Of course the positive A test result is for high levels of testosterone.  Not an unexpected result considering Landis has the biggest balls in the peloton

So, you want to win the Tour de France?  How about a 140 km breakaway?  Then you better be prepared to crank out these kinds numbers….  And have some big brass cajones (or ovaries, if that is the case).

Cyclists,

Saturday is our umpteenth annual Summer Picnic at Valerie Connaughton’s pad in bucolic, historic Mooresville, AL.  Her house is on Market Street, immediately off of Old, Old Highway 20.  The picnic will be at the community pool, immediately behind her house.  Festivities start at about 1:00 to 1:30 PM after the morning rides.  (See Below.)

Directions:  To get to Mooresville, take the Mooresville Exit from I-565.  Head south towards the river.  When Mooresville Road T’s into ancient, unused Highway 20, turn right, then left onto Market Street.  Valerie’s house is first on the right.

SCCC will provide BBQ pork and chicken, beans, slaw, rolls, HUSHPUPPIES, plates, cups, utensils, ice, soft drinks, some side dishes, shade tents, fans, and (hopefully) all of the TT coverage from the TdF.  (Provided the UCI does not disqualify Floyd Landis’ balls as an illegal performance enhancement or aerodynamic aid.)

Feel free to bring beer, desserts, or other side dishes (plus a means to serve it and deter flies.).

Bring a hat, swim trunks, sunscreen, chair and I high tolerance for heat.  It gets hot on that pool patio.

Rides of varying lengths and speeds will begin at Valerie’s house beginning at 7:30 AM:

Ride-A-Metric Training Ride - Nuke Plant – 40miles, 12 – 14 pace. 8:30am start time. Ride Leader Andy Brown, 604-9219

Nuke Plant Ride – 54 miles, 15-17 pace. 8:30 AM start time. Can you say FLAT? Ride Leader Sharon Bayler, 830-5956, sharon@...

Hostess Ride – Mooresville - Elk River – Athens – 67 miles, peppy no hammer pace (18-20). Hilly between 28 and 39 miles, no steep climbs. Start time: 7:30am. Stops: 2 (Elk River and Athens). Ride Leader and Party Hostess Valerie Connaughton, 337-1947, valeriec@...

We’ll see you in Mooresville!

We had a nice turnout for the Wednesday night ride last week, so I’m doing it again tonight.

It starts downtown at the park across from the Holiday Inn on Williams Avenue.   Since daylight can be an issue, we will launch as close to 5:30 PM as possible.

We’ll try to keep it rolling so we can keep the total time under two hours.

The Sunset Loop is 30 miles and includes a climb over Cecil As(s)hburn (Four Mile Post for us old-timers who have lived here since ‘03.)

We had some distress last week when two riders did not realize that Four-Mile Post is Cecil Ashburn.  They required some talking to get them to consent to doing the “unannounced” Climb.  So here it is:  There is a one-mile climb on this ride.  It is steep, but it is only one mile.  On a bad day, my mother can do it in about 12 minutes.

Anyway, please come out tonight and enjoy an alternative to the Tuesday/Thursday flatland hammer-fests.  I’d love to get enough folks to have both a fast group and a regular group.

See y’all at 5:30.

Crack open a cold one.  Mike Olheiser just called from the road to spread the word and thank everyone for the support he received from the club and friends in Huntsville.

He won the Master’s national championships in an epic breakaway during a driving rainstorm in Seven Springs, PA.  He got away early in a break.  The break fragged and he beat the chasers in by over a minute.  There’s a good picture and a short write-up of him posting up at the USA Cycling web site.

http://www.usacycling.org/news/user/story.php?id=2400

Congrats to Mike!  Let’s see if he can do the same thing in Salzburg, Austria.

He said he’ll try to hook up for beers later in the week.  The actual celebration will have to wait as he will be out of town racing every weekend until September.

Cyclists,

The Tuesday-Thursday flatland hammer fests have grown tiresome and tedious.  As an antidote to this stale condition, I'm adding a new weekday ride from downtown to liven things up while the light is still good.  It will also give us downtowners a ride that does not require a 15 mile drive during rush hour.  As a bonus, the hills will discourage the triathletes and the knuckle draggers from starting a testosterone fight or gutter sweeping.

Here's the deal:

Location:  Meet at Big Springs Park downtown.  Park across from the Holiday Inn or nearby.

Time:  Launch at 5:30 PM

Route:  North up Meridian, Chase, Chase Industrial Park, Old Gurley Road, Wall Road, Dug Hill, King Drake, Cauldwell, Old Big Cove, Four-Mile Post, Garth, Drake, Whitesburg, Downtown.

Length:  30 miles

Pace:  Let's keep it under two hours.  Approximately 1:45 for 30 miles.  Lollygagging will produce darkness issues.

See y'all Wednesday.

Morgan

Join us at the July SCCC Meeting, Monday night (July 10) at 7 PM at El Camino Real on University Drive.

Since I failed to find a decent presenter for the July SCCC Meeting, Mike Bayler and I have come up with the First (and maybe last) Annual Tour de France Trivia Fun Night.  You will get the chance to win Fabulous Prizes and maybe some dough by purchasing squares in Mike’s Tour de France Random Chance Gordian Matrix or correctly answering a Tour de France Trivia Question.  Since the tour is currently in progress, the Grand Prize Winners will not be announced no earlier than July 22.

The game is  legally questionable, and as complex as two engineers can make; but it is fun and challenging.  So bone up on you TdF factoids and join us at Camino Real Monday night.

Directions:  El Camino Real, University Drive.  West of Jordan Lane between Arby’s and Animal Medical Clinic.

Time:  Monday, July 10 at 7 PM.  Arrive before 6:30 if you plan to order dinner.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE TOUR DE FRANCE PARTY

RSVP is NOT REQUIRED to attend the party.
However, if you plan to come, PLEASE LET US KNOW BY JULY 13 so we can have a

PLEASE BRING A SIDE DISH, SALAD, OR DESSERT (see below)

Tom and Kathy’s 4th Annual Tour de France Party

When: Saturday, July 15th, starting around 2 pm.

Where: Our house, 1211 Deborah Drive, Huntsville

<>Directions:  Take Memorial Parkway to Drake Avenue.  Go east on Drake
(toward the mountain) for 2 miles.  Take a left at the blinking
<>red light, going uphill.  (Imagine ending all of your bike rides
                 from home with this climb!)
Take the third right, Deborah Drive.
Our house is the 6th house on the left --tan painted brick, one story.
Lots of on-street parking available; there are a few spots at the top
of the driveway for the injured / disabled, if you can't climb up our
                    steep driveway.

Stage 13 (on July 15th) is a relatively flat stage (sorry, nothing but the prologue and time trials on the other Saturdays!) The route that day is
Béziers Méditerranée to Montélimar, a 230 km stage (longest stage of this year's Tour!)

No Lance, but come and root for Team Disco or your favorite pick for the first post-Lance T de F winner...

<>Come after one of the morning rides; you can shower here or dip in the pool to cool off.
If everything works out delivery-wise, we MAY have a hot tub operational by then as well.
(The "pool room" has undergone some modifications and is less "stuffy" with better ventilation!)
If you bring children, they MUST be supervised, especially with regards to the pool.
No lifeguard will be on duty.

Eat and watch the rainbow of jerseys pedal through
France (OLN rebroadcast of the morning coverage).

What to bring:

A salad, side dish or dessert.

A cushion if you’d like (limited chair/ couch seating).

Frosty adult beverages.

Mark your calendars for this Sunday Evening 5 to 8 PM.  Huntsville’s own Category 1 Master’s National Champ, Mike Olheiser is throwing a wine and cheese social at his humble abode on 1317 Ward Avenue in funky Five Points.   This is an informal fundraiser for Mike’s trip to the Master’s World Championships in Salzburg, Austria in August.

As a full-time trainer AND a nearly full-time racer, there is not much room in the Olheiser household budget for globe-hopping with a bike box.  This is our opportunity to help Mike wear the Stars and Stripes for the US, Huntsville and his hometown of Minneapolis.

Details:

Date:  Sunday, July 9

Time:  5-8 PM

Location:  1317 Ward Avenue.  (One block north of Pratt Avenue in Five Points.)

What:  Wine, Cheese, Conversation and Great Expectations

This Saturday is the 58-mile Coldwater-Delina ride.  It starts at the intersection of Old Railroad Bed Road and Highway 110 in Taft, TN.  Plan ahead.  It is a solid 30-minute drive from Huntsville.  This is one of my favorite places to ride because of the scenery and terrain.

Ride starts around 8 AM and involves about eleventy-dozen hills and one rest stop in Delina at 28 miles.  The temps will be completely torrid so the pace will be several notches above “lollygagging” so we can get home to the AC to watch tour coverage.

The average speed will probably fall below 17 MPH because of the numerous hills and my generally poor condition.

Mike Olheiser World Championship Fundraiser:

Huntsville’s own (via Minneapolis) Mike O. is headed to Austria in August to represent the good ol’ U.S. of A. at the Master’s World Championships.  He needs our support to help cover travel and lodging expenses for the trip.  Since Coldwater is one of his favorite training areas, it is a good place to pass the hat before and after the ride for donations.  So, if you do our ride, think about bringing a few extra bucks to help make sure our transplanted homeboy gets a ticket to The World Championships.

We’ll see ya’ll on Saturday Morning.

Cyclists,

I just got this message from our local Cat 1 National Champ, Mike Olheiser.  He’s secured a slot on the team going to the Master’s World Championships in Salzburg, Austria in August.  He needs some fundraising to cover travel and lodging expenses.  To help out with that, Mike is holding fundraiser event at his house at 1317 Ward Avenue in Five Points on Sunday, July 9 from 5-8 PM.  Mike has a nice place with a cool back yard, perfect for hanging out.

Put it on your calendar and come on down.  We all want Mike to be able to “represent” for the good ol’ US of A and Huntsville.

If you can’t make the party, I’m designating my July 8 Coldwater ride as an official World Championship Pass-the-Hat ride.  I’ll be collecting donations for Mike before, during and after the ride.  They proceeds will be applied towards lottery tickets so he can set up his own Pro Tour team with his Power Ball winnings.  (Just kidding.)

We’ll see you next weekend.

I emailed earlier about our 2 day Criterium and Roadrace in Sylacauga on
June 24th and 25th. Due to inability of USCF to provide officials, we have
had to cancel the road race portion and will put on the Criterium on the
24th. Please forward this notice to your friends please. We are sorry for
the inconvenience. We have combined our prizes to make the Criterium
better. You can still register at Active.com search for Chalaka or
register the day of the race.....

Cyclists,

I want to try something different for the next club meeting and I’m looking for a club member with a large living room and a very large television who is willing to host our July Meeting.

The meeting topic will be the Spring City Film Festival.  I figure we can watch Breaking Away or any of a number of very good cycling documentaries.

Any volunteers?

I got this from an old friend today. He makes a point that I agree with, I
told him I'd try and see that SCCC members saw it. I know that we, as
cyclists, have the legal right to use a lane. But even a squirrel has
sense enough to
know who loses when you get run over.

Subject: Ride Etiquette

In 30+ years of being an active cyclist I've done and seen some pretty
stupid riding behavior, but yesterday (06/07/06) on the way home from work I
witnessed a new low. I passed two cyclist riding side by side doing interval
training on Hobbs Island Rd. during rush hour. These guys weren't
oblivious to the
amount of traffic - they just didn't care. I pulled over at the yacht club
and tried politely and unsuccessfully to get them to stop so I could ask
them
if they were trying to die. After I got home, I went out in the front yard
and waited for these guys to come by to see if I could get their attention.
They were still riding two abreast and still doing intervals when they
passed by
(I live midway between S. Parkway and Hwy 431) and of course they ignored me
and the 8 - 10 cars/trucks stacked up behind them. This isn't the first time
I've seen blatant disregard for traffic by riders riding two abreast on two
lane, high-traffic, rural roads in the area but it was the most dangerous
example.

These kind of riders can raise more negative public awareness for cycling in
one afternoon than can be offset by a whole years worth of public awareness
campaigns by the rest of the cycling club. Every cyclist should be outraged
by this type of riding behavior since we have to share the road with the
drivers that these guys are p*ssing off. When I was active in the club, good
riding etiquette was widely practiced and handed down to younger or less
experienced riders/racers. We would have packs of 15-20 riders out
training and with a
simple shout out of "car back" we would be single file in just a few
seconds. Is the club still practicing this through the leadership of ride
captains,
experienced racers & riders, peer pressure, etc., etc.? You may feel like
I'm
over reacting on this but if these guys had been mowed over by a tandem axle
dump truck - every witness (and there would have been many) would have said
they had it coming. I don't want the driving population of Huntsville /
Madison County gunning for me or any other cyclist worse than they
already are. I
know there's not a lot any of you can do about this situation but I hope
you'll continue to stress to the local cycling community that each and every
rider has an obligation to ride courteously and responsibly.

Sincerely,

Bobby Weber

  Hello-

We've got all the details for our guest speaker in June all lined up!

On Thursday, June 22 Elk River Cycling in Fayetteville, TN will be hosting
a guest speaker that I thought your club would find interesting. Josh
Poertner is a design engineer from Zipp (www.zipp.com) and former Euro
racer. He will cover myriad topics, such as:

    - The truth about all things aerodynamic, and how everybody
manipulates things to convince you to buy stuff.
    - The truth about carbon fiber, and all the ridiculous myths exposed.

    - And finally, what it's really like living with and travelling with
the Euro pros and mechanics at the big races.

I'm writing to you to extend the invitation to you and your club members
to join us for a night of camaraderie, food and fun, and Q&A. The cost to
your club members will be $5 per person which will include food and a
drink.

If you can mention this to your members at your next meeting or by email
that would be great. I think everyone will really enjoy hearing Josh
speak.
