First, we'd like to once again congratulate those who came out and competed at
the Gold Rush Mother Lode expedition race. It was our first foray into
directing a multi-day race, it went very well, and it we will do it again
sometime.
We have some changes for 2010. First we will be moving the Gold Rush 24 Hour
Adventure Challenge from our traditional November date to August 28-29, with
check-in on Friday the 27th. This is three weeks before the Desert Winds
Expedition Race, making it a perfect tune-up for that event.
The Gold Rush Summer Challenge is moved up to June 5th. It will be similar to
past years. It is always tough to win but not to difficult for less experienced
teams to finish. This year we plan to place more focus on introducing new people
to Adventure Racing at the Summer Challenge.
Both the Gold Rush 24 Hour Adventure Challenge and the Gold Rush Summer
Challenge will be part of the Checkpoint Tracker points series in 2010.
Please put these dates on your race calendars.

I bought a new bike and replaced my hydraulics with the BB7 mechanical and
was more than happy with them. Reason my previous bike had hydraulics and I
lost my front brake once (from the reservoir screw having a crack) and back
brake (from my hose getting ripped out during a crash), also I did the the
adventure race in Hidalgo awhile back and something happened in transit and
I had to bike with rubbing brakes (fixed when I got home and bleed the
lines). So, for racing I would def be more comfortable with mechanical.
But hey my new bike has hydraulics and I am okay with it, as I am not really
racing much anymore, but if I started back I would change them for sure.
Just my two 1/2 cents
Cheers

I am buying brakes for my new AR bike, looking for a little advice from some AR
racers.
It seems like most of the disc brakes on the market are hydraulic, is what came
on my last bike, but I'm still a little uncomfortable with the fact that minor
damage to a brake line could cause brake failure - espcially in AR, when you
could be miles from nowhere.
I looked into having at least the rear disc be mechanical, but after a little
more research I am thinking of going mechanical altogether. I was comparing the
Avid Elixir hydraulic and the Avid BB7 mechanical brakes, and reading in several
forums, mtbr.com, cyclingforum.com etc.
Seems that everyone agrees that the modulation ("feel") of hydraulic is better,
and that the stopping power is better. But most of the users of the BB7 said
they like the "feel" just fine, and they can lock up their wheels in just about
any riding conditions, so the extra power of hydraulics is overkill. Both types
of brakes "fade" when heated on extended downhills, but the hydraulics take
longer to cool down and more than one rider reported fluid leakage when their
hydraulics overheated and subsequent brake problems.
Plus the hydraulics require a special brake lever, are harder to maintain, AND
are more expensive.
So why on earth would I choose hydraulic over mechanical unless I am 250lbs
doing bomber downhill stuff? What am I missing here?
Thanks Glenn,
My apologies to all
It seems with all the work we have into our site over the last few months we
forgot perhaps one of the most important items..race date.
The dates are July 09-19 with registration taking place on the 08 of July.
We have added it several places on our site, thanks for noticing and pointing it
out. We had it all posted on our J2 Site but somehow it got overlooked on the

Hi everyone,
Our good friend Antonio Rosquillas, Baja Travesia’s Adventure Race creator
and director, along with Alex Reyes from Team Baja and Luis Reyes are trying to
summit Picacho Del Diablo (Devil’s Peak), Baja’s highest peak (10’157
feet), through the treacherous East face cliff of the mountain. Usually the
peak is approached via the West approach and less often following the Eastern
approach, but always getting to the summit via the peak’s West face. No one
has ever tried to summit through the East face because of extreme technical
difficulties. Despite the rough terrain, they are making a quick ascent.

adventure racers,
It was an interesting race. It was fun!
It started off on Thursday November 5 with the first maybe 60 or 70
miles as a pretty standard race course. Each team just trying to do
their best; some paddling, some portaging, some mtbiking (with some
fairly big hills). Then throughout Thursday night, all day Friday, all
day Saturday, all the way until 5 AM on Sunday - there were so many
options presented that each team basically designed their own race
course.
It was a big area, with lots of options, and with lots of adventure. For
about 50 to 60 hours each team was just doing their own thing in the
mountains of the Sierra Nevada with no idea how well they were doing and
no idea how well other teams were doing. This required of a team
forbearance, determination, and resolve to stay the course and yet adapt
as need be.
Finally on Sunday morning at 5 AM, the teams were allowed to start the
last leg, a 25 mile paddle that included at about its halfway point a
small overland O-course. This format for the final day put "the race"
back into the race and made it a lot of fun. The teams were shoulder to
shoulder again for the final adrenaline packed 10 or so hours of racing.
My compliments to the Gold Rush Team for such a fine race course, see
www.goldrushar.com <http://www.goldrushar.com> .
and we'll see ya racing,

*I know this is off topic, but I just had to post it. As a former Marine

*I owe it to myself, Country and Corps to pass it forward. *
**
*Please forgive me for posting it. ~Pete*
*Happy Marine Corps Birthday (Yesterday) and Veteran's Day to all of you! *
**
*Please Remember Darrell "Shifty" Powers
*
*Thank you Shifty! ~Pete*
*We're hearing a lot today about big splashy memorial services.*
*I want a nationwide memorial service for Darrell "Shifty" Powers.*
*Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy *
*Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st *
*Airborne Infantry. If you've seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the *
*History Channel , you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10 *
*Episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them.*
*I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn't *
*Know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having trouble
reading his ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was at the right
gate, and noticed the "Screaming Eagle," the symbol of the 101st Airborne,
on his hat.*
*Making conversation, I asked him if he'd been in the 101st Airborne or if
his son was serving. He said quietly that he had been in the 101st. I
thanked him for his service, then asked him when he served, and how many
jumps he made.*
*Quietly and humbly, he said "Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so, and
was in until sometime in 1945 .. . . " at which point my heart skipped.*
*At that point, again, very humbly, he said "I made the 5 training *
*Jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . . Do you know
where Normandy is?"
At this point my heart stopped.*
*I told him "yes, I know exactly where Normandy is, and I know what D-Day
was." At that point he said "I also made a second jump into Holland , into
Arnhem ." I was standing with a genuine war hero . . . . *
*And then I realized that it was June, just after the anniversary of *
*D-Day..*
* *
*I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France , and he said "Yes.
And it's real sad because, these days, so few of the guys are left, and
those that are, lots of them can't make the trip." My heart was in my throat
and I didn't know what to say.*
* *
*I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in Coach
while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to get him and
said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came forward, I got up out
of the seat and told him I wanted him to have it, that I'd take his in
coach.*
* *
*He said "No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there are *
*Still some who remember what we did and who still care is enough to make an
old man very happy." His eyes were filling up as he said it. And mine are
brimming up now as I write this.*
* *
*Shifty died on June 17, 2009 after fighting cancer.*
**
*
*
*There was no parade.*
*No big event in Staples Center .*
*No wall to wall back to back 24x7 news coverage.*
*No weeping fans on television.*
*And that's not right.*
* *
*Let's give Shifty his own Memorial Service, online, in our own quiet way.
Please forward this email to everyone you know. Especially to the veterans.*
*Rest in peace, Shifty.*
