Last details for the time trial are below. If you think you might participate,
hit
Reply (NOT reply all...) and let me know (it's not a commitment, it's only so we
have
some idea how many to plan for).
[sorry about the multiple posts earlier in the week, I was having server
problems]
---> We still need 3 volunteers to help.
WHAT: Swancott Time Trial - Monthly Series
WHEN: Saturday, November 11, riders start at 2pm (be there by 1:45)
WHERE: Corner of Swancott and County Line Road
CONTACTS: amelia.baldwin@... [256-520-9494] and
gretchen.everts@...
WHO: You! We encourage all riders of all levels to participate to measure their
progress. This is not a race for prizes, just personal goals. It's a race
against the
clock!
--- Volunteers Needed! ---
Want to help? Please! We could use a couple of course marshalls (more for
safety than
anything else!) and someone to help with standing starts (i.e. hold the seat
post so
they can start upright already clipped in). These are EASY jobs! Please email
us if
you want to help. Your help will be greatly appreciated! If you want to ride
AND help,
then we can arrange that as well through an early ride (we are going to do one
for us,
too).
--- WEATHER ---
The time trial will be cancelled only if the weather is REALLY bad. Current
forecast
says the thunderstorms will be over in the morning on Saturday and it will be in
the 50s
and a bit windy. Just lovely weather for a time trial! :o)
---The Details---
On November 11, we will have our first monthly time trial. It will start from
the corner
of Swancott and County Line Road (Swancott Grocery and Deli) beginning at 2pm.
Come out and pit yourself against the clock. Our plan is to repeat the time
trial each
month (at least until Spring) so you can measure your progress over time. This
is not a
race against other cyclists. No award will be given to the fastest finishers.
This is
a race against the clock to measure personal fitness. All cyclists are welcome
and
encouraged to participate.
--- COURSE ---
The course is 9 miles and includes Swancott, Rockhouse Rd, Henderson Rd and Wall
Street.
It is mostly well-paved and traffic is very light. Please take note of the
left turn
onto Rockhouse and take particular care there. The course is marked for the
time trial
using GREEN paint and a map is available. Here is a preview:
http://www.webprofessor.org/bikealabama/maps/limestone-swancott9miletimetrial.gi\
fhttp://www.webprofessor.org/bikealabama/maps/limestone-swancott9miletimetrial.pd\
f
The course has eight 90 degree turns. Two of these are actual left turns from
one road
to another (Swancott to Rockhouse and Rockhouse to Henderson). Please take
care! The
others are just 90 degree bends in the roads (not intersections) like we see in
rural
Limestone County all the time. According to bikely.com the route has about 170
feet of
climbing (and the same of descending of course).
--- LOCATION ---
Mr Bibb, of the Swancott Grocery and Deli, has graciously agreed to let us use
his store
as our starting point. Please do not park at the store (except volunteers). We
do not
want to not to block access to the store. Also, please do not park on Swancott
west of
County Line (so as not to block the view of cyclists on the course) or anywhere
directly
on the time trial course roads. Riders need to plan to park away from the start
(see
below) and do a warm up ride to the starting area. PLEASE DO GO INTO THE STORE
AND GIVE
Mr Bibb YOUR BUSINESS.
--- SIGN UP ---
Show up at the store by 1:45 to sign up. There is NO COST. Cyclists will start
in the
order they sign up. If we have a big turnout, cyclists will wear numbers (which
will be
provided) and turn them back in at the finish. We will have a normal time trial
start,
with a cyclist starting every minute until all are out on the course. Timing
will be
provided. Results available shortly after the last rider finishes. Results
will be
tabulated over the series so you can track your progress. Results will be
emailed to
participants and/or posted on the web.
--- PARKING ---
You may park at St Andrews Primitive Baptist Church or at New Hope Cumberland
Presbyterian Church. Both churches have graciously given permission for use of
their
parking lots. Please be parked and off the course by 1:45pm.
St Andrews is a bit further on Swancott, take the right turn up the hill right
after the
store - you know, the "church on the hill" on the left - but please park BEHIND
the
church, not in front because of potential choir practice.
NEW HOPE is on Wall Street near the end of the time trial course. From the
store, go
straight west (i.e. don't take the right turn up to St Andrews) and after the
two 90
curves in the road, New Hope is on your left with a big parking lot in front.
--- SAFETY ---
Safety is primary, and safety should never be sacrificed for seconds. Everyone
will
wear a helmet. All cyclists will obey all traffic rules. We have a good
reputation in
this neighborhood and we want to keep it that way. :o)
Take particular care in making the left turn from Swancott to Rockhouse.
Oncoming
traffic has, of course, the right of way. Ride smart and be safe.
--- RULES ---
Safety is most important.
Helmets required.
Do not cross the centerline at any time for any reason.
You may pass a cyclist on either side as long as you don't cross the
centerline.
No drafting.
--- DIRECTIONS ---
To get there, from I-565, take Wall Triana Hwy south until it becomes Boeing
Blvd
(continue straight) and then dead ends into County Line Road. Turn left on
County Line
Road. Swancott Store is on your right at the next intersection (Swancott Rd). To
park
and ride, turn right at the store, take the next right (also Swancott) and park
behind
St Andrews church which is on the left at the top of the little hill. Be on
your bike
at the store at 1:45pm.

Barry,
I've been using Gmap for years, but bikely is so much better. The elevation
profile is a
bit weird but much more informative than gmaps. Both are based on google-maps,
strangely enough.

Thanks to Jack and Mike for stepping up to teach the seminar and for putting together the materials. Their experience is an invaluable asset to the club. We might do a condensed version of the class session at future meetings. We've also had requests for a more basic "Cycling for Dummies - 101" class for the greenest new riders.
Over 35 riders turned up for Saturday's class with skills and experience levels covering the entire range of speeds. Runners, triathletes and regular roadies all said they picked up something from the class. Many said they had never ridden in a group or had never thought of the benefits of using the draft and knowing the direction of the wind at all times.
Based on the turnout and response, we WILL be doing more of these in the future.
Thanks to everyone who turned up on Saturday.

just wanted to drop a bit of a note of thanks to Mike, Morgan and Jack for taking time to teach the road riding skills course sat. it was very informative and a lot was learned on road form, bumping and recovery and how wind direction affects the set up and rotation of pacelines.. it was great to see such a large turn out for such an important class..
Great day to be you, sure you'll have a good one.
With envy -

Heath Goebel was chosen as Race Division Director for 2007.
Jamie Miernik volunteered to be Race Director for the 2007 Races--she will coordinate organization; be responsible for permits (city, police, USCF, insurance, etc.).
Publicity Committee: James Dawson, Davis Blackwelder, Missy Goebel
James Dawson and Mike Callahan will take training to be race officials.
Sponsorship responsibilities: Toyota-Jamie Miernik; Wachovia-Josh Whitehead; Jerry Damson, Bentley Cadillac(?), and Chandler-May-Heath Goebel; Women's Sports, TV, and radio-Jacqy Stone
Venue: Morgan Andriulli, Josh Whitehead, Jim Everts
Children's Race: Jamie Miernik; Missy Goebel
Race Organization and Format: Mike Steffen; Jack Bice
Sponsors' Package: Amelia Baldwin; Morgan Andriulli; Robin Densen. Jamie to e-mail sponsor package to Davis.
Sharon Baylor expressed a desire for a Time Trial Series: Davis Blackwelder to organize (with permission from Heath, of course) and recommends a Saturday morning series on the northern I-565 access road between County Line Road and Greenbriar Road.
March Training Series: Jim Everts; James Dawson; Heath Goebel
Jamie proposed Alabike & Safe Routes to Schools as the beneficiary of the races, with the general feeling from those of the race division present that this would be a good “community involvement” and “goodwill” recipient to present to potential sponsors.
The idea of combined sponsorship for 4 Hills, the race series, and the SCCC century was proposed by Heath. Sharon Baylor will take this up with the Officers.
We have about $1500 - $2000 in the bank. Mike Steffen to confirm.
Missy Goebel on the hook to host next Race Division Meeting (race planning meeting)?
Great weather tomorrow so I'm riding to Skyline from my house on

Does riding in a crowd make you nervous? Do you get dropped on group rides, even though they aren't going so fast? Do you get hollered at on the Tuesday/Thursday rides and you don't know why?
Then you need to attend the Spring City Cycling Club Group Ride Clinic. You'll learn the techniques needed to ride safely and confidently in a pack of cyclists?
The clinic will be broken into a 1-hour classroom session followed by a 2-hour on-the-road practice session.
Bring a good road bike and enough supplies for a two-hour ride
This class is designed to build confidence and fluidity while riding with a group, will help you save energy on long rides, and, most importantly, help riders avoid and prevent accidents. Both experienced and new riders can benefit from this clinic. Invite a friend! Cyclists of all abilities and interests are invited.
Location: Hampton Cove Middle School, 261 Old Highway 431, Hampton Cove Directions: From Huntsville, follow US 431/Governors Drive east over Monte Sano Mountain to Hampton Cove. Left onto Old 431 at light. Go east on Old 431 past Publix to first light. Turn into the drive and follow it past fire station to Hampton Cove School. The Middle School is in the right wing of the building.

Even though I was the only participant last week, it was still fun. I found a quick 15-mile loop around the
city that misses most of the traffic. This could be like the Wheeler Refuge Ride except without the bugs, mud
and threat of a deer hit.
So, I’m doing it again Wednesday at 5:30 pm.
What:Wednesday Urban Assault Ride.
When:5:30 PM
Where:Eternal Flame at Big SpringPark
on Williams Avenue,
across from the Holiday Inn.
Route:Clinton,
6th Avenue,
Triana, Johnson Road,
Marathon Route,
Four-Mile Post, Garth, Drake, Whitesburg, Downtown, Done.
Length:15-ish miles.Give it an hour or so.
BRING LIGHTS!
Apres’ Ride:We can hit House of Brews on the square or Kenny Mango’s next
door. Hey!Mango?Where have we heard THAT name before? This could be really fun!
OK, if I get her drift, Karen Mango not against bikes, but cyclists look stupid, ride dangerously, get in her way, selectively obey the laws and are a danger to children.
You should have gone to the Back Country brewery (Frisco), BEST EVER! Looks
like an awsome trip.

A small group of SCCC members spent a week in the mountains of
Colorado last July, road riding thru some spectacular country. I
finally completed a trip report, mostly as a memory thing, but

It’s a very cool route and the ride
raises funds for the Two-Wheel Trail bike route project around LimestoneCounty. It will be a completely signed and mapped
bike tour route around the entire county on very nice roads.
Unfortunately, Jamie and I cannot be there
this weekend, but we’re sending in a donation anyway. They are only a few thousand bucks away
from their fundraising goal.

Metric Century - Athens, AL - October 14, 2006
Here’s a great little fall metric
century from Athens, AL
in LimestoneCounty on October 14. It follows
some of the best roads in the county that are popular with area cyclists.
The ride is a fundraiser for LimestoneCountyParks and Recreation, which is raising
matching funds to qualify for a $500K TEA-LU grant to create signed bike and
motorcycle touring routes all around LimestoneCounty. I’m
partial to this project, since we (AlaBike) helped them plot the routes and
prioritize the phasing of a full-scale plan to connect the county with over 140
miles of signed bike routes and fresh asphalt where needed. The Mayor of
Athens, county commissioners and the other municipalities in the county are all
signed onto the project because they know that the Two-Wheel Trail will bring
tourists to LimestoneCounty to take in their
great countryside, scenic two-lane roads and abundance of good BBQ
joints.
For more information, contact James Rich, AthensParks
and Recreation, 256 233-8725, or JRich@....
Please distribute the attached PDF flyer to
your bike club’s e-mail list, web site guru or newsletter editor.
This is a great little ride to wrap up the fall century season. If
you cannot make the ride, send in a donation. It will go to help LimestoneCounty remake itself into a cycling
destination.

I am cycling to the campout this year. The rest of my family has schedule conflicts and will not be able to meet me at the campout. Therefore, if any of you have space to bring me and my gear back from the campout please let me know. Obviously, I would need for you to carry my tent and gear to the campout also. I'll split the cost of the gas both ways.
Davy and Charlie, I know you think I should just cycle home. However, I don't have the vacation time or the experience for that. :-)
The October SCCC meeting will be Monday evening at the El Camino Real
restaurant on University Drive,
west of Jordan lane, between Arby’s and Animal Medical Clinic.Time:7 PM.(Arrive before 6:30 PM to order dinner.)
Program – City Planner James Moore will unveil
the new, soon-to-be published City Bike Map.
James will be fielding questions
about the map, its distribution and future plans, as well as show two short
cycling videos produced by the city of Huntsville.
NOTICE! NOTICE! NOTICE! NOTICE! $10 Mandatory Minimum at El Camino Real
El Camino Real
now requires a $10/head minimum for the use of its room. The SCCC’s
per head spending rate is too low for management to justify keeping extra
people on to refill water and chips for thirty people. This means that if 30 people show up,
but only 15 spend $10 or more, the SCCC will get hit with a bill for the
difference ($150).
El Camino will offer a special $10
deal for three menu items and a soft drink. Please do
us and the restaurant a favor and make meal plans for the meeting. It will build goodwill for SCCC and make
our hosts happy. It is also a very
good deal for the typical rate for a large group at any restaurant. It will also show that cyclists are not
the cheap, flinty, bunch of eccentrics.
It's Flavio Ortigao's birthday this weekend so we're having a special Fast Breakfast Ride on Sunday. We'll be leaving at the regular 8 AM-ish launch time from Mullins Restaurant on Andrew Jackson Way and going a little extra distance, probably around 55-60 miles.
Rides Goddess Sharon Bayler will lead the 43-mile version of the FBR starting at 9 AM at Mullins Restaurant. Average pace will be 15 mph or so.
Afterwards, everyone is invited to a full-on spaghetti feast at our house at 1010 Humes Avenue at 1 PM. Flavio will prepare his special Bolognese sauce and we can can all kick back in the sun on the patio. Bring a side or an adult beverage if you want, but it is not necessary.
Regardless whether or not your ride, if you are interested in joining us this Sunday, please RSVP to this e-mail or call so we can calculate how many cubic yards of sauce to prepare.
Eat a light breakfast and bring an appetite. We'll see you Sunday.
Details:
Flavio's Fast Birthday Ride - 55 or so Miles.
Start: 8 AM, Mullins Restaurant on Andrew Jackson Way, Five Points.
