we will review that work, but will also leverage the
expertise we have in the community to share best practice tools and
approaches to growing rugby.”
The strategic plan developed in 2006, as well as USA Rugby’s High
Performance initiatives for age-grade players, will be reviewed in an evening
pre-conference session on Friday, November 30. The majority of the event
will focus on developing programs and people to help establish rugby as a
viable option in American sport settings. Much of the conference will be split
into youth and high school tracks to allow attendees to focus on their specific
area of interest. Each track will offer both programmatic and technical
sessions.
“Youth conference participants will be given valuable tools they can use to
grow the game,” said Katie Wurst, USA Rugby Game Development Officer
said. “We will be sharing methods to help overcome the lack of human
resources, which is an obstacle we all face in working to create sustainable
programs.”
In conjunction with the Youth Conference, USA Rugby will hold their second
State-Based Development Model (SBDM) candidate assembly on Friday
afternoon. The SBDM is USA Rugby’s primary growth initiative and 14
individuals will be in attendance, representing their home states.
