Monthly Salle Santa Cruz Mailing List Email
This is a brief reminder of some relevant SSC things.
First, on the use of the list:
------------------------------------------------------------------
1) To send email to the entire SSC list use the following address:
santacruzfencing@yahoogroups.com
2) If you reply to an email from the list, by default, the reply
will only go back to the entire list. Remember that before sending
off an insult, challenge, marriage proposal, or whatever.
3) If you try to send email and it fails, the most likely reason is
that you're sending from a different email address than the one
that you signed up with the list. For example, if you signed up
as "sabreur@..." and try to send email from
"bob@..." your email will not be sent. Only MEMBERS
may send email to the list, and membership is determined by the FROM
email address.
4) Related to #3: if you change your email address, you need to subscribe
the new address to the list, and (preferably) un-subscribe the old one.
If you need help with either of these things, contact Mary Keane at:
mary.keane@...
5) If you have other questions about the use of the list, or issues with
it in some way, send them directly to Mary: mary.keane@...
She will do her best to assist you, or farm it out to someone else.
(Delegation is her specialty.)
6) Please use the list only for SSC related items. The list is probably
bigger than you know. Humor, politics, and other items are all good
things, but please don't use this list to start discussions about them.
You may inadvertently offend or bother someone you've never met.
What is appropriate includes: any SSC business (meetings, parties,
competitions, volunteer opportunities, etc.), other fencing related
items (events, suppliers, articles, links, etc.), and probably other
things not listed here.
Use your best judgment on this. Remember: if you send it here, A bunch
of email addresses you don't know get it. Do you really want them all
to read it? Is it related to the club or fencing in some way?
7) If you need to contact just one person, it is generally best to look
email them individually, rather than email the entire club looking for
them. If you need contact help, email Mary, who can dig up the data
for you if it is available.
8) This goes without saying, but please be polite. A lot of people read
these emails, and they are indexed for posterity on the Yahoo servers
as well, though only list members can read them there. It is always
possible to express differing opinions kindly and respectfully. I
trust we all know that, and that we will all do that.
Next, a simple reminder about putting things away:
------------------------------------------------------------------
When the club closes up after a session, and the gear needs to get
put away, please put it back into the totes - one strip's worth
per tote - and stack them neatly in the storage closet. Other gear
that doesn't go into the totes (weapons, jackets, masks, etc.) all
have designated places as well - hangars, bags, and the like.
PLEASE put all the gear away neatly so that the next session it is
easy to find and get setup again.
Ordering the really cool Salle Santa Cruz warmups
------------------------------------------------------------------
Warmup ordering instructions
Ordering Clothing with the Embroidered Club Logo
1. Contact Bam Designs (Mary Fletcher) at bamfletch@... or the phone number
listed above
The Bam Designs catalog is stored in the club closet - there are lots of
clothing options in the catalog. If you purchase the clothing from Bam Designs,
the embroidery charge is often free. You'll want to discuss the price of the
item and the embroidery options with Mary.
If you're going to purchase the Santos warmup set or have some other clothing
embroidered, you need to discuss embroidery options, time lines, price, etc.
with Mary. The embroidery charge will be around $10-15, depending on the item.
2. Have the clothing sent to Bam Designs.
You can purchase the Santos warmup from New Horizons and have it shipped to Bam
Designs or you can ship your own clothing to Bam Designs.
New Horizons http://www.newhorizonssoccer.com/soccer-warmups-prod.itml/icOid/381
or http://www.newhorizonssoccer.com/ and search for Santos Soccer Training Suit.

When the warmups are finished, they'll be mailed back to you.
Finally, on the use and fixing of club equipment:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Jeff Powell is our club armorer. He will do his best to fix things when
they break. You can assist him in this effort by following a few simple
steps when something breaks:
1) Set it aside. Do NOT just put it back in the totes with
the working gear. Broken gear can be put into the storage
closet, (IN PLAIN SIGHT, PLEASE!) just not in the totes. See
the rest of these notes, however. If you determine something
is broken and Jeff Powell is there, please hand it to him personally.
2) Mark it. Use some tape and wrap it so it isn't usable without
breaking the tape. (Correspondingly, if you find something that
is taped up, do NOT use it. Leave it for Jeff to fix.)
3) Write a quick note about the problem and tape it to the item.
If you replace a floor cable because it's not working, for
example, just tape it up, add a note that says "flaky - sometimes
won't let a foil touch register" and include the date.
4) Tell Jeff about it. You can do this by sending him email at:
jeffp@...
or you can tell any of the regulars that might there when
you find the problem: Eric, Mary, Bob, Mark, etc.. Mary is a
particularly good candidate for such a message, as she and Jeff
exchange email semi-regularly.
Thank you for reading this. If you have suggestions for additional content
in this monthly automated reminder email, please send them to Mary Keane.

Hi there,
I'm all for the Parks & Rec approach. I took the beginning fencing
class with Kevin three times (3rd time's a charm...) in four years
and every time that I signed up was due to the fact that I saw it in
the Parks & Rec catalog. Even if people don't sign up for a
particular round of classes, it gets the word out that there are
regular fencing classes in town and plants a seed in some people's
minds that it might be something that they'd like to try.
The pubic access channel should air the fencing demo sometime soon,
right? Is it a promo for our club? Does it mention the club website?
How often will it air?
Also, if we're trying to generate interest in a teen class over the
summer, then doing an actual demo at some Jr. High/High Schools, or
maybe at the teen center might help. There's only about two weeks of
school left, so we'd have to move fast.

I can't help but chime in here...
My experience is that teaching people that just drop
in is a no-win situation. They pay as they go and
they usually quit after a few lessons. People need
some level of commitment to learn fencing and the best
way to do that is to have them pay a fee and attend
the class.
I think the best way to run the class is to have 3-4
beginning classes a year and post the rough dates on
the website. Keep a running list of those interested
and then call/email them when you get close to the
date. Summer is a good time for a teen class.
January for those wanting to get back in shape. Then
pick a few other dates that work. In-between
beginnning classes hold an intermediate class. This
is where the drop-in small group lessons can really
work.
Publicity is the key. We need to get the word out for
the classes. Posters at Cabrillo and UCSC and around
town really work. Adds in the paper help quite a bit
too. Pictures really help too if you can afford it.
The Parks and Rec thing works pretty well. After a
while I started feeling like I had mined that market
pretty well though. I used to get a lot of calls from
people wanting me to break the min age of 13yr
restriction that I had.
BTW Mary, I think you could teach the whole beginning
class just fine if you felt so inclined.
I hope this helps,
-Kevin

Option three is an interesting idea since it would theoretically allow for
several different people to enter at different times. It would be up to the
individual coach to determine their skill level and what to teach them. We
would need to figure out a fee structure and whether or not to give a small
portion to the coach as an incentive. I can handle a few people but my arm
is not strong enough for more than a couple. Also, I fixed those two power
supplies. One had a wire come loose because the retaining screw was missing
and the other had a bad power supply.

Hi everyone,
Just a little more detail to help in our discussion of the beginning class
structure.
If we teach the beginning class through Parks and Rec, they will allow us to
charge whatever fee we want. However, they will take $17 per student, plus %20
of the entry fee. So we need to factor that into our decision.
Mary
Hi folks,
I'd like to start a discussion about the beginning fencing classes. We've had a
couple of proposals that I'd like your comments on, as well as any other
proposals.
1. Teach the class under the auspices of the Parks and Recreation department.
Kevin Osborn did this in the past. The benefits are that Parks and Rec does all
the advertising; the downside is that they take a lot of the fees as well. The
entry form for the Winter/Spring session is due Oct 6 (we missed the deadline
for the Fall session).
2. Teach a 12 or 15-week course, with each instructor only being responsible for
3-4 classes. For example, I can teach the first couple of classes which involve
footwork and basic fencing, then Al takes over the class for more advanced work,
then Bob, etc. This would lessen the burden on each person teaching the class,
but it would prepare the beginning fencers better for club bouting, plus expose
the students to more advanced teaching early on.
3. Have 2-3 people responsible for teaching beginning fencers on an ad hoc
basis. Mark gets 2-3 requests a month from the website for beginning fencing
instruction, but since we don't teach the beginning fencing class all the time,
we lose those folks. The thought here is that we encourage folks to come for the
basic footwork, and then one of us is responsible for teaching a 15-20 minute
lesson to whomever is there. We could have one person responsible for Mondays,
another for Wednesdays, etc. I would be happy to sign up for one of the days, as
long as the other days are covered.
If you have any other ideas, please toss them into the mix. And let's hear your
comments on the other proposals. Kevin, we'd especially like to hear from you
since you taught the beginning classes for so long.

Just checking. I know you people are all really hard core about
this sport, but I thought I'd better check to be sure that we're
actually meeting tonight.
Thanks!

I did mean you, Andrew, and how long it takes to get UCSC's gear
repaired is up to some combination of you and me. You may well
get to it sooner, though, so don't wait for me if you have the
time. If you need help, though, or if you run out of time, give
it to Mary with a note explaining whatever you know about the
problems it has and I'll fix it in June or July.

Hey Mary (and everyone else),
For all intents and purposes, a broken floor cable is exactly like
a broken body cord. The same technics for fixing the one will fix
the other. So, Mary, if you want you can hand me that floor cable
later, or - since I know you've fixed your own body cords, right? -
you can fix the floor cable exactly the same way.
It's probably a loose screw or two inside one or both connectors.
Failing that, check for a broken wire inside the connectors. After
that, you have to look for a broken wire where they enter the plastic
shell of the connectors. And finally, it could be corrosion under the
spring clips on the pins.
Those are the big 4 things that go wrong with both body and floor
cables. Body cables can also build up too much resistance from corrosion
of the wire right through the insulation. If that happens, though, you
have to throw them away and get a new one unless it is right at an end.
Floor cables shouldn't have that issue because they aren't stored with
sweaty fencing gear all the time.
Anyway, Mary, you may hand me that floor cable the next time you see
me if you want. I can probably fix that in the club itself.

Thanks Sarah.
Is one of the guys up there still doing armoury work or not?
If not, I may be able to take a look at these things in late
June or July, assuming anyone is around to get them to me.

Jeff,
One of the floor cords was having trouble on Monday night - it acted like a
broken body cord. I put it in my fencing bag, and I put a piece of green
tape on it.

Mary,
You told me about the reels. One is the land mine I have in
my possession.
The other was a flat reel - probably a Favero - and we were using
them SSC reels that night at the club without issues. You thought
perhaps the problem was with a UCSC reel in that case, but it was
unclear.
Does anyone know the story of the reels that were busted at the BW Open?
Any details would help me to track them down and fix them. Thanks!
And thanks to you, Mary, for planning on coming to the show. I only hope
things sell for me this year like they did last year. I have a few new
pieces that are coming together even now.

Hey folks,
Just a heads up that the art show and other things are crushing
me right now. I may well skip fencing tonight, and possibly
next week too.
Once I get past the show on June 10 & 11 I should be fine,
but only time will tell if I can fence again before then.

I'm still traveling on business so I won't be able to make it this weekend. I agree with Jeff and also give my voting rights to Mary. I would love to see her run again. She is definitely a class act
I should be back in the good old USA late next week and will probably show up next Saturday.
Alas I cannot attend this meeting. I forgot that it collides with a standing FF training session. Sorry.
I officially give whatever voting proxy I have to Mary, who may vote in my stead however she sees fit.
I will be more than happy to continue doing armory work, but I cannot take on any role with the club beyond that due to my other commitments. Sorry!
Now, despite what she says, I'd love to see her continue in her role as president. She has the personality and the charm to pull it off. I think, therefore, that we need to amend the constitution to allow Mary to run again. Hey, if they can consider an amendment to let Arnold run...
Have fun on Saturday, and I do hope to make one of these gatherings some day!

This should make things more fun -- for me at least.
Ladies -
We have just been notified of a schedule change. GGFC will be hosting
the final Bay Cups in Open Women's Epee and Junior Women's Epee on June
4.
Here's the schedule:
9:00 Junior Women's Epee
12:00 Open Women's Epee.
Fencers born after January 1, 1986, should plan on fencing both: it
will be great experience!
Entries are taken at the door: no advance registration is required
To summarize for anyone who is new or unclear, here are the
requirements:
1) USFA membership. If you are not already a member, you can join at
the door, and your membership will run through July 31, 2007.
2) $25 entry fee for each event
3) Two working weapons and body cords. GGFC equipment is available
for rental if necessary.
Please e-mail ggfcbiz@... if you have any questions.
For you, my dear, we're going to have the carnivore special.

I think we should expect about 10 people.
OK folks - change of plans - you're still going to eat, but you don't
have to bring food unless you have some killer dessert you're dying to
share with all of us. :-)
Charli - as always, something vegetarian and definitely ham and

Mary, that sounds like a better idea. I'll order the pizzas I guess and
bring them up and I'll bring those scrapers too. I may however come up
early with the pizzas, it's going to be crowded, I may be dropped off
with my bike. Might not be able to get back without a long wait on Beach
street.
How many pizzas/drinks and I have paper plates, cups, napkins and such.

I think we should expect about 10 people.
OK folks - change of plans - you're still going to eat, but you don't
have to bring food unless you have some killer dessert you're dying to
share with all of us. :-)
Charli - as always, something vegetarian and definitely ham and
pineapple.

Charli

God, that was such a long time ago, I'll have to see
if they are still there, I'll bring them to the church
tomorrow. I am well, hope you are well.
