Can anyone recommend a good pair of trail running
shoes to use in races? Hi-Tec, Salomon, Montrail,
North Face? I've heard that a shoe's ability to drain
water easily is a good feature. Any others?

Thanks!

Hi everyone

We had a great turnout today for the Lake Castaic Trial Run and got to
meet some new members. It was a perfect day to hit the trail and get
out on the lake for some kayaking. Thanks everyone for coming out and
joining the group for the day. Hope to see more of you soon.

Make sure and check the events calendar for upcoming events. We will
be trying to organize another outing soon so keep your eyes open. If
you are wanting to do the Bud Light Cross Country MTB Race at Lake
Castaic on Sunday, April 16, post a message to the group and we can let
you know who is participating.

I will be in need of a third teammate for the Hi-Tec Adventure Race on
May 21.
I need a female racer to race with us so if you are interested send me
an email and we can talk. I have my team already registered as a coed
team but if I don't find an interested female racer by then I will fill
the last spot with a male racer in the all male division.

If anyone has any ideas on future outings or skills clinics please let
us know.

Hi everyone,

This is to confirm our Lake Castaic event on Sunday March 26th at 9am.
Please email me back at brice.benefiel@... to confirm that
you are coming and if you are bringing or renting a kayak, we will
probably coordinate it to where we can switch off turns with the kayaks
to give everyone a chance to kayak if they are wanting to. I have a
few people that want to kayak but aren't able to bring one so if you
can share a 2 seater let me know. Thanks

Remember, you can do any of the events you want, it is up to each
individual. Some people have to leave early and won't be doing
everything so anything goes.

Here is what we plan to do:

We will start off with a 10-12 mile bike ride followed by a 3-4 mile
trail run followed by a 1-2 mile kayak on the lake. Some of you guys
have done this course before so you will be our leaders.

I have about 15 people confirmed to be there at 9am, probably more
soon. I look forward to seeing everyone there and meeting some of the
new members of the group.

Directions are below and the link to the map is http://www.mesp.com/ars
ev01.htm

Castaic Lake is about 38 miles north of Los Angeles, a few minutes off
of I-5 near Valencia.

Turn Left and drive 1/2 mile to park entrance.

The SCARAB flyer is now online for you to download, print out, and, if
you'd like, put up on bulletin boards to spread the word about the
club. You can find it in our eGroups page at http://www.egroups.com/doc
vault/scarabs/, or on the SCARAB Web site at http://www.scarabs.homeste
ad.com. It's an Adobe Acrobat PDF file, so you'll need the Adobe
Acrobat Reader to open the file (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/

We really appreciate your help in spreading the word about the club.
The more members we have, the better we can make the club…more
activities, better discounts, more training partners and teammates.
Post it at gyms; schools; stores that sell sporting goods, outdoor
equipment, bikes, nutrition supplements or shoes; or anywhere you think
interested people will see it. And if you or someone you know is a
designer and would like to redesign the flyer, just let me know.

Thanks!

Some SCARAB news:

1. First, thanks to everyone for their support of the club. We now have
31 members, and the Web site is getting a lot more hits. We had a great
turnout for our first mountain bike ride a few weeks ago, and we expect
a big turnout for the Castaic mountain bike ride/trail run/kayak this
Sunday, March 26. Details on that event will be coming from Brice in
the next day or so. We'll be organizing carpools; it's about a
45-minute drive from West L.A. You don't have to do all 3 events, just
the ones you want. We'll be doing the mountain bike and trail run
first, and we might try to make up our own "special tests" depending on
what we can think up. Invite your friends.

2. I designed a flier for the club and have begun posting it around
town. Public relations is key at this point so that we can grow the
club's membership base. We need your help to spread the word! We're
working on making the flier available as a PDF file on the Web for
people to download. But I had to cut and paste it together with
scissors, so for now, I can mail it to anyone who wants to make copies
of it and post it around town. At gyms, athletic stores, schools, or
anywhere you think interested people would see it. The more members we
have, the better, so any help you can provide is much appreciated.
Email me with your mailing address if you want a copy. The flier is
only an interim step; we still need a professional designer to
volunteer their services. If you know anyone, let me know.

3. I changed everyone's egroups setting so that you won't receive a
separate email every time someone sends an email to the group. This
could result in getting a ton of emails a day from SCARAB. I set it so
that you'll get a single email which compiles all the group emails sent
that day. If no one sent an email to the group that day, you won't get
anything. If 10 people sent emails, you'll get 1 email that compiles
all 10 messages. If you want to change this setting so that you receive
every email individually, or, if you never want to get a SCARAB email
(you can still read them any time on the Web), just go to
www.egroups.com/group/scarabs/info.html.

4. I also changed it so that when you reply to a message, the "reply"
box in your email message is set to the person who wrote the message
you're replying to, not the whole group. If you want to reply to the
entire group, just change the "reply" box to "scarabs@egroups.com." If
you get the single compilation email, then replying to that will reply
to the group.

5. Upcoming events that the club will be targeting as a group: 5K/10K
run at Loyola Marymount University in Playa del Rey on 4/15
(http://www.runforthebay.org/) and the California Fitness Challenge at
Huntington Beach Pier on May 7 (http://www.ocnow.com/recreation/fitness
challenge/). Email the club if you are interested/want to carpool/want
to form a team for the Fitness Challenge. Here's a bit about the
Fitness Challenge: "With divisions for both individuals and teams, the
California Fitness Challenge 2000 will test your speed, strength,
stamina with a three-mile beach run, timed pull-up and push-up
contests, and an obstacle course. The beach portion will consist of a
balance beam, sprinting, a tire roll, crawling under a cargo net,
hurdles, zig-zag run, tire straddles, long jump, and more." If you want
to propose other races, just email the group. Does anyone want to
compile a calendar of California adventure races that we can put on the
Web?

6. Does anyone want to be in charge of getting discounts from adventure
racing schools, stores, gyms, etc.? We've started to get discounts, and
it would be nice if someone could coordinate everything and let
everyone know the results.

See you on Sunday!

David

ride in before April 16, which is the date for the Bud Light Cross
Country Mtb Race ($34 to enter, go to www.mesp.com for registration) at
Lake Castaic. If anyone is interested in doing the race let David or
I know so we can meet up and go as a group.

I guess I will leave it up to everyone to get a kayak or hook up with
someone who has one. I will probably rent one myself from Sport Chalet
($35/weekend)so anyone that wants can split it with me.

Look forward to seeing everyone.

We've created a teammate finder to make it easy for
SCARAB members to find a team to join or a teammate to
complete their existing team. It's located at our
egroups site (www.egroups.com/list/scarabs) under the
tab labeled "database." You can sort the data by
clicking on any column. Once your data is entered, you
cannot edit it yourself (this is an egroups quirk--if
we didn't do this, anyone could modify everyone else's
data). Please email arbuddies@... if you need to
change your data.

Here's a link directly to the teammate finder:

Good luck with your search!

Hello everyone

I want to see if we can get some people together for a kayak and bike
session up at Lake Castaic on a Sunday sometime soon.  I know a few people
that have some kayaks and I also know that you can rent a kayak at Sports
Chalet for $35 for the entire weekend.

Dear SCARAB member:

1. As you can see, we started an email mailing list
with egroups.com. This will allow us all to keep in
touch and send messages to all club members. Since
we're all learning how to use the system, please be
patient until we can iron out all the kinks. Remember
that you can change the settings at egroups to
regulate how you receive messages: every time a
message is sent, at the end of the day as one message
compiling all the messages from that day, or never,
just archived on the egroups site. We don't want you
to feel bombarded with emails. Since every SCARAB
member gets every email you send to the group, please
keep your messages brief and relevant to the entire
club. When replying to a message, please email the
person directly unless you think the entire club will
benefit by your email. Keep in mind that some people
don't want to get a ton of SCARAB messages. If you
have any suggestions about egroups, let me know.

2. There is now a link to the SCARAB website on the
Hi-Tec website. Check it out at
http://www.mesp.com/arslinks.htm. This should increase
club membership very quickly. Thank you, MESP!

3. Sign up for the Hi-Tec as soon as possible. They
sold out last year, and lots of teams had to post
desperate messages on the web trying to buy other
people's entries. Don't be left out!

4. Lots of club members will be racing in the Bud
Light California State Cross Country mountain bike
race on April 16. The race is run by MESP, the
organizer of the Hi-Tec, and it's held at Castaic
Lake, where the Hi-Tec will be. This will be excellent
practice for the Hi-Tec. You don't have to have any
mountain bike racing experience to participate. There
are different categories, from beginner to expert.
Check out http://www.mesp.com/cmbc.htm for more info.
Club members can carpool together and join up at the
race for pre- and post-race festivities. If you plan
to go, send an email to the group mentioning where you
live so that anyone else who is going can get in touch
with you if they want to carpool.

5. Our next club workout will be a moderate mountain
bike ride followed by a trail run. If you have any
ideas where we should do this, send a group email. Or
if you have other workout ideas, let us know. Since
club members are spread out throughout Southern
California, don't hesitate to initiate your own group
workout by emailing the group with info on what you
plan to do, where and when, and anyone who wants to
join you can get in touch with you.

6. If you took a class at one of the adventure racing
schools in the area, like AFT, Conquer or Trident, it
would be a great benefit to the club if you could
contact the school and see if they can link to our
site and work with the club by organizing classes for
club members and telling their students about the
club. If you have any contacts at rock climbing
schools (Rockutopia), A-16, orienteering clubs, or any
school that teaches skills related to AR, it would be
great if you could see if they would be willing to
teach a special class for club members or offer us
discounts. Interested club members could pay a fee,
and we'd get a class in an AR skill. The school would
make money and also get leads for future classes. We
will put a link to the school or club on our site, as
well.

7. Here is the club update that was sent last week, so
that new members can see it and it will be archived on
egroups:

Here is an update on the latest developments with
SCARAB: Southern California Adventure Racing Buddies.
The club is growing quickly, and we'd like everyone to
know what's up. We also need your help in getting the
club to the next level.

We have around 25 members so far, from San Diego to
Santa Barbara. So far, lots of web sites have links to
the club, and starting in April, Competitor magazine
will be printing a listing for the club in their club
directory for 6 months. MESP, the sponsor of the
Hi-Tec race, has offered to put a link to our web site
on their site. So we expect to get a lot more members
in the coming months.

We've been talking with adventure racing schools in
Southern California about offering special discounts
or classes for SCARAB members. We'll keep you updated.
Quest Adventure Training, an "indoor training center
for outdoor sports" (in Santa Monica, where Voight
Fitness used to be) has graciously offered to let us
use their facilities for club meetings and to provide
discounts for SCARAB members on classes and membership
fees. You can visit them at www.quest-at.com and
www.adventuretrain.com.

So, the club is growing quickly, but we need your
help. Our goal is to expand the membership base as
fast as possible so that we can organize more club
activities and get better discounts and special
offers. To do this, we need your help. If you'd like
to help with any of the following, please email me.
(All of this would be on a volunteer basis; we don't
have a budget, since membership is free!)

1. Get the word out about the club. We need publicity!
Links on web sites, notifying search engines about the
club, posting to newsgroups, emailing friends, putting
up fliers in gyms and stores or anywhere else
adventure racers would see it, getting the club
mentioned in magazine or newspaper articles. Anything
helps. Having lots of members and public exposure
means we can plan more and better activities, get more
discounts and receive more special offers throughout
Southern California. Anything that you can do to help
is appreciated. Once we have a club flier, we can post
it as a PDF file on the web site, and anyone can
download it and print out copies to distribute.
Meanwhile, spread the word about the club's web site
and email address.

2. Design a permanent web site, with pictures,
schedules, message boards, a teammate finder,
automated membership form, etc. If you have web skills
or know anyone who wants to volunteer, let me know.
The current site is pretty bare-my web skills are
extremely limited! The designer would get their own
link on the site, so they can get publicity for their
own business. It would also be nice to get a standard
URL, rather than the "Homestead" address. Anyone know
the best way to enter membership data into a database
to facilitate email mailings and teammate finding?

3. Establish an email mailing list so that everyone
can keep in touch, find teammates, organize workouts,
exchange tips, etc. I was thinking of using a free
email mailing list site like www.onelist.com. If
anyone has ideas on the best way to start a group
email list, let me know.

4. Design a flier to advertise the club. This could be
an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet that is eye-catching, has a cool
logo and design, describes the club a bit and gives
the contact info. We would post this flier in stores
and gyms, as well as bring copies to local races. MESP
has offered to let us put fliers on car windshields at
the upcoming Hi-Tec race. If you're a designer or know
anyone who wants to volunteer, let me know. The
designer could get an acknowledgment on the flier, so
they can get publicity for their own business.

5. Ideas for running the club. How should things work?
How can we coordinate activities throughout Southern
California? What's the best way to facilitate people
finding teammates? What sort of activities should we
plan? We need people to actively participate in
running and organizing the club. If anyone wants to
nominate themselves as a club officer/director and get
in on the ground floor to shape the club as they'd
like to see it, let me know.

That sums it up. Thanks to everyone for their interest
in the club and for being a founding member. Feel free
to email me if you'd like to help out in any way or if
you have any ideas.

Happy training,
David
