SCCC racers:
Antarus, SCCC's racing team, wrapped up a reasonably successful first
season last month and we are looking to build upon that for next
year. We are again extending an invitation to all club members to
join the team.
Benefits of team membership include learning basic skills of racing
and bike handling, as well as more advanced concepts of training and
team tactics. The most rewarding benefit is in the camaraderie of
racing and training together as a team. We focus primarily on
Master's races, meaning you will be racing against experienced Cat 1
and 2 racers most of the time
Team membership requires a significant commitment of time and energy,
and a little bit of money. To start with, we would like anyone
interested in racing with us to begin attending our training rides so
we can get to know you better. We ride on Saturday mornings and
Tuesday evenings year-round. Team members are expected to attend at
least two training rides per month and commit to 10 races per year.
All team members are required to provide $100 team dues. This fee
will be refunded upon completion of all membership requirements (10
mass-start races and regular attendance of training rides). In
addition, you will need to purchase at least one team kit ($150), a
USA Cycling license ($60), and SCCC racing membership ($15).
Current team members are Craig Armstrong, Jay Boles, Steve Carter,
Jeff Critser, Chris Cundiff, Chris Dow, Joe Duhon, Jim Everts, Mark
Freeman, Kelly Groves, Heath Goebel, Randall Roland, Hugh Sharp, Steve
Swann and Andrew York.
So come on out and start riding with us. We would like to have next
years membership nailed down within the next month so we can get
clothing orders in.
Hugh Sharp/Antarus
In the interest of full disclosure, the ride has about 2400 feet of climbing (sum of all increases in elevation) since you go over Monte Sano twice. Mark, Craig, Hugh, and others were not able to ride a sensible end-of-October training ride. I nearly got dropped on the Dug Hill Road run and Freeman went up every climb like his life depended on it (he attributed it to the new Storck bicycle he got from Steve--beautiful bike, by the way). My heart rate went to 187 a couple of times trying to keep up with these jerks and I do not recommend riding with them if you want a sub zone 5 ride (I had 10 minutes of zone 5). But, it would be nice to have more folks and I highly encourage everyone to come out--it was great fun. I didn't know that Oakwood Avenue now crosses Monte Sano! Oh, the things you will learn riding with these
@$$h01es. Come on out; it will be good for you.

Craig Armstrong, Davis Blackwelder, Mark Freeman, Hugh Sharp, Ted Walker, Andrew York and I rode the inaugural Tuesday Night WC from Bicycles Etc. Turned out to be a real slugfest. The course reviews were highly favorable. About the same distance as the loop we've been riding from Williams Elementary (28 mils), but it has the hills that are missing from the Williams Elementary course.

Our pals down in Tuscaloosa have come up with some pretty sharp Alabama Cycling Team Kit. Makes for a snappy way to 'represent' when riding out of state.

Let's do the flyer for November 8th. People who don't race, but are used to fast group rides would not find this intimidating if they came out and got the feel for the amount of room on this track. I was reticent to race several years ago, but Hugh Sharp told me road racing was much like a fast group ride, just stay out of the sprint toward the end to be safe. Mike Olheiser told me to stay out of the wind so I didn't get dropped. Racing in my age group turned out to be a lot of fun, win or lose, and a great way to stay fit. The track provides a respite from the typical training ride and seems a lot safer than a typical crit around tight corners on city streets.
I'd like to do an event early next year. If we could do practice races as well that count as mass start events perhaps those of us Cat 5 people could accrue some races that would lead toward the ten needed to move to Cat 4.
I collected $40 beyond the $100 needed to rent the track last time, so we can use that for the Nov 8th rental. I think everybody had as much fun as I did. Maybe this will bring more people.

David,
Let me know when you want to start planning an actual, permitted race event at Huntsville Motor Speedway. I'm pretty convinced that safe races can be held there. It is unlikely we can get a larger turnout until we actually have some kind of organized event, and of course having larger groups will make things more dangerous. But that's true for any kind of bike racing.
I'm committed to filing the paperwork late this year
in order to establish a licensed USA cycling club for 2009. This club would serve as the organizer for speedway events, if this is agreeable to you. We would need to get together and discuss how to organize things. The club would essentially use you as race director, obtain the necessary permit, and as long as ACA doesn't object, I would serve as the Chief Ref (and perhaps only ref/judge). This would help us put on a fairly low-budget affair with minimum hassle.
Educating racers about the track and how fun it can be is an ongoing challenge. It doesn't help when you start getting "advice" from people who haven't even been there to see it for themselves. So the events in November serve this purpose, primarily, trying to get the word out to our cycling community.
To help promote the next race session on Nov. 8, I'd like to draft a "flier" that describes the racing
format we'd want to use, something similar to what we did last time. I would like to put a registration table out front and get a signed release form for every racer. Also, we would take care of the "donation" right up front. Each registrant would get a flier with a schedule of events and instructions on how we want to proceed.
The seeding of groups would be based on 1 km TT instead of 1 lap and I'd like to do this more properly by using a holder and a starter. This is fairly simple and a couple of people can be drafted for this. I would keep the finish times and sort out the A and B groups (if enough people to warrant this).
There may be some folks who are interested in just the TT and that might help get folks to come out who might otherwise feel intimidated. You might consider letting people do the TT and paying less, say, only $5.
There are variations on
the mass-start races that we can try. For "points" racing we can award points for top-3 for each sprint lap. Another format is "point a lap" where EVERY lap is a sprint (but with only one place). This is shorter and more intense, maybe 10 laps, would bonus points for final lap.
The results would be compiled and posted to the web and I think this would stimulate more interest.
Back to the idea of a "real" race in 2009, this kind of format would be used again, with a flier developed that lays out the racing rules we are using. These races are not what I consider to be "criterium" racing but maybe that is how it is presented. We would not seed racers but rather use racing categories to determine what groups race together. Still might want to have a TT (maybe more than 1 km but not long). Certainly an omnium to declare an overall winner would be a good
idea.
Since most races are "rain or shine" the permit needs to clearly state that an alternate date would be used in case of rain.
One of the key challenges will be to determine a good date for such an event in 2009. The calendar will be filling up pretty quick, and then we have to find a date when the raceway is not being used. A low-key event early in the season might even be possible, more-or-less for a training race.
This got way too long. Sorry. I'm out of town Saturday but around Sunday for email or you can call me on my cell 509-2388.
Anyone want to join me for a 2.5 to 3 hour ride from Madison Saturday afternoon? I plan to leave from the Madison Branch Public Library(behind Kroger off of Hughes Rd) at 2pm. I plan to ride down Mill and through Burgreen up to Creekside and Copeland. I will be riding at an endurance pace(17-19 mph on the flats).
Let me know if you plan to join me so I will know if I have to swing by the library or not.
I may not be near the computer during the morning hours so call my cell phone if you don't get an email reply by 11am.

From our friends at SORBA and the Land Trust. Their
hosting an IMBA trail-building school on November 1.
To all,
I would like to
invite you to a great learning opportunity, Saturday November 1!
The Land Trust
of Huntsville and North Alabama in partnership with SORBA (Southern Off Road
Bicycling Association) is proud to present the IMBA TRAIL SCHOOL sponsored by
IMBA (International Mountain Biking Association) and Subaru Motor Corporation.
This school will provide instruction, demonstration, and handout materials to
all in attendance sharing knowledge on building sustainable trails in our
community. This event is free to the public, though we require an RSVP in order
to ensure adequate refreshments. We will provide morning coffee and treats as
well as a light lunch.
The workshop
will be broken into two sessions. The morning session will consist of a
classroom presentation followed in the afternoon with hands on demonstration of
the techniques learned. The program starts at 8am, includes a lunch and ends at
5pm. We will meet at Monte Sano Elementary School on Monte Sano Boulevard
across the street from Channel 31. Please, consider joining us for this great
educational opportunity! You can RSVP by responding to this email (to andy@...,) signing up at
the link on our website, or calling the Land Trust office 256-534-5263. We look
forward to seeing you there!
The Speedway was great fun. Glad you could make it. I'll see about higher resolution on the photos. If I can do that, I'll post another link in case others are interested as well.
Team Redneck started as a joke about 27 years ago with a few of us from Alabama rode the Hilly Hundred in Indiana. Somebody rode past our group and said, "A group from Alabama." Tom Tenbrunsel replied, "We're Team Redneck." We've ridden together and a diverse group formed and grew over the years. Last year we decided to raise money for Diabetes and John Hunter designed a Team Redneck kit for us. We raised about $4K+. Some of us even ordered skinsuits for time trials. Anybody can be a Team Redneck member. We'll probably have an updated design in the near future.
Every member gets a nickname, for example, Eze Ed, Pullin' Paul, Dangerous Dave (me), Tom Terrific, Bouncing Bob, Big Bad Bob, Darlin' Downhill Danielle.
Sorry all. That was the wrong reply to the wrong email. But hey, it was still a great, tough ride. And Tom pulled me in all of the way. Mark and Dianne probably enjoyed the ride more than me because it was killing me to keep Tom's wheel. Thanks Tom! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Freddy%20Steele" <frellieid2004@...> To: morganandriulli@... Man, you guys are missing some awesome touring. Sunday we climbed up to Sewanne. Yesterday rode from Sewannee to Chattanooga up Suck Creek. Today we did Signal Mtn and then some other climb which was like going up Keel but not quite as steep, but about 1.5 times as long. 75 Sunday, 60 yesterday, 100 today (with all the climbing). Tomorrow we ride to Gatlinburg - 80 or so. I am whipped! Even Tom Branch said it was really tough today. I filled my water bottles up with Coke at the Subway where I devoured a 12", chips, and coke and then we hit the road. Tom and I rode off from Dianne and Mark just to go ahead and get it over with. It was in the top 10 toughest rides I have ever done. Very memorable. We just got done around 45 minutes ago and we started around 9:30. What a day!

Druid City Bicycle Club (Tuscaloosa) wants you to save the date of August 15th, 2009 to ride the North Harbor Hot Hundred. It has distance options from 23 to 100ish miles and the money raised goes to a good cause in Tuscaloosa, the North Harbor Mental Health Center.
It's a great (but hot) ride over rolling hills of western Tuscaloosa county and Green county.

Yes, we need to get someone out there who can make it a little more interesting for Ryan. He pretty much owned those of us who were there yesterday. With one leg and one lung tied behind his back it might have been close. : )

I had a blast Sunday. It was a great workout and a beautiful day. I hope more will come out next time.

Thanks to all fourteen who showed up to race today. We tried several formats and had many opportunities to sprint to the line or try to ride away from our group. I can just say it was more fun than you can imagine on a bike. We will do it again on the 8th of November and the 22nd of November. Rain day will be the following Sunday afternoon. It was a great workout. I'm still coughing up my lungs. You've got to give this a try. Let me know if you're up for either or both of the next two. There were no female riders. Please join us next time.
