Hi ALL,

I do NOT have (619) 726-5980 anymore. It was my Govt cell number and I had
to turn it back in. I will be issued a new phone and number in a few days.
*PLEASE DO NOT CALL (619) 726-5980 ANYMORE, as that number will be issued to
another person.*

I have a temp verizon phone of (404) 694-3445; it has very limited number

I am still in Atlanta, GA and will be back late Saturday or midday Sunday.

Below is the last update to the Registered Teams. There are 60
adventure athletes among 23 teams. There is room (maps, swag, etc) for
three more teams to register and join in. Here is the Desert Winds
<http://adventure-racing.kayak-lake-mead.com/desert-winds.html> link.

Hello Desert Winds Athletes,

Welcome to the Desert Winds. In 12 days I will be meeting you, briefing
you, and sending you off to the Desert Winds. I want to thank you for
entering and I want to congratulate you for entering one of the toughest
24 Hour (plus) Adventure Race courses that you can imagine.

There are 60 of you. There are among you; fourteen 3-4 person coed
teams, two 2-person male teams, and seven solo male entry's. Attached is
the final team roster.

This briefing is to update you with the "where and what of it" (for
which I am including a Google Map) and to convey to you information so
you may be prepared for this adventure race course.

Where:
A picture is a thousand words, so here is a map;
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=1139717971029958\
18770.00044bf39e442c40f09bb&ll=36.033774,-114.321918&spn=0.124658,0.2320\
86&z=12
<http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=113971797102995\
818770.00044bf39e442c40f09bb&ll=36.033774,-114.321918&spn=0.124658,0.232\
086&z=12> .

Use the map, click on the icons for information, zoom in and out, pan
around, and even change views form map to satellite to terrain. If you
have Google Earth on your computer, you can even transfer the info over
to Google Earth.

What:
1. We have a campground from Friday to Sunday, see the Google Map.

2. Check-In, Boat Drop, and your TA set up is from 0600 hrs to 0915 hrs
on Saturday morning, see the Google Map.

3. The pre-race meeting is promptly at 0930 hrs, see the map. The race
starts shortly thereafter...and stand-by! Show up to the pre-race
completely ready to GO. My pre-race briefing will be short and to the
point, I want you on this course as soon as possible.

The Pre-Race Location:
1. There is a restaurant (for a greasy breakfast) and small store
(water, beer, and potato chips mostly) that are walking distance from
the Check-In.

2. Bring the food, drink, and water that you would prefer.

Check-In:
Get there early and get ready to do this thing!!!

USARA:
This is a United States Adventure Racing Association race. It is, in
fact, a USARA National Championship Qualifier. I need to ask you to
bring $8 for a single event USARA membership, $35 for a one year
membership, or proof of your USARA license.

The Pre-Race Meeting and The First Leg:
Show up at the pre-race prepared to take some quick notes and
immediately run, trek, and swim.

The Course:
Expect to be on this course 24 or so hours.

The After Race:
The ceremonies and party start at noon on Sunday.

Mandatory Gear:
I've made two changes to the gear list. I put "Sharpie Permanent Marker"
(strongly suggested for marking your maps) and back up writing utensils
(pens and pencils) on the Full Time Team Gear list and under Kayak Leg
list I put ANCHOR system.

Navigation:
1. Do some thinking now on what you need to do to accurately navigate up
canyons, because you will be navigating up lots of canyons.

2. Think about navigating along complicated shorelines, because you will
be swimming and paddling along some complicated shorelines.

3. As you progress on the first stages of the course, think about how
long swim, trek, or paddle passages take your team. This knowledge will
help you make the right decisions in later parts of the race course.

4. Know how to plot CP's with UTM coordinates and with a given bearing
and distance.

5. The declination for the area is 10 degrees East, i.e. magnetic north
is 10 deg east of grid north.

Swimming:
1. Some sort of inflatable raft or boogie board is what you need. But,
this is your decision. Swim it anyway you want. Just be prepared. The
water may not be more than 60 deg F or so. The wind has not stopped
blowing and the convection effect of wind over the water is keeping the
water temp low.

2. There will be times when you will need to trek with your swim gear.

3. Expect situations whereas changing into and out of your swim kit
multiple times is called for.

Paddling:
1. Expect high winds out there on the water on this race course. You may
not experience high winds, but so far this Spring, the wind had not
stopped blowing!

2. IMPORTANT: The places that you will be "beaching up" your boats are
not nice beaches. The shoreline is rocky, cliff-like, and overgrown with
vegetation and the bottom is likely to be very deep mud. In other words,
there is no place to beach your boat(s). Be prepared for this with an
anchor system. Be prepared to anchor your boat(s) off shore, exit your
craft, swim to shore, and to reverse the process when you return to your
boats....basically you need good wet exit/entry techniques.

3. Here are two anchor system examples, (1) nylon mesh bag(s) that can
be filled with rocks or (2) rubber coated dumbbell(s).

Questions:
Just email me with your questions...

see you there,
Robert Finlay

What to Expect in Big Sky Country by Corey Rosen

In April of 1803, the United States acquired 828,000 square miles of French
territory west of the Mississippi River for eleven million dollars called the
Louisiana Purchase. In 1804, President Thomas Jefferson put together the Corps
of Discovery to explore the Missouri River and to find the Northwest Passage, a
non-existent all water route through the United States from the Atlantic to the
Pacific Ocean. The Corps of Discovery, led by Captains Mertiwether Lewis and
William Clark, discovered what is now Montana in 1805.

Even with Lewis and Clark discovering for the United States what is now
Montana, this beautiful area has been inhabited by many Indian Nations for
hundreds of years. With over 70,000 Native Americans living in Montana, they
make up close to 10% of the states population. Because the Indian Nations treat
the land of Montana as sacred, they expect the Primal Quest as visitors to due
the same. In past PQ events, non-profit outdoor education organizations such as
the National Outdoor Leadership School and Leave No Trace, helped make sure the
environmental impact of the race was minimal or positive in nature. This year,
the Primal Quest athletes, coordinators, and volunteers will work even more
diligently to keep this natural oasis untouched and undamaged for the residents
and future visitors to Montana.

Located between Bozeman, Montana and Yellowstone National Park, Big Sky has
everything an adventure racer could want when it comes to terrain, climate, and
atmosphere. Starting at about 7,500 ft. at Big Sky Mountain Village, the Primal
Quest will range in altitude from approximately 4,000 ft. to 11,000 ft. with
multiple ascents and descents totaling over 100,000 feet of elevation gain
throughout the race.

Unlike the infamous Primal Quest 2006 race from Moab, Utah where the average
temperature was over 100 degrees, Big Sky will have an estimated average
temperature of 75 degrees or more. Because this race takes place in the middle
of summer, some areas of the course could reach temperatures up to 90 degrees.
Because of the altitude, some temperatures could reach below freezing in the
high country and late at night. Even though the race will take place at the
height of summer, it is inevitable that teams will come across areas of the race
course that will be covered in snow.

With only a few states that have natural hot springs, Montana has over 30 with
another 25 man-made pools fed by the natural hot springs. It is likely the
athletes will come across a natural hot springs pool during the race. This
could be an opportunity for competitors to relax and refresh before continuing
on, or it could present a distraction to those teams wanting more rest than they
need. Each team will probably treat this prospect differently.

As far as poisonous snakes and critters, there are not many of these animals
in the Montana mountains. Of the ten species of snakes in Montana, the
rattlesnake is the only one that is poisonous. As for spiders and other
insects, the Black Widow is the only poisonous spider in the state of Montana.
There have been cases of Brown Recluse bites, but no spiders of that type have
ever been found in Montana.
With the exotic location of Big Sky, Montana, the competitors taking place in
the Primal Quest will see a course filled with beauty and unending scenery. But
don’t be fooled. Just because the area is incredible to look at, the race will
be sure to challenge and amaze even the most veteran adventure racer. For more
information visit www.ecoprimalquest.com.

Team Scrat has room for a racer or two, for Rick's OC Adventure Race.
It's a great chance to try the sport in a more "casual" setting. Call

In all the aftermath of our gear boxes breaking off our crew car and
people being so nice as to offer space for all our stuff in their crew
cars, my Marmot Helium (Blue) sleeping bag in a black GoLite sack has
accidentally found a new home.

Does anyone that did the Baja Travesia have an unexplained sleeping bag
in their inventory now? If so, I am very attached to it as it has
saved my life more than once. If you have it, I would appreciate
reuniting with this 1 pound 8 oz wonder of science. I can identify it
if you need as it has a marking on it to identify me.

Please contact me at 310-918-1100 or via email at x@...

Hello adventure racers!

On May 3rd and 4th, MerGeo will take over Washington's Whidbey Island to
bring you the BEAST 15 Hour Adventure Race.

As the largest island in Washington and home of the first National Historic
Land Reserve in the National Park system, we thought Whidbey seemed an
appropriate place to host the ultimate weekend island adventure.

Racers will have the chance to explore the beautiful waters of the Puget
Sound by kayak, fly up and down the island's rolling hills and unique
terrain on bike and trek through some of the country's oldest nationally
reserved forests.

Gather your team and sign up today!

15 hour and 7 hour course options are available.
Start times are 12 midnight for the 15 hour race and 9:30 a.m. (Sunday, May
4) for the 7 hour. Course details include 40-60 miles biking on roads and
trails, 10-20 miles salt water paddling, 20-30 miles trekking, navigation
throughout, along with a surprise challenge or two. The 7 Hour will have a
saner 20-30 miles on the bike, 5-10 paddling, and 5-10 trekking.
Visit http://www.beastrace.com for complete details including registration,
schedule, gear, and directions.
Register by May 1 to avoid paying the late entry fee or by April 22 for the
early price.

Just in from Katie, <<...>> <<...>>
2 1/2 weeks! I still need some volunteer positions to be secured out on the
course. If you were considering volunteering I need to hear from you now! I need
all T-shirt sizes from all volunteers by Friday. Please download the attachment
to see if your information is complete or to see what is available. Red means
the position is available and blue means I haven't gotten a confirmation.

If you are positioned in the expo area you have a choice of bringing your own
lunch or eating at the food booth. Course volunteers have a choice of Ham,
Turkey, Veggie or bringing your own. If you haven't signed a volunteer release
form yet you can sign it Friday evening, 5/2, before the race at the Pizza Co.

Also, I need at least 6 people to help for a few hours Sunday morning between

Hey Adventure Racers. Some of you are heading up to the Central Coast, others
to the Desert Winds, some we'll see next week in OC, Some are headed to Vegas
for the Desert Dash. That's a lot of AR without even mentioning the recent Baja
Traverse that many of you just tackled.

But if you're looking for a great adventure race, not too far from home, that
will deliver 8-11 hours of pure fun, adrenaline, challenge, and
camaraderie....look no further than Desert Rage Laguna Mountain on May 17th.
The early registration pricing ends next week, and you don't often find an
adventure race these days for under a hundred bucks. Come out and join us!!!
GREAT singletrack, a trek you won't forget, orienteering, and we'll be serving
up meatball sandwiches for dinner.

Oh, and you also earn points toward the Desert Rage championship.

News Release

Endorphin FIX “Toughest 3 Day Adventure Race in the U.S.” to showcase the BEST
of WEST VIRGINIA in run for $30,000 prize purse

Racers to visit multiple WV parks, rivers, and trails while trekking, paddling
and biking southern West Virginia

Lookout, WV – On April 24, 2008, Elite adventure athletes from across the U.S. &
Canada, will take to the mountains of southern WV for the 17th Edition of the
Endorphin FIX Adventure Race. Widely touted as the “Toughest 2–day race in the
US,” this edition the EFIX will expand to a three-day expedition style format in
answer to racers wanting a race that is a true adventure, challenging,
affordable and still allows them to get home by the end of the weekend. Pipestem
Resort State Park will host the race activities including Event Headquarters
with registration, the ropes/climbing testing area and 72 non-stop hours later,
the finish line.

The race is routed through several WV counties and will include epic mountain
biking, with teams battling up the long WV mountains; trekking through WV’s
rugged hills, hollers and valleys; whitewater rafting; whitewater swimming;
canoeing and portaging in the chilling waters of the New River. Racers will stop
to soak up the view on the rim of the New River Gorge before they rappel over
180’ to the trail below. Live coverage will be available via
www.CheckpointTracker.com.

Event designers have spent months pouring over maps and defining routes that
will offer a real showcase of the area and give racers a honest action packed
adventure, “albeit closer to home,” says Course Designer and Fayette County
resident, Joy Marr. “This FIX will be a taste of a real expedition since racers
will be out for 3 nights.”

Owner and President of Odyssey Adventure Racing, Ronny Angell, adds, “The EFIX
has a rich history of high adventure and unrelenting physical, emotional and
mental challenges, with many teams aspiring to return year after year. Racers
have come to LOVE the pain and beauty of the WV Mountains.” Angell adds of this
Odyssey classic, “Racers get a true test of themselves in the EFIX. Many will
push further than they thought possible and will come out of this race with a
newfound confidence and inner strength that will serve them well in their
everyday lives”.

Angell notes, “ though the actual race route is held secret until race start,
this course will take teams through Bluestone State Park and WMA, Mill Creek
Trail in Ansted, Gauley River NRA, New River Gorge NR and Pipestem State Park,
giving teams a close up of the best and varied terrain of southern West
Virginia.” Teams will be able to have their friends and families follow their
progress and send encouragement live throughout the event via
Checkpointtracker.com.

Odyssey is excited to include the Endorphin Fix in two great events this year.
The first is the Checkpoint Tracker Adventure Racing Points Series, where
participating teams will be able to earn double points towards a $30,000 prize
purse.

The second is the winning premier team of the “Toughest 3 Day Race in the US”
will earn a slot in the “The World’s Most Challenging Human Endurance
Competition,” Primal Quest. In the event the winning team does not claim its
slot, the second team will gain the opportunity to race in Montana this summer.

Interested non racers with a passion for adventure can be a part of the EFIX by
registering to volunteer online via www.oarevents.com/volunteer.asp

Hi Everyone, follow along as Kevin Cadieux and I attempt what we think is
the first nonstop trans-county traverse (www.seatoseatrail.org
<http://www.seatoseatrail.org/> ) via mountain bike. We have mapped out the
route and believe it to be 145 miles with approximately 21,000 feet of
elevation gain (OUCH!) Kevin promised to attach his tow rope to his bike.

We head to the Salton Sea tomorrow (Thursday) night thanks to our friends
Mash and Rob who are kind enough to give us a ride out there. We expect to
start biking at around 8 or 9pm Thursday night. If all goes well, we plan
to post updates to Kevin's blog www.ibclimbn.blogspot.com
<http://www.ibclimbn.blogspot.com/> throughout Friday so you can review our
progress. Check-in often to see if we are still making progress. Be sure
to leave us some comments on the site.
