Sure, you can spend $50,000 building a tub GT
car, but a $50,000 tube car is going to beat it. Money
spent is not indicative of the potential of the car,
the physical aspects are. Sure, there have been some
really fast laps turned by tub cars that had a lot of
talent behind the wheel. But, all things considered, a
tube car will be faster than a tub car. I am just
trying to create a little more parity between two
different types of chassis' that run in the same class.

John, Mike Kearney told me that the biggest
performance difference between the (then new in 1985) tube
frame mini and their tub mini was that the tub car
wouldn't "hold" it's chassis setup weekend to weekend,
whereas the tube car did.
In recent times, Jeff Werth,
Jim Rauch and Randy Zimmer have all set high 1:41s or
1:42 at Mid-Ohio in tub cars. (Jeff and Jim in the
210, Randy in the Civic.) NO OFFENSE to anyone's
effort, but I don't see any tub cars with the $, engine
and setup package of the Huffaker Mini team. Ted
Wollesen, highest tub car WILL QUICKLY show you that his
car is a rough old tub car, no match in effort of the
top 5 finishers.
The Comp Board has been leary of
special rules for tub cars. Everyone of us CAN have a
tube frame car. Most of us in GT5 running tub cars
don't have the budget. If we did have the money, the
tub versus tube frame would not be AS big of a deal,
but still a consideration. Peter Zekert

One set of rules for all or you will end up with
a $50000 "tub" car that will win. I am a tub car
driver who enjoys the fact that I am able to even enter
my tub car in a GT class. If I had the money I would
be in a tube frame car and I think most would be!
Keep the rules as simply as possible and as new tube
cars are built the old ones will "trickle down" and
become much more affordable and still be competitive.
Please think of the reasons you run a tub car (I do
because that is all that I am willing to spend)and if you
really want to run a maxed out tub go production. Stable
rules make a strong class best example is FV. Brian

Doesn't the SCCA want the car count to go up?? I
have a tub Honda Civic, and intend to run in GT5
starting in 2001 (racing locally in Vancouver BC next
year). A weight break would be a good way to level the
playing field without affecting car count.

I'd love it! I certainly don't remember thinking about how Ted's car was
constructed during the Runoffs race. I just knew I was having much more fun than
I had had the rest of the week.

My point to this conversation is to determine if
there is a concensus to address the Comp. Board with a
proposal for a competition adjustment for tub GT cars. So
far we have a 5% weight reduction for semi-tubed
cars, and a 10% weight reduction for full tub cars. Any
other thoughts? We should still create a definition for
semi-tubed and full tub cars to dispell any confusion. Would
anyone object to a tub car giving Huffaker (or any other
mini Trans-Am car) a run for their money?

I agree completely with Chris. We're still racing
Minis almost 30 years after Leyland stopped paying
support. Like Keith says, find a group and dollar level
that you can have fun with. I don't expect my home
made tub chassis Mini to be as fast as the Comptech
engineered Fortech car, but a tub weight break would make me
happy.

I've heard a bit of complaining about how little
support Honda gives except the payout for wins....no
banquet, jacket, etc. I didn't see any Toyota jackets
either. The Nissan jacket and banquet were very nice, but
the money paid for winning a National race isn't
going to pay many bills (although it's certainly better
than the checks I never got from Austin or Healey).
Nissan was supporting John Olson, but he said he was
going to "retire" after the Runoffs this year. They
didn't exactly ask for volunteers to replace him, so I
wouldn't count on any free rides there. In other words,
count on your own dollars unless you have a sponsor.
The factories aren't going to pay the bills. And in
any form of motor sports, the more money you spend,
the faster the car should be. So....run what you
enjoy based on the dollars available.....at least
that's my 2 cents after more than 20 mis-spent years.
Now, how can the tub cars be made to be more
competitive in GT5? I'd go along with a weight rule for any
car that isn't a full tube frame. Maybe something
like 5% for a mixed setup, and 10% for a full tub?

We have been going through this for years. The
comp board will make some adjustments for tub cars,
unfortunatly usually not enough. I think it was made very
clear at the GT meeting at the runoffs, older cars are
not going to be dropped. You just have to come to
grips with the fact that a $6,500 car isn't going to
outrun a $50,000 car. Find a group you enjoy racing with
and have fun. Remember its a $3.00 piece of wood.
Someone has to keep the amature in amature racing.

We are kidding ourselves if we believe that there
would be any "manufacturer funded" cars in GT. Sure,
there are some serious contingency awards with some
makers, but no one is going to dump money into a car or
team based on ONE nationally televised event. THIS IS
STILL CLUB RACING! New cars are very welcome, but I
don't think the SCCA is moving to get rid of the "old"
ones. Who was on the entire podium this year? This is a
club with a lot of varied racers. What I am moving for
is just a little more parity between the tubes and
the tubs... or a class that the tubs can run in
without being choked to death or unstoppable in the
current Production ranks.

a trophy for highest finishing tub...Sorry, I
think that is wrong, espically since I raced a tube and
found it as competitive as a tube frame car...I have
come to the conclusion that SCCA does not want Old
tubs in any GT class. They should be in Vintage or
production. To see some of the old tub cars lapped 2 or 3
times at the Runoffs does not make for good TV
coverage. And the Manufactuers are not going to fund cars
that 10 and 15 years old. They want new stuff. The
trend is going to Tube frame and we all better realize
that very soon, or find somewhere else to race. As I
say this, I am currently shopping for a new car to
run in either 3/4/or 5. Which manufactuer offers the
best contigiency and help thru out the year. They are
probally the same ones that cover your ass at the comp
board meeting for rule changes because of there $$$
involvement

I would consider my car a tub frame even though
it no longer has a stock rear subframe. It still
uses stock suspension arms on modified mounting points
and has the cage welded to what's left of the
original floor.

I don't think that tube frame Minis
are any stiffer than mine but what they do have is
better weight distribution and most importantly,
optimized suspension geometry. All of the tube frame cars
use longer suspension arms mounted further inboard
than stock.

If you look at the Runoffs, only 8
of the 31 GT5 starters where tub cars. The highest
placed tub car was Ted Wollesen in 11th.

In the
past, the CB has been reluctant to have two sets of
rules in GT. But with the standard formula proposal,
there could be a factor determined for tub chassis and
front wheel drive.

If the recent history of E Production is any
indication, the infusion of GT2 and GT3 prepared cars has
significantly improved the numbers and the lap times (by a more
than a few seconds at some tracks). Some previous E
cars have been moved to F and G. If GT2 and GT3 cars
can transition easily (and some with a detuning), it
shouldn't really be a problem for GT5 tub cars.

I too would much rather keep tub cars in GT.
However, I believe there needs to be a competition
adjustment for the tub cars to maintain parity between the
tubes and the tubs. (Capulets and Montagues? nevermind)
There are a lot of very competitive tubs out there...
Patton's Tiger, any 911, etc. What about a 10% weight
reduction for cars run in "tub" form? Again, we (and the
C.B.) will need to "define" a tub car so as not to
create a gray area for potential protests.
~Lemke

I would very much prefer to keep the tub cars in
the GT classes. I also wouldn't object to some
rule(s) changes that may make them more competitive, such
as the one for Mini engine location change that has
been requested. As a more personal point of view, if
the rules stay as they are not (not the ones proposed
in the GT Summit) I would also like to see a Runoffs
trophy go to the highest finishing tub car, at least in
GT5.

With the current trend in the GT class to include
tube-frame cars only, that will leave the tub cars without a
class. An unofficial statistic is that almost half of
the current GT cars are indeed tubs. There are
several solutions that I will discuss in a moment, but
the first item that needs to be addressed is an
agreeable definition of what a "tub car" is. At what point
is a semi-tubed car considered a full-tube car? How
much OEM sheet metal must remain? You get the
idea.
Solutions:
1. Create new Production classes that allow more
brake and induction leeway.(B,C,D Production?)
2.
Classify existing GT cars into existing Production
classes. This will be very interesting based on the
current "limited prep" trend.
3. Modify existing
Production class rules to allow tub GT cars.
4. Other
ideas?......
I believe there are enough existing cars out there
to really move the Comp. Board into creating a class
for the soon to be defunct tub GT cars. I also
believe that no one is interested in "detuning" an
existing GT car to fit into an existing Production
class.
Lets hear it!
Respectfully submitted,
John S.

From the Speedvision web site, a discussion with
TV announcers Calvin Fish and Greg
Creamer.
k.

Calvin: The last production Mini came off the
assembly line, did
you say?

Us: Yes, the plant
in Birmingham [England], I think, has ended
production until they start building the new Minis next
year.

Greg: I thought the comment Dorsey made, with
fuel prices the
way they're going and the
performance of the Minis here, that
may start to become a
very popular little car again. Just with the
way
they've been running, what a great time for that kind of
a
result, at the only major race where those cars
run.

Calvin: In fact, you know it was Huffaker's
unique configuration
that won in GT5, with the
rear-wheel-drive Mini, which is his own
variation, of course.
Every other Mini in the field is
front-wheel-drive,
I believe. Certainly, on a clean track it
seemed
to have a distinct advantage here, so whether
they'll address that
with any weight penalties or try
and slow him down or speed the
others up for next
year, I'm not sure. That's always tough, when
you
get someone who goes out and does a great job in
designing and building a car and they come here with a
rocketship, whether you penalize him or let him have his
glory for
a couple of years.

Us: Right,
just like the Audis in the Le Mans Series or the
old
world-killer Mercedes-Benzes in the old German
Touring Car
series.

Calvin: Joe did a great
job today. He didn't put a wheel wrong all
day,
and his line was superb and he was doing a fabulous
job on
the track, so some of that is down to him
as well. He is a very
good driver also.

Greg: I think what we really saw today was the Runoffs
in terms
of the human element along with the
competition. Those stories
lived. It was just unreal.
Huffaker has four medals, but the one
that really
meant something was in this car that he designed.
He's been fighting that battle for a couple of years
and it finally
happens.

It would be great if all of the GT5 drivers on
line could post a short story of their week and race
at the Runoffs.

Here's my sorry
tale.

I went into the Runoffs full of confidence, having
turned a 1:44.1 at the end of the GT5 Invitational in
August. The plan was to pick up there and move forward
during the week and be somewhere in the top half of the
very strong field. In Monday's practice I did a 1:45
on old tires, 7th fastest in the session, I felt
pretty good.

In Tuesday's qualifying some
mysterious problem caused the motor to stop halfway through
the session. It seemed like the transmission was
locked up. Wednesday morning we pulled the engine and
looked at the transmision, drop gears and diff. We
didn't see anything wrong and with the help of the
Kopley, Phenix and Maloney crews, got the car back
together for qualifying at 2:30 pm. After 3 laps the left
axle pulled out of the CV. Based on my Tuesday time I
slipped back to 20th.

We changed the axle and
hoped that Thursday morning would be dry with one last
shot at qualifying. It poured rain an we didn't go
out.

The start of the race was so slow that we where
stopped in the tenth row when the green flag came out.
Darryl Casey and Mike Alexander got great starts and
shot by on the inside. I was in a better place going
into Madness and got past them and Ted Wollesen. Bob
Tarzwell had driven into Chris Kopley and Kopley's
bodywork was flapping just in front of me. I was in 17th
chasing Jay Bivins and Chris Fox with Wollesen on my
tail. Bivins was all over the place and Wollesen caught
me looking, going into Thunder Valley and passed me
on the inside.

Next lap at the end of the
straight the axle popped out of the CV again and I parked
it in the grass. I was very disapointed not to have
been part of the great race that Ted Wollesen and Cris
Fox had for the 10th spot.

The car drove every
lap of every race this year. It waited for the
Runoffs to start acting up. Next year we will have Jack
Knight axles. Thanks to Ned Beman for all his help and
support.

The GT-5 Race was a good one, Huffaker and
Peterson ran away at the start, but the battle for third
was good. Jack Baumgardner came from 10th after fall
two spots at the start to take the 3rd place podium
slot from Andre Zawislak.

Brad Lewis said that Gilcrease, Lopshire, maybe
Beck broke engines. Camilleri broke a CV or ball
joint. Burke breaks stuff every session. No word on
Wollenson. Rain has threatened but sessions were dry. Shipp
has broken "little things" each session.

In 1997 the GT5 racing community tragically lost
Mary Wollesen in a racing accident. In an effort
to keep her memory and alive, Fortech and Seven
Enterprises created a trophy.

The Mary Wollesen
Inspirational Award is presented each year at the SCCA Runoffs.
Anyone
involved with the GT5 class as a driver, owner,
crew member, club
official or builder is eligible
for the award. Each year the winner will be chosen by
a vote of their
peers. Ballots will be
distributed at the Runoffs and accepted up to the
presentation date.
The winner of the award will
demonstrate some of the many qualities that we admired in
Mary.
Generosity, perseverance and good humour. The
award could go to person who makes an
outstanding
contribution to the class and sport or to a person who
perseveres to put together an
outstanding effort over
the racing season.
Please consider who you think
should receive trophy for 1998 and return this ballot to
Mike Kearney
at the Huffaker Racing garage before
Friday October 9.
The trophy will be presented at
the COMO/Seven Enterprises BBQ Friday evening outside
of the
Huffaker garage.
If you can, please
come to the BBQ for the presentation and some
refreshments.
