Desert Winds 12 Hour AR - July 25/26 = FUN   Message List

To: AR Racers of Arizona, California, & Nevada

From: The race director/course designer, Robert Finlay

It so happens that most Desert Winds events have the reputation of being
super hard, super hardcore, etc. These are the adjectives I usually use
to describe one of my upcoming races. And those are the adjectives most
people use in post race reports.

Well, that is due to my over exuberance and enthusiasm for AR in general
and not to some twisted desire to make the race courses overly hard or
impossible to finish. I myself like hard, hard challenges. But, I never
know just how hard the race is going to end up being until I start
putting the course together.

Well, this time I am going to use a different set of adjectives; "super
fun and somewhat hard". Yeah, after playing around with the course
design on this one - I would have to say that the word "fun" is what
most comes to mind.

We'll start off in the morning with a kayak skills clinic, and for those
desiring it, a map & compass clinic. The race will kick off at 5 pm. It
will still be hot, but you'll be on the water and then in the water, and
then on the water some more, then an easy bike ride leads to an
interesting O-course, a return bike ride, and then finally a trek late
at night that will include swimming in the warm summer water of Lake
Mead but in the pitch black of the desert night or in the twilight of
the early morning. There are more surprises than can be indicated in the
above paragraph but one word that comes to mind in describing this
course is FUN.

This 12 hour course is designed to be finished in 12 hours or under and
not 12 to 17 hours... [:D] !

Beginners AR racers, you will have about a 6 hour course to challenge
you. You will be on the same course as those doing the 12 Hour.
However, you will be tasked to acquire far less check points. But,
because I always encourage people to go for more, this would include
myself, you will have the option of acquiring as many check points as
you desire. Thus, though you may have signed up to do a 6 hour beginner
race, your race can be as long as you want it to be.

Finally, entry into this race includes a chance to buy fast kayaks and
paddles at unreal prices. See the race page for details,
