There was a RAM article in the newspaper about 4 years ago when I first started riding a bicycle... The article really inspired me to take bicycling a notch further. At the time I was riding around the block 3 or 4 times going about 12 - 16 miles... I never envisioned myself going 100 km little alone 100 mi... I saw how you had broken the progress down to manageable incremental steps... To be honest, I was really out of shape and over 50... My son had just phoned me at the time. He said dad, I'm going to ask my girlfriend to marry me... Shock waves went through my mind envisioning myself looking like a penguin in a tux (you know Linux). I went on this get-in-shape and loose weight mode. Part of the routine was bicycling to loose weight. But I got hooked on bicycling in the process.

Back to my story... After the article, I set my goal to ride the AYCE, and do the metric century. I was riding a mountain bike on the road at the time, but figured since that bike was what I had, so that was what I would ride. I took to the incremental steps on my own, somewhat afraid to be the slow poke and everything. Well, I did it... and then I did it again at Leaves of Lincoln a month or so later.
I would really like to encourage you all to see that RAM can be done... Alot of you have passed this phase a long time ago... Just encourage your new bicycling friends, or want-a-bees. Bicycling is the age/sex/size equilizer, every able bodied person can ride a bicycle.

Hello cyclists,

I plan to ride from Swancott Store on Sunday at 2pm. I would like to do 25 miles but can do anything shorter or even a bit longer if you need a different distance.  I'm flexible. I just need some miles.

I ride slow, close to 14 average over 20+ miles, so just about anyone and their grandmother can keep up with me.  No rider will be left behind.

Swancott Store is at the corner of Swancott Road and County Line Road just south of the airport. From 565, take the Wall Triana exit and keep going south (do not turn!) until you get to a stop sign (you are technically on Boeing Blvd at that point). At the stop sign, turn left (you are now on County Line Road) and go a block or two to the next road and you'll see the store at the intersection on the right with a Pure sign where the gas pumps used to be. The store is closed on Sundays.

If you want to go longer or ride faster, feel free to download some maps here:
Trust my maps better than my cue sheets. :o)

If the weather is awful, I will not ride.  However, I'm hoping it'll be alright because I need to cycle!

Some Athens-Limestone County cyclists will be doing a group ride on Saturday 18
April 2009 leaving Athens at 8:00 A.M. from the public parking lot at the corner
of Madison St. and West Washington St. This ride will be in lieu of the annual
Tour de Pig. Due to its scaled back nature, we have come to call it the Tour de
Bacon - as in, due to the unstable economy, we decided to... well... er... poor
pig. The parking lot should be sufficient. However, if it is full, use another
public lot or legal street parking in the area and ride to the start.

The group will likely break up into a few groups based on speed, but we expect a
broad range of speed capabilities. This ride is ride-at-your-own risk, but it
will be lightly supported via cell phone and at least one pickup truck on sweep
(me). It is recommended you bring spare tubes and a cell phone. There are a
few stores along the route for food and fluid re-fills. There will be no other
organized rest stops with supplies.

There will be two defined routes - one about 64 miles (metric century +) and one
about 25 miles. Links to route info follow below. There are a few minor
climbes at about 100 feet and one at 200 feet or so - nothing too difficult.
The total ascent on the 64 mile route is about 2000 feet.

The 64 mile route:
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/TdP09

The 25 mile route:

For directions to the start, I recommend you go to http://maps.google.com, click
"Get Directions", and specify your address as the start and "madison st and
washington st, Athens, AL" as the ending address. Coming from points east and
west, enter Athens on Hwy 72 and turn north on AL-127/Jefferson St SE just west
of the railroad overhead, go 0.9 miles (to the square), and turn left on W
Washington/SR2 Bus/US-72 and go 1 block west.

Please feel free to pass this notice on to other recipients you know might be
interested in joining us.

I'll do up to 25 miles, maybe less if anyone prefers less. I'm flexible (slow, but flexible).  I'll be doing my usual I'm-built-like-a-hobbit very slow pace. If you are looking for a low-stress, easy ride, then I'm the one you want to be riding with, clearly.

Here's the whole route, for those that might be new.

No one will be left behind (except perhaps me...) and no one will be lost if we can help it (if you go off like a rocket and leave everyone, you are, of course, on  your own).

170 Jetplex Blvd is a large building. Park in front of the part with the Siemens sign and the For Lease sign (and others) on it. Jetplex intersects with Wall-Triana between James Record (traffic light) and Electronics Blvd (next traffic life). If you miss it coming down, just turn on Electronics and follow it. Jetplex is a short road connecting Wall-Triana Hwy with Electroncis Blvd. The entrance to 170 has a sign with Continental on it (and some other stuff).

I hope to see you there.

Join us again Wednesday at 5:30 at Bicycles ETC. for 27 miles and a hill or two.

Last week we had our best turnout yet, maybe a dozen or so.  We had enough folks to split into two groups, fast and not-so-fast.

Post-ride a group of 8 retired to the Furniture Factory to repeatedly toast Harry's impending fatherhood.  He and Laurie are expecting as of tonight.  Best wishes.

If you are planning on doing Mark Slone’s Lake Guntersville Ride and don’t like an early wake-up call like Jamie and me, you can book a room in the Lodge Friday night.

The rates are $89/night, or $99 for a bluff-side room with two queen size beds.  The rates are reasonable and plenty of rooms are available for Friday night.

http://www.alapark.com/LakeGuntersville/HotelRooms/

The lodge and restaurant underwent a major renovation in ’07 and the place is looking pretty good.

We’ll be going down Friday evening for dinner in G’ville and chilling at the lodge.

I’ll be leading a 54-mile short loop version of Mark’s ride that day.

I think I am ready for the 54 miler.  However, I plan to do the early wake up call and meet at the Hampton Cove Wal Mart before 8 am.  I can only carry one rider, but I can carry up to 6 bicycles in my pic-m-up truck.  4 on skewers and 2 on a hitch mount rack.  Or I will be just as happy to ride with someone.

Saturday, April 18th at 9:00 AM. This is from the Old Greenbrier building

We are planning to do a 46 mile Nuke Plant Loop from Greenbrier. There
will be a rest stop at 16 miles and another at 38 miles. The weather
looks good for the ride based on the current forecast, but if the weather
is questionable there is a chance that this ride could be shortened to
about 30 miles.

We're discussing making this route a regularly scheduled ride - monthly,
quarterly, ... not sure, yet. Watch for info on that.

Hello friends!

I plan to ride from JetPlex at 5pm tomorrow. I'll do up to 25 miles, or any other lesser amount if anyone who rides my pace or slower prefers less. I'm flexible (slow, but flexible).

I'll be doing my usual I'm-built-like-a-heavyweight-hobbit slow pace.  If you are looking for a low-stress, easy ride, then I'm the one you want to be riding with, clearly.

No rider will be left behind.
Helmet required.

We meet at 170 Jetplex Blvd.  If you come down Wall Triana, Jetplex Blvd intersects with Wall Triana in between James Record (which has a traffic light) and Electronics (which also has a traffic light).  If you miss it and get to Electronics, just turn left and follow that around until you see Jetplex Blvd on your left.  170 is a large building, with a sign at the entrance saying Continental, Aldridge and Raytheon or somesuch and a sign on the building in front of where we park saying Siemens and For Lease.

I will not ride if it is raining at 5pm or thunderstorms are imminent in the ride area between 4:45 and 6:45.

Come join in!
