Join us again at Bicycles Etc. at 5:30 for the Wednesday
evening ride. I’ve got a case of dead legs from too much
hill-slogging, so we might do something flat instead of the East side of Cecil
Ashburn this week. Proposed ride: NW Passage – Carter’s
Gin Road. ~30 miles.
Pace will be moderate, 16 mph average or so. Maybe a
bit quicker since the route is flatter.
Meet at: Bicycles Etc. is at 611A Meridian Street,
just south of the corner of Pratt Avenue, past Garden Cove Produce and the
Sherwin Williams paint store.

Yup. You read it right!!
Team Cycleworks p/b HDR and Aaron's Cycling Team have combined their efforts in an effort to produce a terrific race weekend 08/09-08/10 and have amassed a tremendous prize list now at $13,000 in cash and prizes!!!!
In addition to lots and lots of cash, product primes and prizes from tremndous sponsors like Myogenesis, VCRC Ceramics, Maxxis, Tifosi, Patagonia and Raging Burrito. There will be gift card up for grabs from restaurants like Stella, Doc Chey's, Nancy G's, Osteria, Foxgloves & Ivy and Agave. Jeanne's Body Tech, Park Pet and Barkinghound have also donated complimentary services as prizes.
Hmmm. I suppose that since Mexico is part of the American continent a company in Mexico could have a legitimate claim to the name American Beef, seems like a very "strategically chosen" name though doesn't it.
But to me the bigger irony here is that the sponsor of this drug plagued cycling squad is from an industry (beef industry) that is even more drug plagued than cycling. The team may now have access to new and better bovine developed "products" for which the UCI doesn't yet have tests. Maybe the Thoroughbred Racers of America will be the next organization to sponsor a cycling team.

Well, Barloworld will be getting a new name (probably a generic one for a while).
Saunier-Duval Scott will become Scott-American Beef. Hmm... I wonder if any of those cyclists are vegetarians? How is it that "American Beef" is from Mexico? The mind boggles.
American Beef signs on as co-sponsor of Scott squad

The former Saunier Duval-Scott team will continue as Scott-American Beef after the squad’s title sponsor announced Wednesday that it would leave professional cycling in the wake of a drug scandal at the Tour de France.
Italian rider Riccardo Riccò tested positive for a new version of the banned blood booster EPO after the stage-four time trial, prompting the team to pull out of the race last week. Both Riccò and his compatriot Leonardo Piepoli, who had won the prestigious Bastille Day stage but had not failed a dope test, were sacked last Friday.
Also signing on with American Beef, based in Chihuahua, Mexico, are the Vuelta a Chihuahua, the state government of Chihuahua and Tierratech, according to a press release issued Friday and signed by general manager Mauro Gianetti and team manager Joxean Fernández Matxin.
Scott-American Beef will race at the Clasica San Sebastian, and its management has also been in touch with Unipublic, organizers of the Vuelta a España, in an attempt to “clarify definitively the events which led them to leave the Tour de France and to lose their main sponsor,” the announcement continued.

“We consider that what happened at the Tour is sad but do not have to condemn the whole team, who always showed fair play,” said Ricardo Creel, president of American Beef. “Those who are guilty must be punished, but all other honest racers, as well as the whole staff of the team, must be able to end the season with complete peace of mind.”
Saunier Duval, part of a German company specializing in domestic heaters and air conditioners, was the second sponsor to turn its back on cycling at this year's Tour.
The first was Barloworld, which acted after Moises Duenas tested positive for the banned blood booster on stage four.

There’s been some questions
regarding kids, family and friends.
Yes, Monte Sano pool is
specifically kid and family friendly. And, yes, you can bring guests,
especially if they are cyclists or interested in cycling.

Sent on behalf of our friends with the Montgomery Bicycle
Club. This century has a reputation for good support and the best pre-ride
soiree in the state.
Take a cycling stay-cation that’s closer to
home! Why go out of state when one of the best rides in the southeast is just
down the road?
The 2008 Glassner Autumn
Challenge is the 7th annual century held in memory of Dr. Jim Glassner, a
longtime friend and supporter of cycling in central Alabama. A member of the
Montgomery Bicycle Club, Jim was killed in a cycling accident on December 16,
2001, and we renamed our century event (which we’ve been running since
the ‘80s) in his honor.
How challenging do you want
your ride? Pick from
30 miles
62 miles (metric
century)
100 miles
130 miles
(double-metric+)
No matter what distance you
choose, you’ll be biking the beautiful, tree-lined, rural roads of
central Alabama, and you will be supported every mile of the way with
mechanical support, sag wagons, and rest stops supplied with plenty of fruit,
light snacks, water, and sports drinks.
The short routes offer
gently rolling hills, while the longer routes offer moderately rolling hills.
The routes will be clearly marked and will keep you on beautiful rural roads
with light traffic.
A delicious pancake (and
more!) breakfast will be served by the Pintlala Baptist Church at the Church
fellowship hall from 6:30 to 8:00 a.m. Cost of the breakfast is included in
your registration.
Event schedule:
Monday, August 08: registration increases from $30.00 to $40.00.
Friday, August 29, 6:00 p.m.: Friday Night Reception at Lakeview Center (see
details below).
Saturday, August 30, 06:30 a.m.: Registration and breakfast.
Saturday, August 30, 07:30 a.m.: course opens for the century and double-metric
riders.
Saturday, August 30, 08:00 a.m.: course opens for metric century and 30-mile
riders.
Saturday, August 30, 08:30 a.m.: all riders must be out on the road.
Saturday, August 30, 04:30 p.m.: course closes.
WHAT OUR PAST
PARTICIPANTS SAY:
“I just wanted to say thank
you for making my first Century ride such a wonderful experience. The
volunteers were wonderful, the sag stops were wonderful, and the overall
experience was… WONDERFUL!”
“I’ve
been to sporting events all around the Southeast. There are none better.”
“We drove
up from Mobile for the Century ride this weekend and had the time of our lives.
The support and volunteers were amazing and we had the ride of our life
finishing the 100 miles in just under 5 and ½ hours. Thanks for the great job
and dedication to cycling.”
“The entire
event was coordinated beautifully. I just can’t say enough good things
about it. I will definitely sign up next year.”
“The
countryside was beautiful and the roads took advantage of the impressive
scenery and sights.”
“Everything
you could want in a ride – great food, great course and an overall great
time.”
FRIDAY NIGHT WINE
& CHEESE RECEPTION – August 29, 6-8 p.m.
A chance to mingle with
fellow cyclists and pre-register for the ride. Those who have registered in
advance will also be able to pick up their packets, but must still sign in with
us the morning of the event.
Directions: From I-85, take Exit 9 ( Taylor Road).
Go south on Taylor Road and turn left onto Eastchase Parkway. Continue past the
Shoppes at East Chase for approximately one mile and turn right on Eastchase
Lane. The four-story Lakeview Center is on the left – enter the main

Last week’s ride showed a good turnout, only to suffer
a minor mutiny with 2/3 of the pack deciding to take the shorter, flatter
option. Two of us pressed on to slug it out over Cecil Asburn drive.
I credit an uncharacteristically wussy Jim Everts for inciting a mass bailout
at Dug Hill Road
Join us at Bicycles Etc. at 5:30 for the Wednesday night
ride. We’ll ride the Dug Hill Road/King Drake/Cecil Ashburn loop a
half-mile shorter than last week (or not). It’ll be much less
torrid than Monday/Tuesday, so conditions are right for a good ride. As
usual, you should be prepared for at least two pitchers at Furniture Factory
after the ride.
Pace will be moderate, 16 mph average or so.
Bicycles Etc. is at 611A Meridian Street, just south of the corner

SCCC RR Masters field
Registration area. Bro's giving me a hard time for not warming up.
Reassure him we'll do the climb slow the first time. Plenty of time
after that to get warm. Start/finish. Will Hibberts says to me "Timmy,
is that a pine cone you got back there?" Takes a second to register,
then laughing I say "oh no, its a 23x11. A 21 should be fine. You can
always get out of the saddle." Climb makes a lier of me - actually do
use the 23 a little bit.
Gum Springs x1. Slow going up the early steep part. Hit the shallow
section. Say to my bro's teammate Shane "I thought this climb was
longer than this." He says to me "its not over." Oh. Through the feed
and over the last steep bit. One last rise at the right hander and the
bunch is all together. Decending. Few guys darting in and out more
than makes me comfortable, but no worries. Real fast down the second
part with the crappy pavement. Almost scary fast. Flat parts. Rolling
through one of the right hand turns. 10 back in the middle of the
road, out the saddle and sprinting. Bikes start crashing to the ground
in front of me. Yelping while full on the brakes and skidding, make a
prayer nobody T-bones me from behind. Plow into somebody's bike and
fall straight on top of Chris Dow. Jump back up, thankful none of my
skin is stuck to tarmac, and grab my bike. Mount the chain, saddle up,
and catch back on the bunch that's eased up a bit. All's good except
my stem's cocked over to the left several degrees. Moving to the front
for Gum Springs x2. Tucked in nicely about 5/6 th position and stay
that way up the climb. Glue up real tight - just helps that little
extra. Learned this years ago from hanging on Tom Branch's wheel up
Governor's trying not to pop. In the hurt tent pretty good on the last
steep part. Crest. Look around. Half the bunch has vanished. Surprised
actually but sad also. My bro's not here. Antarus (Craig, Jim, Andrew
and Joe) and plenty of ERA/Alabama Masters make the split of about 15.
One guy still 45 seconds or so up the road. Tooling along no urgent
chase from the group. Sittin' in with conviction knowing the last time
up Gum Springs will be decisive. Duhon attacks before the climb but
it's not happening. Gum Springs x3. Similar pace as Gum Springs x2.
Watch Craig and he's sitting down spinning smoothly. Through the feed
zone riding too far to the right and have to slow for riders snatching
bottles. Swing left and mentally kick myself for the brain cramp. Out
of the saddle on the last steep bit and it hurts. Craig, Hurley, and a
big Tennessee guy put a small gap on me, two ERA riders, and another
dude from Knoxville. Thinkin' it's a no brainer we'll catch on, purge
the thought of killing myself trying to jump across on the last rise.
Crest 10-15 seconds off Craig's group. Andrew, riding really well,
latches on. Try to cajole the group to chase but its not happening.
The Tennessee guy is sandbaggin, and the ERA guys are seriously
conflicted about chasing down Hurley. Hit the decent on the front and
an ERA guy is yelling at me over and over "pick a line!". Finally
have to say something so he'll leave me alone. Realize later my stem
situation must've had me wrestling with the bike to make it go straight.
Flat parts. 45 seconds to Craig's group. ERA guys finally decide 3 on
8 is better than 1 on 3, but it's too late. Never really work well
together and the gap stays around 1 minute. Probably working too much.
Attack at the "lordy lordy looks who's 40" sign. ERA rider has a go
and snatches a decent gap. Try desparately to salvage 5th place but he
stays just ahead. 1k kite. Feeling strong. Punch it with 300 to go.
Flying and think I've got it, but its 30m too long. 7th.
