Mary,
As someone who is preparing to take the prevot or masters exam, I
have to be cpr/first aid certified. I'll be happy to show you my red
cross cards on Wednesday.

ooo...that track suit looks good, I'd get one of those
with the SSC logo in advance. Also, I'll bring my
digital camera Wednesday and maybe get some new pics.

Dear Mary: Regarding the track suit, I like the red one, #3; would pay in

BTW, can you go by James Cisnero's office and get the spiel on the garbage collection? He said it was ok to let you do it. Maybe he'll give you a set of keys so that you don't have to track down Courtney.
Also, don't forget that I want one of those slug shirts!
See you tonight.

FOIL CLASSES STARTING IN TWO WEEKS
The beginning foil class will start at 6:30 PM on Monday, 24 January.
The advanced intermediate foil class will start at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, 26 January. The advanced intermediate foil class was a big hit - it benefited all levels of fencers.
Each class is $60 for six weeks and runs from 6:30 PM to 8 PM.
BIG TOURNAMENT IN TEN DAYS
Salle Santa Cruz is hosting C2MxE and C2MF events on Saturday, 22 January. The tournament will be held at the East Field House at UC Santa Cruz.
The check-in time for the C2MxE will be 11 AM and the C2MF will be 2 PM. We will have 6-7 strips with referees. There will be prizes for the top eight fencers in each event.
Parking is free at the university on Saturdays.

If you're under 40, you have to place in the top 25% of the competitors. Since we're hosting the event, I encourage all of you to consider competing at this tournament since Sacramento is so close. You might be able to compete at Nationals!
I hoping that we field a couple of teams for the tournament as well. Start thinking about getting some club mates together for a team.

DUEL IN THE DESERT HOTEL ROOM
I have two room reservations for the Flamingo hotel at $75 per night. The rooms are reserved for Friday and Saturday night, January 28 and 29.
Directions from San Jose: Take Highway 17 South to Santa Cruz. At the outskirts of Santa Cruz, take Highway 1 North (toward Half Moon Bay). On Business Highway 1 (Mission Street), travel approximately one mile north to Bay Street in Santa Cruz. Turn right on Bay and proceed up the hill to the main campus entrance. You will see signs for the East Field House on the right. If you are unable to find parking in the lot next to the East Field House, go back down Hagar Drive and park in the East Remote Parking Lot. Once you're at the East Field House, look for the signs leading you through the gate and down the stairs to the gym.
For you newbie fencers, this is the tournament for you! If you're thinking about competing, talk to Kevin and me so that we can start rounding up equipment - you'll need 2 body cords, 2 weapons, knickers, jacket, plastron, glove, and mask.
If you're not participating in the tournament, and you have some equipment you'd be willing to loan to the newbies, let me know.
SO I NEED VOLUNTEERS
I need people to help set up for the tournament at 9 AM on Saturday. We have to tape up the strips and set up the boxes. I could also use your help to take everything down...and I'm going to have pizza delivered at 6 PM for all helpers and directors. Let me know if you can come.
DIV II/III EPEE QUALIFIER TO SUMMER NATIONALS IS IN ONE MONTH!!
On Saturday, 12 February, we're hosting the Div II/III epee qualifiers for Summer Nationals.
Here are the events:
Veteran men's epee
Veteran women's epee
Senior Men's epee
Senior Women's epee
Team men's epee
Team women's epee
So you can see that we'll be busy! Here's an interesting fact - most of the people who normally run our tournaments will need to compete in this one so that they qualify for Nationals (which are being held in Sacramento this year). So we'll need to get some people who aren't going to participate in Summer Nationals to run this tournament. Please talk to me if you're sure that you're not going to participate in this tournament and can help run it.
The tournament will be held up at the UCSC gym again.
Here's another interesting fact - if you're over the age of 40, to ensure a place at Summer Nationals, just compete in the Veteran's events. That's it, and you're guaranteed a spot at the Nationals.
TWO ON TWO FENCING
Jeff Powell is performing magic on the boxes so that we'll be able to fence two on two some time in the next month. I'll let everyone know when it's ready, and we'll give it a try on one of the Saturday sessions.
DUEL IN THE DESERT HOTEL ROOM
I have two room reservations for the Flamingo hotel at $75 per night. The rooms are reserved for Friday and Saturday night, January 28 and 29. My sister has decided not to come, so I have an extra room. I could just cancel it, but since the room rate is so low, I figured I'd give everyone on this list an opportunity to grab it before I release it. Just let me know if you want it.
Bernie asked me to post this:
The Open Men's Foil on Saturday, January 8 desperately needs
referees. Any available folks who want to help share the kindness of
their expertise in officiating foil and getting paid at the end of
the day for that, please contact Bernie Cuzzillo at:
bernard@.... We need referees!

We're going to light the BBQ and melt down all our broken equipment!
No, just kidding. Actually, Kevin Osborn is hosting an armory clinic where we LEARN to fix our own weapons and body cords. We will be demonstrating both Foil and Epee repair. Afterwards we're going to have a BBQ to celebrate our new skills. Just come to the BBQ if you want.
Clinic Time: 3 PM, Saturday, 11 Dec
BBQ starts at 5:30 PM, Saturday, 11 December. Séance to the spirit of broken blades at Midnight.
Location: Kevin's house - 2941 Leotar Circle
Directions: From Highway 1, turn on 41st Avenue towards the ocean. Then take a right on Capitola Rd. Then take a right on 30th Avenue. Leotar Circle is actually a U shaped street with two connections to 30th avenue. 2941 is at the base of the U on the outside edge. Parking inside the condominium is restricted so please park on the street. Feel free to drop off your equipment at my garage before you part if you want.
What to bring:
* non-working equipment (Foils, Epees and Body Cords)
* side dish or dessert for the BBQ. Various sausages and drinks will be provided. Feel free to bring something else to grill or something special to drink if you would like.
Dear Mary: I will be recovering from Friday nite ER shift, so will not
attend armory clinic, but probably try to attend BBQ. AB

If you collect any broken blades that cannot be repaired for me and bring

I haven't yet figured out if I will be attending this get together, but
I may. If I make it, I look forward to meeting many of you in other
circumstances.
Regardless, here is a related comment. I am collecting old, broken blades
to use in various welded sculpture works. For those that don't know me, in
addition to fencing epee, I'm also a sculptor, working mostly in stone, but
now adding metal to my repertoire. If you have a pile of old broken blades
lying around that you want to get rid of, all you have to do is hand them to
me and I'll get them into something interesting at some point.
I'm generally at the club on Monday nights from 8-10. If you cannot get
there on Mondays and have a bunch you want to pass on, send me an email
and we'll work out a mutually convenient time. I'm at:
jeffp@...
Thanks in advance for any blades that are sent my way. I'll let the list
know if I will be there on the 11th too, just in case anyone wants t o
clean out that part of their garage or closet that soon.
Jeff Powell
PS: I can sometimes be talked into repairing equipment for only the cost
of parts. It all depends on my schedule and how much of a hurry you're
in. Ask if you want my help, but go to Kevin's armory clinic too, as
field repairs are always needed and there's never a good armorer
around (and/or available) when you really need one.

Funny... we're trying to organize a similar thing for SDC at about
the same time. We haven't picked a day or got a concensus together

This is so exciting!!! Fencers don't know how lucky they are to have such an opportunity. Kim mentioned she would like to take next class offering. Hope she is on distribution list.

ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE CLASS STARTS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 22
This is a new kind of class that we will be offering on Monday nights from 6:30 to 8 PM. It lasts for 6 weeks, and it costs $60.
This class will be lead by Eric Hansen and Kevin Osborn. The first part of the class will consist of advanced footwork drills, similar to the footwork sessions on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The second half of the class will consist of group and individual lessons with Eric and Kevin.
We highly encourage all skill levels to join us for this class - it's not just for beginning fencers. If you've taken the beginning and/or intermediate class some time in the past, this class is for you.
BEGINNING FENCING CLASS TO START IN JANUARY
The next beginning fencing class will start in January. If you know of anyone who is interested in this class, please forward his/her email to me, and I'll notify them when the date is set for the class.
SALLE SANTA CRUZ LOCATION
There has been some discussion of moving the fencing club to another location. We need lots of space, a good floor, and cheap rent. If you have any ideas, please let me know. Lots of parking and bathrooms is nice too :-)
EMAILS
Just a reminder that we have a discussion group set up on Yahoo. Let me know if you receive two emails, because I've set up a separate email list of folks who didn't join the group.
If you want to join the group, you can either log on to http://groups.yahoo.com and find santacruzfencing, or you can send an email to the following address to subscribe.
Remember, this is a discussion group - it's ok to send emails to it. If you have a question about technique, etc., this is a good forum to ask. The people who didn't want to get emails from the group didn't join it, so you won't be "bugging" anyone.
VACATION SCHEDULE (ALSO KNOWN AS "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE FENCING OVER THE HOLIDAYS")
I know, it seems too early to be discussing the holidays, but they're here. Believe it or not, we fence throughout the holidays (just ask our spouses). The ONLY day there will be NO fencing is Saturday, December 25 (hey, we have some standards). So yes, we'll be fencing the day before Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving weekend, and the week of Christmas.
The question is whether we want to fence on Saturday, January 1. What do you think? Are you planning to come?
RECENT RESULTS
Vet Mixed Epee (7 Nov) - Jeff Powell took 2nd and Jere Bothelio took 5th. Congrats to Jeff on jumping from an E rating to a B rating in one tournament!!. Bummer that neither Jeff nor Jere fence for SSC, but they fence with us on Monday nights, so we'll bask in their reflected glory.
Vet Women's Epee (31 Oct) - 8th place Mary Keane. This was the first Veteran Women's Epee tournament, and it is affectionately known as the Old Ladies Fest. It was a lot of fun, although it was odd fencing around cats (there were two cats who wandered through the fencing strips). It was also unusual for another feature - we fenced off for every place (which means you keep fencing direct elimination bouts even if you lose them).
Vet Mixed Foil (23 Oct) - Alan Buchwald took 5th, Jonathan Sweet took 6th, John Hadley took 7th, and Dennis Schlief took 8th. A great showing by the Salle Santa Cruz men. Dennis and Al are really racking up the Bay Cup points - Al is 5th and Dennis is 7th in the point standings due to their consistent placings at the vet tournaments.
C2 Men's Foil (7 Nov) - 25th Dennis Schlief (this was in a tournament of 41 fencers).
C2 Mixed Epee (7 Nov) - Jeff Powell 5th, Ken Campbell 15th. This was the same day that Jeff earned his B in the Vet tournament - he was really smoking!
Open Men's Epee (24 Oct) - 1st place Eric Hansen, 6th place Dennis Le. There were 44 fencers in this tournament, with 7 A level fencers. It was a lot of fun to watch.
Open Women's Epee (24 Oct) - 5th place Heath Cabot, 15th place Mary Keane.
UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS
Sunday, 5 Dec Open Men's Foil and Open Women's Foil
Sunday 12 Dec C2 Women's Foil - four women (including me) from our club are going to this event (the first tournament for most of them). Please let me know if you want to join us - I have plenty of room in the van.
Sunday 2 Jan Open Men's Epee and Open Women's Epee - I'm planning on going to this one (it's in Davis), and I'm happy to take people with me.
Duel in the Desert - 28-30 Jan. If you're planning to fence at this tournament, you need to get your registration and hotel soon. The Flamingo Hotel rooms are $79 per night until DECEMBER 2 - after that, it looks like they'll be around $150 per night. If you register for the tournament by December 1, the registration fee is $30 and the event fee is $50. If you register AFTER December 1, the registration fee is $60 and the event fee is $100 (getting kind of pricey to do two events). If you register at the door, it's $90 to register and $150 per event.
I've already reserved a room and have registered for the tournament (Vet and Women's Epee). I've never been to this tournament before, but Kevin, Mark, and Eric have, and they speak very highly of it. The winners get a $1000 in chips.

Dear Eric: I would want to try to work out at the club in the morning and
then leave to register to fence in the individual foil event by 12:30pm; I
am also interested in the team foil event later that afternoon.
Sincerely, Alan
