So if anyone saw the ALMS race from Trois Riveries over the
weekend, I had quite a little bump in the Viper down at turn 1, I
arrived at my braking point, about the 100 marker at around
140mph, when I stood on the brakes I was greeted by the
reassuring feel of a great brake pedal, unfortunately the next
thing I felt was a most decidedly unreassuring blam
accompanied by the pedal collapsing to the floor, leaving my
speed very unabbreviated. The left upper control arm broke and
took the corner off the car, including the brake line. The car
continued on into the barrier, thankfully a very deep tire wall. It
seemed like an eternity from the little bang to the big bang, my
last thought was how happy I was to have my HANS on. The first
thought after the sudden stop was that it was probably safe to
open my eyes again and wow does my pelvic bone hurt, you
can't appreciate how much work that anti-sub belt does until you
really use it. The applause from the crowd threw me off a bit
when I got out, that was really a strange feeling. Anyway, I want to
highly recommend the HANS to any of you that don't presently
have one, other than just a bit of soreness, I actually feel quite
good, I have less in the way of back, neck and shoulder pain
than I did back in '98 when I crashed the Spit at Road Atlanta in
the rain at turn 11, and this hit was WAY bigger. PLEASE call
Hubbard Downing and order your HANS, I see now that they
have a $975 unit, it's worth much more, trust me.
