Hello Adventurers!

Registration is now open for the 2012 Untamed New England Adventure
Race. Along with details about the race on the website, we've also
posted all the details on how to register for the race, and there are
over 10 teams already signed-up (refer to the roster of teams for
details).

http://www.untamedne.com/ <http://www.untamedne.com/>

A Peak Into Untamed New England 2012

2012 Untamed New England will take place in a brand new area and we're
working with Northern Outdoors in The Forks of Maine as the host venue.
This is deep Maine wilderness, and was the setting for the 1995
Eco-Challenge race; the leadership at Northern Outdoors worked along
side Mark Burnett to produce that Eco-Challenge event . . . they are
ecstatic to re-connect with the adventure racing community 16 years
later.

Our race will again be distinguished as a Qualifier for the Adventure
Racing World Championships; in 2012, the World Championships will be in
the French Alps in September. Our race winners earn a free ticket to the
Championship race along with $5000 cash, and our 2nd place team also
wins a paid entry to the World Championships.

We've spent a lot of time on the race course these last few months, and
I'm confident in declaring it our finest race course yet. The course has
a great balance of the AR classics such as paddling, biking, trekking,
and ropes -- with the addition of some newer activities like whitewater
rafting and packrafting. By adding a 4th day of racing to the event, we
can be more relaxed with our time cut-offs and can assure teams that the
biggest ropes and whitewater rafting sections will be completed before
any time cut-offs.

We finished permitting conversations on our most intense sections of the
race, and the land managers were unanimous in sharing that "nobody has
done a traverse like that in recorded history, maybe not even the Native
Americans going all the way back." There are great things in store for
teams racing the Untamed New England 2012 next June! You may not be
ready for us, but we're ready for you!

See you in June!

I have a few domains that are currently parked at GoDaddy and about to expire.
They cost about $10 a year to maintain.  If I let them expire, there are
companies that will snatch them up immediately assuming I have forgotten to
renew them and try and try to sell them back to me, so I thought I would see if
any of my adventure racing friends would like them first.

You can have them free if you want them, but you gotta take em' in the next
week.  If you do want them, you HAVE to email me at

Free Adventure Race - San Diego area, February 11

Team Equinox will be putting on a race consisting of run, bike and
orienteering. We have discovered a couple of new trails in the Black
Mountain area (at least they are new to us) and we feel we must share them.
There will be a long and short course.

Run - long course about 8.4 miles (2100 ft elevation), short course 6.0
miles.
Bike - long course about 16.6 miles (1900 ft elevation), short course 7.8
miles.
Orienteering - (optional) about 3.5 miles, get markers in any sequence.

Map will contain checkpoint markers for the short course, but competitors
will need to plot UTM coordinates for long course checkpoints and O course
locations. Maps will be 1:24K and are not waterproof, so be prepared to
protect them if it rains. The course will be very challenging if it does
rain and we may change some of the options if there is bad weather.

Instruction handout at 9 AM, race start at 10 AM and you must be finished by
4 PM.

To enter, please go to our web page www.baAdventures.com/events.html and
register. The registration page gives more details about the start/finish
location, or email us: Equinox.Adventure@...

The Gold Rush Mother Lode Expedition is back in 2012, on the west slope
of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains. Come out and take the challenge
August 8-12, 2012. We are once again part of the Adventure Racing World
Series and a qualifier for the AR World Series Championship event, the
Raid in France September 15 - 22, 2012. We are also part of both the Cal
ARA and Checkpoint Tracker season long points series competitions.
Big news for 2012, no support crews! Gold Rush will shuttle your gear to
where it's needed. All the people who usually work on support crews are
now free to be race volunteers.
Visit the Gold Rush Adventure Racing <http://www.goldrushar.com/>
website to register and to keep up with the latest developments.

Thanks Equinox for putting on another race. If you aren't showing up to these
events you're missing out on free races that are always lots of fun. Whether you
are a novice or advanced racer these races will challenge you. Black mountain
offered treking on some rarely traveled trails, fun singletrack biking, and some
navigation challenges for even those that knew the area. There are hardly any
races in Southern California, so I would encourage both previous racers and
newbies to get out to these events and keep the sport alive.

Hey SCARAB,

Looking for some trail running time in a beautiful setting? Then, come join us
at the Malibu Day & Moonlight Madness Trail Runs on March 10th.
http://desertdash.com/Malibu_Day___Night_2012.html

This is one of the most stunning and varied trail courses we've ever done (and
we've run many!). The course offers a surprising amount of variety, from a
shaded narrow canyon to broad ridge lines with incredible views of the ocean,
broad valleys, and red sandstone cliffs.

If you want to check out the course first, come out on Feb 26th for a preview by
Sport for Eve, the race director, and a trail running clinic with special guest
Jason Robillard, author of "The Barefoot Running Book".

You must RSVP for the course preview and clinic to be held at the race site in
Malibu on February 26th (two weeks before the race) at 9:30 a.m. Please email us
atevents@sportsforeve or call us at 310 838-6588 to reserve your space.

Last year, the first annual Malibu Daytime and Moonlight Madness Trail runs were
held at the top of Coral Canyon in Malibu. This year it will start at the
trailhead of the Sycamore Canyon Trail. Read what Cyril Jay-Rayon, one of the
sponsors of the event, posted on his blog about last years event.

Hey all,

Just coming back again to remind you that we have a deadline of March1st to
sell 200 entries to both events or we will not offer them!

Here is an image to print and post if you'd like to support us from putting
on ARs: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7198/6871593505_8c34bbcc31_b.jpg

And just what are we offering? Two great courses on the same day with a fun
event festival for all finishers. Beautiful kayaking, single track mountain
biking, epic trekking, a zipline and a water slide! What a deal!

Thanks for your attention and support! We'll let you know if we make our
numbers. It's not looking good. Right now we only have 10 people signed up.

Hi guys,

We've had a lot of disappointment about our decision to drop the sprints
and 6-hour races this year, so we decided on a compromise.

This year we will offer both a 6-hour intro adventure race (kayak, trek,
mountain bike, orienteering) and a 2-4 adventure race (all of the former
except the course will be marked) at our Lopez Lake location. Did we
mention there will be ziplines and water slides? Also, we will have it
timed so both groups come in around the same time for an awesome post-event
party!

All this and more BUT:

We must have 200 people signed up between both events by March 1st to put
it on. If we do not hit that number, our registration service will refund
your money and it will never touch our bank account. 200 is the number
required for us to break even on this event. Send a message to the race
directors in California and tell them there's still a market for a good
race by helping us meet this number!

Tell your friends! In the coming months we'll be posting tutorial videos on
our youtube channel so this is a great way to get new people into the sport.

Again, go to www.ccadventure.com to sign up for our Lopez Lake events by
MARCH 1st. We need 200 entries or this event will not go on!

Thanks!

Kristin

Subject: March 24: Discover the Bay: how to work the system
djrawman
Send Email Send Email

A new kind of event, so here's some strategy information, and I would
love your clarifying questions, so I can make sure good information is
put out well in advance. Also, signups are open at the bottom of the
event page. Thanks, Rex

6 hrs or 12 hrs, up and down the San Francisco Peninsula, the East
Bay, and the southern tip of Marin County. Dozens of named checkpoints
such as "The Fountain of Youth" and the "Train to Nowhere" - all the
names will be released in advance, and the exact locations will be
revealed at the event. The element of public transit makes this course
quite different than your standard foot or bicycle map adventure.
Personal motorized transport is not allowed - personal vehicles, cabs,
other vehicles for hire. These event details and tips should help you
plan for the event.

What you can bring: Anything - phones, tablets, laptops, any maps,
GPS, atlases, encyclopedias. Full Internet access allowed. Pinpoint
your location by GPS. Prepare maps ahead of time.

These maps will be provided with checkpoints labeled: You may preview
them by following the web links!

1. A Bay-area transit map (http://www.mtc.ca.gov/maps_and_data/MTS/index.htm
)
2. SF Muni system (http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mmaps/official.htm)
3. AC Transit system (http://www.actransit.org/maps/)
4. SamTrans system (http://www.samtrans.com/schedulesandmaps/maps.html)
5. Golden Gate transit (http://goldengatetransit.org/services/#maps)

Also, a Google map of all the locations will be published and made
available at the opening of registration for each course. You can even
use Google maps' transit planner while on your course with your
"smart" device. http://511.org also has a transit planner.

It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with these maps and figure
out which lines run on Saturdays and which lines have more frequent or
rapid service. Usually for buses, those lines will serve busier
streets such as El Camino Real and San Pablo Ave.

Crossing the Bay: BART trains run most frequently between San
Francisco and West Oakland - four different lines. Two different lines
each go to MacArthur BART and south on the Fremont line. Only line
from San Francisco goes to Ashby and the north and Rockridge and the
east (although, the course does not go east of the Oakland Hills.) AC
Transit runs bus lines over the Bay Bridge such as the O to/from
Alameda and the NL to/from Oakland. You can also use transbay buses as
local buses. There is no bus service across the San Mateo Bridge on
Saturdays. You may also use the ferry service between Pier 41 and
Alameda and Jack London Square in Oakland.

Transit agency links:
BART http://bart.gov
Caltrain http://www.caltrain.com/
Amtrak http://capitolcorridor.org/
AC Transit http://www.sfmta.com/cms/home/sfmta.php
SamTrans http://www.samtrans.com/
SF Muni http://www.sfmta.com/cms/home/sfmta.php
Golden Gate Transit http://goldengatetransit.org/
Alameda/Oakland Ferry http://www.eastbayferry.com/

Paying Fares: Not included in the event entry fee! A Clipper Card is
highly recommended if you plan to use buses - it works on all of them.
You can get one at Embarcadero BART or the bay crossings store in the
San Francisco Ferry Building or from the Clipper Website. If you're
just planning on 2 bay crossings with BART, then get a $20 BART ticket
and you'll be good. Of course, Clipper works on BART too... and
Caltrain... and the ferries... the only system Clipper doesn't work
on? Amtrak. Clipper Website: https://www.clippercard.com/ClipperWeb/index.do

Bicycles: Amtrak, CalTrain, and BART should all be easy to use with
bikes. With the buses, you are limited by the 2 or 3 slots on the rack
in the front of the bus. I've been turned away from buses before that
had full racks.

Not biking? There is a foot division for the results. I'm thinking
it's possible for the best foot team to outscore the best bike team. A
good strategy for the course is to look for clusters of checkpoints
you can get to on foot, and find the one that is closest to a
frequently running transit line.

How do I record each checkpoint?

1. Digital video clip with the feature (and your teammates - if you
are solo, just the feature will suffice.)
or 2. Digital photo with the feature (and your teammates - if you are
solo, just the feature will suffice.)
and 3. A multiple choice question and answer - required for all teams,
as a backup for technical issues. Sample question: what's the first
word of the last line of the plaque? "The" or "To" or "For."

When finishing, you will have some time to upload your photos and
videos to a website or transfer the files by card reader or USB cable
to my event laptop. You will also turn in your multiple choice
questions answers.

---

What other questions do you have? I want to make sure they get answered!
Thanks,
Rex

In two weeks we bring you this awesome adventure in Fort Ord, a former Army base
near Monterey. There are dozens of miles of sweet singletrack, and climb is not
much. It's a rogaine; about 30 checkpoints will be scattered all over the Public
Lands, and the distance to get them all is about 40 miles. You will have either
2 hours or 4 hours to pick your own adventure. Go on bike or on foot, as an
individual or a team!

We hope that the course is more than any team can handle... dare to prove us

We're getting excited about this years Gold Rush Mother Lode Expedition. We are
hosting the race at a well know California ski resort. This years race has a
traditional expedition feel, featuring long sections, a point to point route,
and nearly 50K feet of elevation gain. We are also working in a couple of fun
sections to keep it interesting.

Gold Rush Adventure Races is offering the following entry discounts for the Gold
Rush Mother Lode expedition race, August 8-12.

	 * Top 5 finishers at the 2011 AR World Series Championships in Tasmania get a
$1000- discount off the entry fee for their amazing accomplishment.
	 * International teams and teams east of Colorado get an $800- discount to help
off-set their travel expenses.
	 * Loyalty discount if you have ever done a Gold Rush Mother Lode (2009 or 2011)
of $500 off your entry fee.
	 * Teams that bring a volunteer will earn free lodging the night before the race
so ask the people you usually use as support crew to come out and volunteer at
the race.
Do you need to call some people? Do you need to figure out who's in? Well get on
it and get your team signed up. A $1000 deposit reserves your teams spot in the
race and secures the applicable discount. Discounts can not be combined, sorry.

From Robert Finlay of Kayak Lake Mead:

I'll be gone for about a year, walking and paddling across Ecuador,
the Andes, and the Amazon, living off the land as I go. This is the
Amazon 5000 – For the Cure <http://www.facebook.com/Amazon5000>
I'm leaving in a few weeks, before I go, I want to plug a few
events.

Expedition Racing: If you have not done the Gold Rush Mother Lode
<http://www.goldrushar.com/> , you need to. As far as I'm concerned
expedition racing is what AR is all about. I did the first Mother Lode
with CARA members Druce Finlay, Sylvie Maracci, and Mark Jackson. We
were challenged and we had a blast. These races are challenging and
creative, and they are put on by a great crew. This is an expedition
race in your backyard. You need to do it.

The Everglades Challenge: This is a 300 mile kayak race. Druce and I
have done it three times. The only other CARA members who have
"cowboyed up" are Thomas Bastis and Karl Royer. If you do this
race just once, your paddling game will be forever improved. This race
is kick ass and it will kick your ass. You will need to be tough and
resourceful to finish it. You owe it to yourself at least once. And
guess what? You get to bring your own boat! Contact Thomas, Karl, Druce,
or myself if you want some ideas on how to prepare for this. Go to
http://watertribe.org/ <http://watertribe.org/> and look up FL
Everglades Challenge.

Expedition Mountain Bike Racing: Right now two CARA members are pushing
themselves a long ways on their bikes. Beto Avelar is doing the 300 mile
AZ Trail and Karen Lundgren the 750 mile version. Go to
http://www.topofusion.com/azt/race.php
<http://www.topofusion.com/azt/race.php> . Last Fall Druce and I did the
250 mile Coconino Trail (non staged version,
seehttp://rockyroad5050.wordpress.com/
<http://rockyroad5050.wordpress.com/> . We had a blast. These races are
ITT (Individual Time Trails) but who cares? Do these courses solo or
take some friends and have a great challenge.

Orienteering: Last February, Druce and I did the Terraloco
<http://go-terraloco.blogspot.com/> out at Valley of Fire, NV. These
events are put on by Rex Winterbottom. They are well organized. They are
creative. If you know Team Kayak Lake Mead, we try to think out of the
box (often to our detriment). We went for all the high scoring points,
found ourselves scratching our heads a few times but we had the time of
our life out there. Do these events and your nav game will improve.
Whether you are a novice with map & compass or a Master, you owe it to
yourself to put Terraloco events on your calendar.

When I am in the middle of an adventure race, I consider myself very
lucky, just to be there. If my team and I do well, whether we take a 3rd
Place in the Mother Lode, a 1stPlace in the Everglades Challenge, or are
high scorer at a Terraloco, I consider us lucky. Regardless of skills or
strength, we were lucky. We were lucky to be there.

The Amazon 5000 is driven by a charity to give inspiration and hope to
children who don't have any. These kids are sick with cancer. While
I'm walking and paddling 5000 miles across South America this year,
I will be thinking how lucky I am. My thoughts will be on the children
who aren't, who will never be lucky.

If you could spare a few moments and a few bucks, please consider giving
to this charity. My fundraising page is here;

Thank you ever so much,

Robert Finlay
