(I am cc-ing the list in the vain impression that everyone else has the same question about my shoulder)

Yeah, the left handed fencing is getting old (emphasizing the word "old"). OK, here is the scoop.

The MRI showed two minor tear problems along with some other things. The first is irritation and swelling on the rotator cuff which is probably a minor tear. The second is some inflamation where the biceps tendon attaches, which could be another minor tear. Neither one is a complete separation. More worriesome is the bone spur that is protruding down from my colarbone impinging on where these tendons pass through the joint. I suspect that this is what makes it so hard for me to get over the hump on my recovery. The MRI also showed another issue which is common with repetitive motion injuries of the shoulder. I have some arthirtis buildup on the end of my colarbone (in addition to the spur) which is also getting in my way.

Treatment is a shot (which I got yesterday) and 4 more weeks of PT. I feel better after the cortisone. If that doesn't work then it's time for roto-rooter. Recovery from that would be 6-12 weeks depending on the extent of damage they find inside the joint, and that is just to get back to 80%. I think we are looking at next year before I can give you any serious challenge on the strip. I will also be stopping the lefthanded bouting as I cannot keep from stressing the right shoulder whenever I actually fence. Left handed lessons are OK.
