Good Morning David,
I won't be making it this morning, looks like it'll be the trainer for me.  I hope if y'all ride you have a safe one.  Thanks, hopefully next weekend will be warmer and drier.

Anybody up for a ride Saturday 9:00 AM? Leave from Bikes, Etc. out over High Mountain to County Lake maybe further depending on rain. Do about 60 miles and return the same way we went out. We'll stop at County Lake for a break. Let me know if you're in. Plan for some steady state intervals 6 minutes x 3. Easy between.

Alas, the rain gods have taken back today's ride from Bicycles Etc. at 9:00 AM. I'm getting on the trainer for one of those interval things. However, if the road should dry this afternoon, I'm up for a social ride to the river. I'll post something at 1:00 or so, if it looks possible.

Unfortunately I will be in Georgia for a collegiate race. Since Im pretty familiar with the course, Id like to share my 2 cents if you dont mind.

I have ridden that course many times, both at chill speeds and at race speeds. There are some minor things to consider, such as how unfriendly Simspon Point Road and New Hope are to bicyclists, the one lane bridge on butler mill, and the long length of the loop (its more spectator friendly to keep it to 10-15 miles so people get to see cat 5/4 racers more than once).

The major thing is going to be the descent from Simpsons Point Road to Old 431. The descent is VERY fast, I have hit 54 mph on it, and while I was gunning it, it certainly was not a race pace. It would not be out of the question to see 60+, particularly in the Pro/1/2 field, maybe even the 3's. The speed isnt a problem, the road is definitely safe enough for those speeds. The turn at the bottom, however, is not. The descent does not even get a chance to level out before the turn. It seriously goes from descending a 9-12 percent grade to turning very hard right onto a flat road. The corner is poorly paved, that section of Old 431 is poorly paved, and loose gravel and potholes are in that corner. It is essentially a U turn, and I wouldn't call that turn safe at 15 mph. Racers would have to decelerate from 50-10 mph in less than 200m, make an almost 180 degree turn, and from there have only a few miles back to New Hope.

Climbers and breakaway specialists will be trying to make their breaks work after the climb, will be running from a determined pack, and screaming down that descent. Both breakaway and chasers will be gunning it going down that hill. I see some very nasty crashes resulting.

I know we want to get a good climb on this loop. Keel and Green are too steep for a road race in my opinion, Monte Sano/Bankhead is too difficult to work into a route, and 4 mile post/Cecil Ashburn is too heavy on traffic. I would reccoment trying this course both directions if time allows, but leaving the table open to other possible routes. We don't have to have a climb to have a good race. The roads out in hampton cove are great for racing, although not really very hilly.

We (UAH Cycling Team) are probably hosting a race next spring, so we are already eyeing road courses. In my opinion, the safest, most spectator friendly and neutrally challenging course is Old Gurley right onto Cherry Tree, Cherry Tree right onto New Hope Cedar Point Road, New Hope Road right onto College, College Right onto Main Drive, and Main Drive Right onto Old Gurley Pike. Citing concerns about College, just dont have the sprint there. Have the finish line past the church on Old Gurley. It will make the crit specialists happy. Or, if you are frisky, you can have the finish at the top of the hill in Cedar Point. There is a church with a nice parking lot up there. (for a church that holds 20 people max...). Then you get a hilltop finish that will space the sprint out a bit.

Ive definitely offered my thoughts, and I don't know if they'll matter, but I hope it gets you guys and gals thinking. I wish I could help more, but my spring schedule is hectic and ill be rocking in Indiana most of the summer. All I gotta say is make it a hilltop finish at the top of Green Mountain :)

We’re looking at a new race course in New Hope for the July race weekend.  I need a small pack of racer types to evaluate turns and descents in the context of a slavering, raging herd of leg shavers.

We’ll ride to New Hope and circulate the 27 mile loop to take a hard look at critical turns and descents that would be taken at speed in a race.  This might involve some hard riding, but I’m in no condition to sustain continued abuse.

Distance:  Upper 50-something miles.

Route:  We’re looking at a route that avoids the traffic-heavy passage of College street and the crappy sprint over manhole covers and such.  We’ll instead take paint rock road around the ‘backside’ of New Hope over to Butler Mill and then climb up to Deerlick on Simpson Point road.  Descend Simpson Point back to Old 431/CR 77 back to main street.

The UCI does not look too kindly on that stuff.  Armstrong probably got a hall pass being in Cali and by the fact that the Helicams did not capture the insult for the commisars to review later.

Yeah, that was Vladimir Belli, and he got thrown out of the Giro for that.  And I think he was sitting in the top 5 of the GC when they booted him, too.

Ozzie,
The Sumatanga practice races have A & B groups. That would be a good experience. Practice ridng in the pack and out of the wind. It's only about 1 1/2 hours from Huntsville. There are two more weekends for that and then we have the Speedway Omnium on April 5th.

Dave, if you have a group that has a similar "handicap" to mine, ie joint
replacement and overall bike slug, let me know. I'd be glad to race
against my peers..

The speedway omnium will be April 5 at the Huntsville Speedway...
BEEEE THEERRREE!

The omnium works like this. You get 3 chances to race for a low
fee of only $20. Each event is short short, if you get dropped,
no worries, just pull out and save you legs for the next event.
It is only required that you take the start on each event in order
to continue. So this is perfect for anyone who is still coming
up to speed. This is in contrast to going all the way to B'ham
to race in a crit and finding yourself dropped after 10 minutes.
Long ways to go with little to show for it.

So the Speedway Omnium will work like this. You try to pull in
points in each event, or help your buddies from your club do
so. Prizes for those who gather in the most points over the
3 events (that is, the omnium result). If your team (club)
gathers enough points, you can do the team pursuit... all this
for one low price of $20 (assuming you have your license
already).

The entertainment value of the Speedway Omnium will be unlike any
other cycling event this state has ever seen. Instead of getting
one look at the cyclists on every lap, and then when attacks are
made on the back stretch you are wondering what happened, with
the speedway you see every second of the action.

So stay tuned this will be promoted and announced officially
a lot in the coming weeks...

James

Thanks David, I guess the Sunday RSA ride was uncivilized this week, as there was no one to “ride pretty good for a girl”.

We did the Tour de Tuscaloosa road course at the collegiate races this weekend. The course is great, you should definitely check it out at least for the Road Race.

Far as crits go, you'll never quite be ready for one until you hop in. I used to hate, despise and fear crits. But after a few I actually kind of enjoy them. From what I hear the new crit course is pretty mild. A big plus about crits is how spectator friendly they are too. The family gets to see you every minute instead of every 30! And less hills, less distance, and less time. Its like the microwave of bike racing.

Sumatanga Training Race, A race, 10 mile flat loop with maybe 3/4
small hills, done 5 times

Sunny, Breezy, chilly. Staying warm in the car right up until start
time . Roll up to the 50+ bunch. Feels like I'm layered up just right.
Lap 1 way back at the start. Narrow roads and big bunch keeps me there
while break of unknown quantity rolls off. Ask around and no one seems
to know how many. All I know is Marx Bensdorf is blocking. Lap 2. Legs
not much feeling the 81 I did yesterday. Able to move around and ride
in the front 3rd. Nice. No organized chase, Alabama Masters taking a
few good shots at the front but mostly solo efforts. Hibberts has a
few good digs up there. Lap 3. Roll past the start/finish near the
front and someone's trying to crash off my back wheel. Was riding
straight and level, I promise. Dude saves it but zings off into the
grass. Feel good and pitch in at the front for a bit. Have one good
go, but someone rips hard off the front shifting me in reverse. Drift
back - feeling iffy. Jim Brock zips past trying to rally the troops.
Lap 4 and get stuck behind a guy stepping off at the start/finish.
Takes me to the back while up front a split's forming. Think I see
some orange up there. Craig Armstrong I'm thinking. Break's just
ahead. Bunch rolling steady fast to bring 'em back. At the back having
my own private nightmare with a firm handle on the lantern rouge.
Several times thinking I'll to pop but somehow manage to hang.
Remember the Powerbar in my pocket and woof it down. Lap 5. Seriously
consider packing it in. Keep going and mercifully start feeling a bit
better. Hand off the lantern probably to the guy who was fighting me
for it some on lap 4. Generating a few more Ws now and can at least
move around the bunch again. Coming home - don't know if we reel in
the break and don't care. Soft pedal across the line for a (back of)
pack finish.

Aside: This was a shakedown ride for my new DA 7900 group. Love the
brakes, great stopping power. Downshift is very easy. Upshift seemed a
bit more work but that may just be me getting used to the new position.

Sharon,
I've ridden with you and your having a handicap only makes it possible for the rest of us to keep up with you sometimes.
David

Dave, if you have a group that has a similar "handicap" to mine, ie joint
replacement and overall bike slug, let me know. I'd be glad to race
against my peers..
