Sad news.
Dan Patelson, GT5 VW Beetle and Datsun 1200 racer from NY succumbed to
cancer on March 30.
Dan's ever happy face will be missed from Mid-Ohio to Lime Rock to Moroso.
Anyone who would like his family's address can email me privately.

This just came from the SFR office about our opening double national Mar 20/
21:
Gathering of GT-5 Champions at Thunderhill National
In the history of the GT5 class, four Minis have won the SCCA National
Championship. On March 20, 2004, a Gathering of Champions will be held at
the Thunderhill Raceway Park Double National. For the first time ever, all four
past champion Minis will be racing in the same event.
With this being the last year for the GT5 class, it is appropriate that the S.F.
Region host this special event, since three of the champion cars call the S.F.
Region home. The fourth was built by local company Comptech, as a sister
car to the Fortech Mini. The driver's list reads like a Who's Who of Club
Racing: Doug Peterson, Joe Huffaker, Bill Cooper, Duane Davis, and Travis
Duder. Current drivers John Becker and Ward Barbour have all had time
behind the wheel of these famous cars.
The four Championship Minis in this race will be the 1984 Champion Fortech
Mini, driven by John Becker; 1986, 1989, 2003 Champion Fortech Mini,
driven by Doug Peterson; 1993 Champion Comptech/Richard Kraus Mini,
driven by Ward Barbour; and the Champion in 2000, 2001, and 2002, the
Huffaker Mini, driven by Joe Huffaker.
In addition, a Mini drive-around will take place at the noon break on Saturday.
Both racing and street Minis from several Northern California Mini Clubs will
participate in this Mini celebration.
The Thunder Hill Double National is the Left Coast race that I had picked to
attend this year, just for that reason.

From Mike Kearney:
There have been only four Minis that have won the SCCA GT5
National Championship.
On March 20,2004 at Thunderhill Raceway Park, all four will
compete in the same race for the first time at the S.F. Region
Double National. The car/driver lineup is: John Becker driving the
ex. Peterson winning Fortech Mini 1984, Road Atlanta. Ward
Barbour driving the ex. Richard Kraus Mini 1993 Road
Atlanta,Doug Peterson driving the Fortech Mini 1986,1989 Road
Atlanta 2003 Mid Ohio, Joe Huffaker driving the Huffaker Mini
2000,2001,2002 Mid Ohio.If anyone else can make
he race that would be great.
Thunderhill is the best club owned facility in the country and is
considered very much a drivers track.

This was picked up from the Production Racing site.
It is very sad news. Ron was always helpful to drivers in the NE
and at the Runoffs. He went out of his way to make things right if
you ever had problems with Goodyear tires. He's been a fixture at
races for as long as I can remember. Just a year ago we lost
Comp Tire Canada's Doug Fairchild and now Ron. Very sad
news indeed.
Joe
It was announced at the Northeast Division MiniConvention over
the weekend that Ron Stiller passed away last Thursday. Ron
has headed the Goodyear Tire operations in the Northeast and
at the Runoffs for over thirty years. He has been a valued friend
and advisor to drivers in the Northeast. He will be missed.
God speed, Ron
Terry
A new web site, dedicated to all five of the GT racing classes is
now up and running at:
http://www.gt-racecar.com
There are seperate discussion groups for each class plus one
for overall GT issues. There is room for video and photo files,
links and on-line poles. The larger base of five GT classes
makes it a more viable site for advertising from race suppliers.
Please check it out and sign up as a member. The next step will
be to move all of the GT4 and GT5 discussions over to the new
site.

Hi Barry,
I figure Peter is putting up the money for this deal to create a
strong market for the 1200s he has in stock. If he sold everything
10k is probably 10% of what he'll gross. Hope you guys are having a
good winter.
Thanks, Bob
It seems as if Nissan is returning to their roots and regaining
pride in a job well done...........not how much money was spent. It's
so easy to win with a thick wallet but another thing to drive like
the divine wind. Mike McClellan
--Let me see if I understand this. You can invest in the best car
that money can buy to win a race for Nissan and with the '99 body you
get $1000.00 But if you can win on a small budget with a 30 year old
body Nissan will pay $10,000. Plus pay others who didn't win the
runoffs. WAKE UP PETER YOUR DREAMING. Just kidding, but does this
seem fair to the racer who goes all out to win for Nissan?

There will be a GT5 Datsun 1200 Contingency Program in effect for the
2003 SCCA Runoffs. Although the details are not finalized, it looks
as if the top prize will be $10,000 for a Datsun 1200 to win the
Runoffs in GT5, with lessor prizes for finishing 2nd and 3rd. In
addition, ANY Datsun 1200 qualifying for and starting the GT5 race
will be eligible for a fiberglass panel of their choice, subject to
the stock on hand at the Runoffs.
This program is in addition to the generous contingency program
offered by Nissan.
Detail to follow within the month. Peter Zekert 314 291-8441 home or

Hi Rick,
I plan on running my B210 in GT5 later this summer. I belong to the
West Michigan Region and most of my racing is done at Gingerman and
Grattan although we have been looking at the schedule at Mid-Ohio too.

At this time I plan to be running the Opel in GT4 again. I do have
some other ventures going that could possibley interfere with that
plan but there up in the air right now.

Rick, I believe it went to Bill Underwood at Blind Hog Motorsports
in Atlanta, on behalf of a customer of his - possibly Clark Pierce.
Bill asked me if I needed anything from it, but I abandoned my idea
of a H Prod Starlet a couple of years ago. I think they planned to
rebody it as a Tercel. That was your Dad's old car, right?
By the way, I have some Starlet engine stuff in storage - blocks,
cranks, heads, etc., all stock. I haven't looked at it for a while,
and don't know the condition - this is Florida, so there is a good
likelihood of surface rust. If you know of anyone who needs
anything, let me know and I'll check my stuff more closely - I can
provide digital pictures.

hello rick
Yes my car is the comptech car you mention. I can run the same motor in both
classes the only diff is the weight and rim size.So for me to run either class
is very simple. As far as the pics could you email them to me at

Barry,
Dad's oil pump would not scavenge properly filling the motor full of
oil. We decided to at least start and watch the gauges closely. He
made 5 laps. A DNF but at least a start. Interestingly at idle the
pump was able to scavenge the oil out and back to the tank. We have
new impellers on the way.
