Make room on your calendar on April 26 for a great ride for a good cause.

The Family Services Center of Huntsville (http://www.fsc-hsv.org/) is holding its Spring Fling ‘Metric Plus’ Fundraiser on April 26 in New Hope, AL.

Routes range from a 6-mile family fun ride up to the ‘Metric Plus’ 75-miler.  This is an especially scenic ride that takes in the Paint Rock River, Cathedral Caverns and many ‘undiscovered’ roads and up and across Skyline Mountain that have never been seen on an organized ride.

With one 2.5 mile climb at the halfway point miles of rollercoasters, this is a great leg test for the upcoming big May centuries like Cheaha, Three State and Huntsville Tour de Cure (FKA Four Hills).

This is a fully supported ride with three rest stops, door prizes and a pizza feast under the shade trees at historic New Hope United Methodist Church.

Check out the details at the FSC web site, or register directly at Active.com.

The Spring Fling benefits the Family Services Center.  This local nonprofit does the hard work of providing mental health and substance abuse counseling, domestic violence intervention, and family strengthening, self-sufficiency, anti-poverty and other assistance programs in north Alabama.

Family Services Center is a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit, community-based human services agency that has assisted less fortunate individuals and families since 1962.  The mission of Family Services Center is to provide quality family support programs and professional counseling to residents of north Alabama and south central Tennessee

Come to Huntsville April 26 to ride some new roads and support a great local charity.

Cat 1,2,3 Masters - 83 miles - Cuba, AL
Heavy fog. And cold. But only packed short sleeves. Shivering
uncontrollably riding round just before the start.
Decide its best to just stand at the start banner. Too cold trying to
warm up. At the start, three guys sprint from the line like its a
crit, motorin' up the road. Chase starts in earnest, pegging the break
at 200-300 meters. Up and over the two short climbs. Don't feel too
bad. Fast downhill sections that begin to level off. Riding in the
front third and off
to the right shoulder as is my want. Hear un-natural pack noises.
Instinctively brake and merge right. Don't really
see the crash just in front of me, but the sounds of bicycles
smashing to the ground behind me are incredible. At least 10 go down.
Like dominoes. Crash. Crash, crash. Crash. Nasty. We roll on, a
considerably thinned pack, with less impetus for chasing the break.
Lap 2 and not feeling super on the course backside. Hammer's falling
and a first chase begins to form. About 10 guys. 15 or so left in the
bunch (now 2nd chase) including me. Couple of strong guys pull us
round for a while - a Cat 3, masters rider, and a 2. The masters rider
noodles off the front. Not thinking he's got much chance by his
lonesome, but he dusts us and eventually bridges to the first chase
(as gathered from the post race chatter) with another dude that shot
off earlier. Two final laps and just riding near the front sitting on
wheels, going with any remaining digs. We catch one unfortunate soul
who flatted, and another who popped from the first chase. Final lap
and we go hard up the last two hills. On the last one, seems faster
than we hit it all day - even with the full bunch. The second chase is
now down to 9-10. Just a few attacks coming home, I make one but its
not happening. We catch an unlucky 3 from the first chase with about 2
to go. Sit in tight 3rd/4th position with Cundiff as we hit the 1k to
go uphill finish. The strong Cat 3 whose wheel I want takes off at 500
which suprises me. Two dudes grab that wheel and I grab Cundiff's.
4th in the field sprint. 18th overall. 3:40. Tough course. Long, hard
day in the saddle. Up and down, up and down, but felt like more up
than down.

I started my timer when we turned onto Zierdt road and stopped it when Joe and I self-destructed 200 yards from the finish. Avg 25.4. That's second best to 25.5 mph on 7/26/07. The rotation was working smoothly last night. And, the usual suspects put a hurt on the group. I've missed the last two, but was impressed with Andrew in the UVA kit putting the hammer down at the front. And, if you think we dropped Hugh last night, we didn't. Steve dropped his water bottle on the access road and "buddy system" Hugh stopped to ride with him. If you don't know about Hugh's buddy system, then ask him.

A couple of notes for newcomers.

1. We usually sprint for the green city limits signs. We usually skip the sign on Zierdt before Triana because we're still warming up, but the sign on Wall Triana a half mile (?) before the left of Beadle, the sign on Highway 20 before Moorseville and the sign two hundred yards later on Mooresville Rd before the overpast are fair game. Also, I'm not sure what sign/point Craig is sprinting for, but he has owned the second hill on Wall for the past year.

2. The start/finish is subdivision sign on Zierdt. Can't remember the subdivision name. It's where the road opens up with a center turn lane. It's earlier than last year because the road is torn up. I usually point it out, but didn't last night.

Next week is the McMullen RR course. Park on the street at Candlestand Circle. It's a great course. 5 mile loop including McMullen, Cherry Tree, Eslinger. There are some rolling hills on Eslinger and McMullen. It's a long drive out there, so make sure you leave work early enough. No complaints from the Madison/Harvest riders. It's a long haul for the Hampton Cove riders to make it to Williams Elementary.

Directions to McMullen RR:

If traveling over Monte Sano on HWY 431 (East on Governors Drive), travel 4-5 miles and turn Left at Old 431/Sutton Road. (If you pass the KFC on your right you've gone too far.)

If traveling over Cecil Ashburn Dr. (Four Mile Post extension), continue straight on Sutton Road for 0.7 miles and cross HWY 431 (Publix/Hampton Cove area).

1.6 miles from the intersection turn Right onto Old 431 (Softball fields on the right). Go 1.3 miles, then Left onto Cherry Tree Road. Go 2.2 miles, then Left onto McMullen Road. Go 1.0 mile, then Left onto Candlestand Circle.

about 30 folks--nice turnout

As estmated from my Garmin:

39 miles in 93 minutes (finished at 7:18 p.m.) for an average speed of 25.16 mph

We rode slowly until the turn west in Triana, so if you take that out of the ride by subtracting about 3.2 miles and 11 minutes, we had an average speed of about 26.34 mph during the time that we rode seriously.  This was pretty good taking into account the slow downs at the intersections.

Next week at the Cherry Tree loop past Hampton Cove.

Dean Della Pella updated the SCCC web site with information about the new club jersey. Check http://www.springcity.org/2008jersey.html for details.

According to Sugoi, we can order both RS shorts and RS bib shorts. The minimum order for shorts is 24 combined. The cost for custom RS bib shorts is $77.50. The cost for cuustom RS shorts is $67.50. If we can get 24 confirmed orders, then I will order them.

The design of the shorts will probably have the yellow/purple diamon pattern on the sides and yellow with Spring City Cycling Club or SCCC across the butt.

Attached are two pictures. 2008 SCCC Jersey.jpg is the jersey laid out on the Sugoi template. The colors look yellow and blue, but are actually yellow and purple. Jersey Design Blow-up.jpg is a blow-up of the "rocket city" design on the front of the jersey.

We are planning to order club-fit, short sleeve Sugoi RS jerseys. The Sugoi RS jerseys are nice - great material and great fit. Available sizes are unisex XS - 2XL. If we order 101+ jerseys, then the cost is $55/jersey. If you want to try on a Sugoi jersey, they are in stock at Fleet Feet Sports (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Fleet+Feet,+Huntsville,+AL&ie=UTF8&z=12&iwloc=A).

Please let me know if you intend to purchase a jersey. I'd like to place our order Monday, March 17. I'll need to collect money before we place the order.

[The Cheaha Challenge is the First Sunday in May. The long version includes a climb of Alabama's highest mountain. If you do the 50 miler, there's only one climb and if you have been up Monte Sano you can easily handle this. - Amelia]
Many of you who rode Cheaha in 2007 have already registered for the May 4 2008 ride. If you have not, this is just a reminder that the late-fee deadline is approaching later this month. Also, we are excited to announce that Frankie Andreu, 9 time Tour de France participant and former US Potal rider, will be our special guest for the weekend!
Frankie will do some guest announcing at the Sunny King Criterium bike races in downtown Annsiton at the festival on Satuday evening. Frankie will then join us at the Piedmont Civic Center for breakfast and will lead the ride out of Piedmont.  Frankie will not be rushing to finish the ride though. He plans to linger at the rest stops and meet all the folks that have taveled to Alabama to do the ride. He wants to help us raise funds for the Chief Ladiga Trail by encouraging a big turnout for 2008 Cheaha.  We also told Frankie about Rest Stop #3, which has something to do with his "not being in a big hurry to finish." :)
Don't forget all the activities at the downtown Noble Street Festival for the whole family on Saturday, May 3.  The Quilters of Gee's Bend will headline the Art exhibits and 15 restaurants will line the streets in the Red Diamond Restaurant Tour.  The McWane KidZone has mushroomed for 2008 with a huge NASCAR Expo, YMCA Baskeball, expanded art, and more. The JumboTron is back and a "crowd cam" has been addedd for 2008. We hope you will again be our guest in Anniston and Piedmont on May 2/3/4 weekend!
Arrive on Friday evening and enjoy a complimentary meal on the Roof of Animal
Medical Center---especially for Cheaha riders, their families and sponsors. 5:30 until....

Hi Alabama Folks,

If you needed a couple more reasons to come down to the Big Bend Cycling
Festival in Tallahassee, we've got a couple.

First, if you or your friends are sitting on the fence, and you are getting here
Friday, come to the race number pickup and registration from 5-9pm. There will
be no
late fee and you won't have to stand in line on Saturday. We'll have your
waiver already filled out as well, our juniors will be selling drinks to
raise money, and there'll be a "Blessing of the Bikes," and a bike film
festival.

Second, as part of the festival, we're having a swap meet on Saturday. It
will run from 3-6 (or maybe later), so bring your spare parts and go home
with a bit more gas money. We'll provide a place to sell the stuff, and
if you don't have time, and don't have too much stuff, we'll have someone
who'll sell it on consignment, or watch it while you race. Also, we have
a community bike shop which would be glad to accept your donations, to
help build low cost bikes for the less fortunate in Tallahasee.

Bring folks with you and enjoy downtown Tallahassee, and downtown Quincy
(the only SE road race with a downtown finish), and get more info on all
of this at http://www.bigbendcyclingfestival.org

I hope to see you tomorrow or Saturday.

Ron Skarin is a friend of mine who raced in the pursuit during the Munich Olympics.  He then went to Belgium to race with a pro-team.  His old team mate who had arrived a year earlier handed him a bottle of amphetamines his first day.  He said that is what it takes to be competitive in European racing.  He also said that you want that Gold medal so bad that it is easy to cross the line.

He was also, as an assistant coach, with Grewal and those guys at the airport in LAX when the blood doping story broke.  He said it was a really bad time, when a whole team looks at each other and says "what did we just do".  The guy had lots of stories like that.

Ron Skarin (above) was inducted for the Modern Post 1975 Competitors Category. Skarin won 10 national titles, a Gold medal at the 1975 Pan American Games, and participated in the 1973 World Championships, the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games. Skarin was also the USCF Director in 1979-1980 and an assistant coach at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Asked what it meant to be inducted into the Hall of Fame Skarin responded that “old cyclists don’t die, they just get recycled. That’s what I’m doing here.“ The double Tour of Somerville winner, along with his wife Sue and his parents mingled with the crowd telling stories of his Teledyne Titan, one of the first production titanium bicycles, and thought at the time to be the secret to his success. This reporter thinks his positive attitude was his real secret. “Any race you’ll have ridden you beat those that don’t have the guts to show up and race,” said Skarin.

Shimano’s own Wayne Stetina, also a 1999 Hall of Fame Inductee, introduced Skarin, but admitted he didn’t vote for him. The two friends and former roommates at times during their careers were also fierce competitors, having traded national titles several years in a row. Stetina went on to say how happy he was to see his friend inducted. Skarin’s first race was a ten-mile time trial and he placed in the top ten. I thought this was really great, said Skarin. “Cycling provided focus for my life. It helped me form an identity.”

Along with Skarin’s track and road accomplishments, he got involved in the sport of Human Powered Vehicle racing and is the current World Record Hour holder on a Tandem HPV. (he went 46 mph—damm that’s fast) Skarin was also instrumental in developing hard shell helmets with Bell. “I saw the value of protecting what’s between my ears” said Skarin. After retiring from cycling, Skarin wanted to promote the sport for young cyclists. According to Skarin this can be done by always including public and junior races. Cycling is a sport, a story of hope, makes it fun he added. Much like his father supporting him; Skarin is out supporting his son Matt at junior races and doing a bit of racing himself. The two recently completed a stage race together.

Somehow grace intervened for me. Should I have ever been headed for classic or Tour podiums surely I would have entered the full-blown ’roid ranks. Dangle Liège or Paris glory in my face and there is no question both feet would have crossed that line. No one wants to hear that but it is very true. Whether it be the blood of bulls or goats, I would have drunk from that cup in a heartbeat for any measure of that glory.

Sounds good.
I may ride at lunch too.
The weather, hard to call today.
Tomorrow looks for sure a wash-out.
A good hard ride today is definitely needed.

I'm awful jealous of those who have been racing and training
so much recently.

Here, here!  It was a great workout, and it was good to see everyone sticking with it and putting forth so much effort.  That is how one gains fitness.  Regrouping mid-race was also helpful, especially the pointers that Steve gave us on bike handling.

I really had a great time. Hope everyone else did as well.

We wound up re-starting the race after 30 minutes because it was completely blown apart. I wasn't even sure who was leading at that point.

Next Tuesday is Williams Elementary.

I'm delinquent. Randall continued his cat 5 season dominance finishing 2nd in the crit and 1st in the road race. Craig and Hugh finished 2nd and 3rd in the Masters road race. If you race, please be sure to list your team name as: Spring City Cycling Club (SCCC). That's the way it's listed on thge USA Cycling web site (http://www.usacycling.org/clubs/index.php?club=3713).

As the Alabama Cycling association moves forward, we are hoping to establish a statewide points series. As I review the results from each race, I see an incredible variation in team names listed for riders. This is especially the case when there are multiple teams affiliated with a single organization. Not picking on them,
but for Tuscaloosa, as an example, I saw:
BBC
Bookoo - BBC
Bookoo - Birmingham Bicycle Company
Tristar
Medplan
Tristar-Medplan
and even more.
I am asking for you to establish a standard for your team, I don't care what it is, and just try to be consistent with it.

Back in the day, if the Tuesday training race was rained out, we would race the same course on Thursday. Since the Stars are playing Thursday, if we're rained out tonight, the plan isto have the training race Thursday night at Williams Elementary.

Chance of rain is 50% this afternoon. Maybe we will get lucky.

I hate to be pessimist, but...
Weather is looking a bit iffy for Tuesday night ride.

Stars have home stand opening on Thursday night otherwise
might make sense to postpone, given that no nearby racing
on Sat. this week.

Cuba RR Sunday, of course.

When does the Thursday night at Wms. Av. ride start?

Since it is so nice out now, I think we should ride now.

Back in the day, if the Tuesday training race was rained out, we would race the
same course on Thursday. Since the Stars are playing Thursday, if we're rained
out tonight, the plan isto have the training race Thursday night at Williams
Elementary.

Av. ride start?

It sounds like people like getting dropped on the Williams Elementary ride. So, we'll plan to keep the same format and extend the course as the days grow longer.

Here are the short-cuts I know of:

If you're dropped early (Zierdt, right on 6th St, right on Wall-Triana, left on Beadle), then you can turn right on Swancott instead of going straight and beat the group to Rockhouse.

If you're dropped on Wall or the hills, then you can turn right on Rabbit Lane before the hills or right on Henderson (kind of hidden over the top of the first hill) and beat the group to Rockhouse.

If you're dropped on Rockhouse, Swancott or Pryor, you can turn right at the access road insted of left to Mooresville and beat the group to the Greenbriere interchange.

If you're dropped on the access road, County Line, Boeing Blvd or Wall-Triana, then you can turn left at Beadle and beat the group to Zierdt.

Agree, A & B probably won't work out.

However, it only makes sense for those who will fall into the laughing
group to work together after they lose contact. We can avoid the problem
of falling off a random times, and being scattered, if we agree to this
beforehand. Some of us need help even with the short cuts to make it
back on.

Hopefully I'll make it out next week. Then we'll see who really is the
weakest.
