WHAT: Swancott Time Trial - Monthly Series
WHEN: Saturday, November 11 at 2pm
WHERE: Corner of Swancott and County Line Road
CONTACTS: amelia.baldwin@... and gretchen.everts@...
WHO: We are encouraging all riders of all levels to participate to measure their
progress. We especially encourage all the moderate riders to join us. This is
not a
race for prizes, just personal goals. It's a race against the clock!
|--- Volunteers Needed! ---|
Want to help? Please! We could use a couple of course marshalls (more for
safety than
anything else!) and someone to help with standing starts (i.e. hold the seat
post so
they can start upright already clipped in). These are EASY jobs! Please email
us if
you want to help. Your help will be greatly appreciated! If you want to ride
AND help,
then we can arrange that as well through an early ride (we are going to do one
for us,
too).
|---The Details---|
On November 11, we will have our first monthly time trial. It will start from
the corner
of Swancott and County Line Road (Swancott Grocery and Deli) beginning at 2pm.
Come out and pit yourself against the clock. Our plan is to repeat the time
trial each
month (at least until Spring) so you can measure your progress over time. This
is not a
race against other cyclists. No award will be given to the fastest finishers.
This is
a race against the clock to measure personal fitness. All cyclists are welcome
and
encouraged to participate.
COURSE: The course is 9 miles and includes Swancott, Rockhouse Rd, Henderson Rd
and
Wall Street. It is mostly well-paved and traffic is very light. Please take
note of
the left turn onto Rockhouse and take particular care there. The course is
marked for
the time trial using green paint and a map will be available if necessary. Here
is a

The course has eight 90 degree turns. Two of these are actual left turns from
one road
to another (Swancott to Rockhouse and Rockhouse to Henderson). Please take
care! The
others are just 90 degree bends in the roads (not intersections) like we see in
rural
Limestone County all the time. Acccording to bikely.com the route has about 170
feet of
climbing (and the same of descending of course).
LOCATION: Mr Bibb, of the Swancott Grocery and Deli, has graciously agreed to
let us
use his store as our starting point. Please do not park at the store (except
volunteers). We do not want to not to block access to the store. Also, please
do not
park on Swancott west of County Line (so as not to block the view of cyclists on
the
course) or anywhere directly on the time trial course roads. Riders need to plan
to park
away from the start (see below) and do a warm up ride to the starting area.
SIGN UP: Show up at the store by about 1:45 to sign up. Cyclists will start in
the
order they sign up. If we have a big turnout, cyclists will wear numbers (which
will be
provided) and turn them back in at the finish. We will have a normal time trial
start,
with a cyclist starting every minute until all are out on the course. Timing
will be
provided. Results available shortly after the last rider finishes. Results
will be
tabulated over the series so you can track your progress. Results will be
emailed to
participants and/or posted on the web.
PARKING: You may park at St Andrews Primitive Baptist Church or at New Hope
Cumberland
Presbyterian Church. Both churches have graciously given permission for use of
their
parking lots. Please be parked and off the course before 2pm.
St Andrews is a bit further on Swancott, take the right turn up the hill right
after the
store - you know, the "church on the hill" on the left - but please park BEHIND
the
church, not in front because of potential choir practice. New Hope is on Wall
Street
near the end of the time trial course. From the store, go straight west (i.e.
don't take
the right turn up to St Andrews) and after the two 90 curves in the road, New
Hope is on
your left with a big parking lot in front.
WEATHER: The time trial will be cancelled only if the weather is REALLY bad.
SAFETY: Safety is primary, and safety should never be sacrificed for seconds.
Everyone
will wear a helmet. All cyclists will obey all traffic rules. We have a good
reputation in this neighborhood and we want to keep it that way. :o)
Take particular care in making the left turn from Swancott to Rockhouse.
Oncoming
traffic has, of course, the right of way. Ride smart and be safe.
RULES:
Safety is most important.
Helmets required.
Do not cross the centerline at any time for any reason.
You may pass a cyclist on either side as long as you don't cross the
centerline.
No drafting.
